Today I've come to Matsusaka in Mie Prefecture, famous for beef. It's a big station. The station is big, but trains don't come very often
This is the standard story when talking about trains in Mie Prefecture, there are two railways, JR and Kin-
tetsu, and JR is
like this kind of train. In contrast
Kintetsu has lots of trains like this coming, sometimes even double-decker eight-car formations
So which one would you want to ride? Well, this one, Kintetsu is better, isn't it
So Kintetsu is super convenient and has lots of passengers, but JR is like nothing. That's the standard pattern in Mie Prefecture
Especially the Meisho Line we're riding this time, from here in Matsusaka to Nabari
It was supposed to be the Meisho Line going to that place
But partway, the Kintetsu Line built a track going straight via Ise-Nakagawa
So they thought there was no point building further, and it ends partway at Ise-Okitsu and still hasn't been completed. In fact, it's one of the most deficit-ridden local lines in the country
It's a railway that had everything taken by Kintetsu, and that's what I want to ride now
I finally bought a ticket. I bought it with a credit card
From Matsusaka via the Meisho Line to this place called Ichishi, a 240-yen section. Why am I buying this section
For this section, the JR local line, the Meisho Line, is apparently faster than Kintetsu
So let's try riding it now
So first of all
at the station
Interestingly, in Mie Prefecture, JR and Kin-
tetsu's
stations are combined into one
Over there is the Kintetsu ticket office, where many people go to buy. Well, there are quite a few at the JR ticket office too
Once you buy a ticket for whichever one you like
everyone puts it into these ticket gates
And then heads toward the train they're riding. Most people apparently use tracks 6, 7, and 8 for Kintetsu
So it's written on the stairs too
Kintetsu is this way. And
You cannot ride JR lines with the card. That's right
You can just tap it at the gate, but IC cards only work for Kintetsu. For JR you need a paper ticket
I found a Kintetsu timetable here. At the busiest times, there are 7 local trains per hour
and 5 limited expresses
That's too many
There was also a JR timetable. Oh, JR is doing pretty well too. At the busiest time, there seem to be four trains in the 11 o'clock hour
All the passengers seem to go down to the JR platform and head toward Kintetsu
There it is, I found the Meisho Line timetable too. Here it is. How neatly and clearly it's organized
Even so, it does give the impression they're working quite hard to maintain it
The next one is at 17:18. In ten minutes. This will be the school-commute train for students after school
I wonder if anyone is riding it
Here is the Meisho Line
local train. Well, of course there's only local trains
Bound for Ise-Okitsu. Today is a weekday
No one's on board. Well, I think there are a few people
It seems there are almost no passengers. These local trains feel like hardly anyone rides them, but often there are a few commuting students
Well, it's also a matter of personal privacy, so I won't stare too much with the camera
It seems hardly anyone is on board
By the way, this vehicle is the KiHa 11, which is quite rare to ride
It's a vehicle operated on these super local lines to cut costs, and its performance is good, but since there are few passengers, just one car
Even though it's just one car, inside that one car, the vehicle is particularly short
But it looks pretty cool, doesn't it. I think the design is well made
これは
This is
This is what's called staff block working
You don't see it much nowadays. The stationmaster, the person in charge of train operations, comes and hands the driver that thing with a ring. He just handed it over now
This confirms that it's safe to proceed ahead
Normally, since there are many trains, they automatically use red signals and such to control trains, but
This Meisho Line has extremely few trains, so safety can be ensured without problem manually, and so,
It's a method where they hand the driver something called a staff for token block working, and unless he has it, he must not proceed. That's how they control the trains
Well then, let's get on board soon
As the time approaches, quite a few passengers are getting on
About seven or eight people, I guess
The seats are comfortable and pleasant. Let's wait a bit until departure
So, from now on, I'm thinking of going to this place called Saihonnji Kaiin
Well, actually I'm not going to receive treatment there though
To get there
Using this Meisho Line, you can get there in 26 minutes. Kintetsu runs perfectly parallel to it,
You can also go by that Kintetsu, but with Kintetsu, due to operational reasons
You have to transfer at Ise-Nakagawa along the way. And because there's waiting time there,
If you're going to this Saihonnji Kaiin,
It seems faster to take this Meisho Line local train to Ise-Okutsu Station
And please look at this too
Believe it or not, if you go by Kintetsu,
The fare costs 360 yen, but
With this Meisho Line, it only costs 240 yen, so
The Meisho Line is cheaper. Somehow this one is faster and cheaper than Kintetsu and requires no transfer
So everyone, if you're going to the area around Saihonnji Kaiin, please use the Meisho Line
Just now, a Kintetsu luxury express train, 1A
That blue train just departed. Rather than going to Saihonnji Kaiin on that,
Going
To Saihonnji Kaiin on this,
Is faster
Yes, now we've boarded nicely
It's time, we're departing
It might be nice to watch from the very front. The next train is 2 hours later
The station staff
Was watching us
Only for this train,
It seems to be the rule that the staff in charge at Matsusaka Station always see off the departure. Here
We've departed Matsusaka. This is famous as a commercial town, and there's a parking lot in the back,
That parking lot area probably used to have lots of freight trains coming in. It's a very
Large station. On the left, this is the Kintetsu line,
And the track we're running on now, this is the Kisei Main Line
We should be running on a local line now, but instead we're running on a main line for a while, I think this kind of operation is rare. Here it comes
A Kintetsu limited express, coming
Did it come around from the Nabari side? It was running at tremendous speed. The Ise-Shima Liner. Because of that, this Meisho Line lost its reason to be built and ended up as a dead end halfway
Kintetsu has better track alignment, so it can go overwhelmingly faster. It's electrified too
Here our Meisho Line train has slowed down
Probably here
It should branch off from the main line. To the right
The Kisei Main Line heading toward Nagoya
We are
Of the dead-end local line
The Meisho bound for Ise-Okitsu
We've entered the line
As the Meisho Line, it was supposed to go to Nabari, but it couldn't reach Nabari
It couldn't. Actually it was originally planned to go to Sakurai in Nara. That acceleration is good
This vehicle doesn't seem to compromise much on acceleration performance, running at 60 kilometers per hour
It's running at
We've diverged from the main line beside us, but still we're running at quite a good speed
I wonder if it would be even faster on the main line
That track over there looks somehow like better rails
Well, even if we ran at 100 km/h here it wouldn't change competitiveness much, so spending money would just increase the burden
So it becomes that
This speed is enough. It's plenty fast
This Meisho Line was built even earlier than the Kintetsu line and has few stations. Near here on Kintetsu
There seems to be a station called Matsugasaki, with a Book Off and such, but we
passed it
There are Kaikatsu Club and Aoki and various things over there
Since we go without stopping at the towns along the way, thanks to that we're much faster. On Kintetsu, an express would skip intermediate stations, but a local train stops quite frequently
Compared to a Kintetsu local train, the travel time is much
There are also fewer stops. Next we came to Kaminosho
There don't seem to be many buildings around this station
On the other hand
Kintetsu
Well, Kintetsu doesn't have many either
Yes, the train has arrived at the first stop, Kaminosho. It's a station that feels like a bus stop. Actually I think this is similar to a bus stop
Newly built in the year
It looks like a station
Probably 1960
Until then this was a steam locomotive train, I think
And, well, that's a bit
Too slow, and well, there were various problems, so
That's probably around when it became this diesel train. Probably around that time train performance improved, so they built a station there, I think
What is that on the iron bridge, a used-up iron bridge
Do you know if it's some spare part. It's placed there. Yes, arrived at the next station, Gongemmae Station. This station seems old
It seems to have been here since years ago
We've come to a somewhat unusual village. By the way, there are many railways around here
This Gongemmae and
And Ise-Nakagawa, Kintetsu, plus JR, a total of
There seem to be three
This station is
It's hidden now, but over there
There was an agricultural warehouse
It seems this station also had quite an important role in the past. Ah, there's a factory beside it too
Probably freight trains used to run quite a lot in the past
Again like once a day or something like that, I think
I think it played a role in transporting rice harvested in this town to other places
Nice acceleration, we've already left the station behind. And it's unusual that there are no signals, there are no red lights or green lights at all
Because it was staff block just now
And next, the train is passing near Kintetsu Ise-Nakagawa Station
Near here is Kintetsu's super major station, Ise-Nakagawa Station, and from there you can go to Osaka, Nagoya, Nara, and the prefectural capital Tsu, so
It's super convenient, so the residential area seems to have grown huge, but
That's on the Kintetsu side, and for this JR line here
It seems completely unrelated, various nurseries and such have been built, and you can feel the development, but we
Are completely skipping through the developing town of Ise-Nakagawa
This is interesting. Even though there's a big town, the local line passes right by without stopping — I think you can only experience that here
If you look at the map like this, there are quite a lot of houses, and Mega Don Quijote and
Well, there are various large facilities too, but
The train completely bypassed this town
That was a fresh experience
Well, even if there was a local line station there with a train once every two hours, no one would use it, so
There's probably no need to add a station later
Yes, next is Ise-Hata Station, it seems. We've departed Ise-Hata Station. This station also looks like it's been around for a long time
Ah, but looking at the降る... I mean
That doesn't look like that old a station
Generally
For new stations, where the track is
Stations built later like a bus stop attached to the side of a single track
Are generally new
Since when has Nishi-Hatsu Station existed?
No, in that case... it's been there since 1930. So
It seems it's been there since this line was built
I wonder if the shape of the station changed from the old days
It seems there were freight trains until 1963. Arrival, or
When getting off, exit from the front door and hand this ticket to the driver. Yes, so we've arrived at our destination, Isshi Station. 240 yen, that was quite fun
Eight
八はち
One, nice. It ran well with good performance. This station looks like it was added later on a sharp curve
Quite a special installation
It seems to have a history
Isn't this a station with atmosphere
The cloudy sky is nice again
Continuing further toward Ise-Okitsu deep in the mountains
We'll keep going. I'm getting off here
Surprisingly, there was someone using this Isshi Station
I don't think anyone got off at the stations so far, but here there was. So it's possible they're using this because it's probably cheaper than Kintetsu
For those users, the frequency may be low, but
It may be cheaper, closer to home, or easier with no transfers than Kintetsu
It seems there are people who choose the local line over Kintetsu for some reason. You can hear the sound of a Kintetsu local train from over there
Yeah, some sound is coming. In other words
That is, earlier, I mentioned that coming by this local line might be faster than departing on that blue express and transferring, but
It seems, Kintetsu...
With that, it's a bit difficult to say that this local line can compete with Kintetsu, but, however
A local line that can get you to your destination faster than Kintetsu
I thought it was a refreshing experience
Beyond this, toward Ise-Okitsu too
This ahead toward Ise-Okitsu
It has a history of being an important transportation hub and such, so it looks interesting to visit, and I'd like to go again. If I go today it will already get dark, so I'll stop here for now
By the way, this Ichishi Station was apparently built around before or after the war, but originally it was on a sharp curve, so you normally wouldn't build a station in a place like this
But I think there were probably many local residents, so it was built for their convenience, but when the station was first built here it was like an unofficial station
Tickets to here apparently weren't really sold much
At nearby Matsusaka or Iseshi or places like that, you could apparently buy a ticket to here, to Ichishi
But apparently you couldn't ride from Tokyo to Ichishi, or from Osaka to Ichishi
There are quite a few residents. There seem to be many dog owners, and dogs are walking all over the place. Here
People also park bicycles. I wonder if this bicycle is used regularly
No, it looks like a bicycle that isn't used much
Many of them look rusty somehow
Well, let's take a look at this Ichishi station building with the tin roof
It seems people can go inside, so I wonder if there was a time when someone was stationed here
There's something on the side. What is this
A toilet? Is there a toilet here
It feels a bit scary, though
I think it's because few people come here
I wonder if water comes out. Ah
It comes out. Brown water came out. There was rust, but water is still running, it seems
The toilet seems to be no longer usable. It's locked from the outside like this
Since I paid the 240 yen fare
You can wash your hands. Is this okay? Is it clean? But I think it's probably just rusty
It's a station where you can wash your hands but can't use the toilet. That's unusual, isn't it
Oh, something a bit
It's a violent-looking scene. Well, it's an umbrella, I guess
They did sell tickets here in the old days, there was a person here
これ
This
There's a tray for putting fares in and out, so
For some reason the station premises seem to have become a dog-walking course, and someone with a dog just went into the station. We passed each other. It was a mysterious sight
It's interesting, a local line is exactly this, this is truly local
And here there's a mailbox and
There's also a garbage collection point
This station seems to have been used as the center of the town. Shrines or JNR stations tend to become town centers
This is dangerous, don't play here
I'd like to look around with the passengers, but there are quite a few local people, so I don't want to talk too much. Because it's noisy
It's called the Ichishi-Jutaku level crossing, and indeed there are many houses
It seems like a station with a fair amount of use, and they've installed SOS emergency buttons and such, so I get the impression JR Central spends money on safety without compromise
There was once talk of abolishing this Meisho Line, but in 2016 after various agreements
It was decided to continue operating
And we've arrived at Ichishi. The station is right there
It was right in front of us
Today is Wednesday, so it seems to be a consultation day and currently during consultation hours
ですが
But
I wonder if it's open? It doesn't look very bright
There are no cars either, well, well, it's fine this time. Excuse me. Using this as an opportunity, I need to get a regular dental checkup at my family dentist again
There's a Kintetsu station very close to here, which is an interesting spot, so let's go to the Kintetsu station too
Something is coming. Urban Liner, bound for Nagoya, maybe
The Next has come
Yes, we've arrived at the Kintetsu line station. Here the road is a bit narrow, cars seem to whiz by. What is that over there
There's an unusually large number of bicycles
But these look like bicycles that are normally used. There's a passage so you can access each bicycle
うん
Yeah,
so this is like a self-service bike parking area, I guess
and this over here is the station on the Kintetsu Line side. The Kintetsu station has a different name, Kawai-Taka
oka, it seems
in front of the station there's an old-fashioned shopping area. There's a dry cleaner, a bike shop
you know, these kinds of places have them in old towns
and then this is a catering shop, and also a cafe space and
this Kintetsu Kawai-Takaoka Station also looks very old, it's a wooden station building that seems to have been built in 1930 and used ever since. The exterior walls have been renewed
and the JR Ichishi Station from earlier
compared with this Kintetsu Kawai-Takaoka Station, Kintetsu seems older. Well, this Kintetsu Line has a very long history
which originally comes from laying tracks from Osaka for visiting Ise Grand Shrine
apparently it's been operating since 1930
usually, you know, JR
is there first and then a private railway company builds later, that's the common pattern, but
here Kintetsu came first, so really
the Meisho Line was built a bit later, like what do we do now that Kintetsu is already here, it was a pretty complicated situation, a difficult line, you know
currently Ichishi and Kawai-Takaoka are
close to each other, but
it seems this Ichishi Station was originally around here near the Oyatsu Company headquarters, but for some reason after the war
it was relocated to this area, and the reason for that is unclear too
there's quite a lot around here. Well then, shall we go to Kawai-Takaoka Station
the station seems to be unmanned. You don't often see an unmanned station on a branch line, so it's a rare experience
and this is
isn't this a bench from 1930 or so, over 90 years ago
maybe not
it's low after all. I feel like it's made to fit the body size of Japanese people back then
there's no one at the ticket gate
you can pay with that. Well then, let me use the restroom
there's no ticket vending machine, so if you board from here, take a numbered ticket and
settle the fare on board, or use an IC card like Suica, or use Kintetsu's latest
touch payment
あれ
huh
エラー
it's an error because I'm doing it on the exit side. Nice sound. There's a toilet too. The toilet looks new
something seems to be coming. It's a limited express. Oh, it's the Hinotori. Here
it comes running. Oh, cool
it's close
it might be interesting
if you go left from here it's Osaka. Osaka is far ahead, you finally get there after crossing two mountains
if you go right, it's straight to Ise Grand Shrine and such
you can go to Tsu, Ise-Nakagawa, Matsusaka
it's saying something again. It seems to be coming soon. To go to Osaka from here, transfer at Sakakibara-Onsenguchi ahead,
it's about an hour and twenty-four minutes apparently
another limited express came
bound for Uehommachi? It would be fast if I took this, but yes, I'm a Kintetsu user so
I can only watch it pass. Limited expresses don't stop at this station
Kintetsu means, you know, that you haven't paid, right
shall we go to the restroom. Seems we have some time to wait for the train
this is, oh, but it's a pretty clean restroom
This is, oh, but it's a pretty clean restroom
This is, oh, but it's a pretty clean restroom
This station is quite elaborately done. I don't know who does this. Maybe local volunteers? The splendid trimming is
The azalea flowers are at their best. There are
quite a few people using it. Wearing suits and such
This station has an agricultural cooperative in front of the station
Well, from here I'll go to Onsen-guchi and transfer
and head out to Osaka. But if I'm going to do this, I might as well have just taken the Kintetsu limited express from the start, I haven't forgotten that. Anyway, thank you very much
