Hello everyone. Welcome to the Japanese podcast. Hello.
Today, let's think together about casual Japanese used when talking with friends. Yes, that sounds like a very interesting theme. Actually,
in Japanese conversation, just conveying information is not enough. That's right.
Even if the words are correct, there is sometimes an invisible wall that you might hit. Listeners, have you ever
thought that while talking with Japanese friends? The Japanese learned in textbooks and actual conversation are a bit different, right? Yeah.
Today, let's slowly look at tips to eliminate that invisible wall. The true purpose of casual Japanese
is not just to exchange information. That's right. Sharing the same feelings is important, isn't it? Yes.
Today, let's explore those emotional movements through a story. Today's theme is a story about a bouldering competition. Bouldering,
a sport where you climb walls, right? Yes.
The protagonists participate in that competition, but their goal is a bit unusual. Unusual?
Yes. If they win the competition, they get a prize of 50,000 yen. 50,000 yen? That's happy news. But,
they are planning to buy a lot of Japanese sweets with that 50,000 yen. Japanese sweets?
Traditional Japanese snacks, right? Yeah.
Things like Western-style sweets, mochi, or dango. I see. 50,000 yen worth of Japanese sweets is an amazing amount. It really is.
Listeners, you might be a little surprised too. Just imagining it makes the sweet smell seem to soak in. If it were me, I would buy new Japanese textbooks with 50,000 yen. That's serious. Yes.
Using it all on sweets is like buying a mountain of sugar with 50,000 yen, isn't it? It might certainly look that way. Doesn't it look a bit unplanned or childish?
At first glance, yes. Buying textbooks seems like a more adult-like choice. Doesn't it?
でも
But,
human motivation,
in other words, think about how the energy to do your best is born. Energy to do your best?
Yes. Actually, their plan is very logical. Logical?
What do you mean?
For example, buying textbooks is
preparation for the future, right? Yes.
It's preparation to study more from now on.
That is a wonderful thing, but
at the same time, it also becomes pressure that you have to do difficult studying from now on. Ah, I see, it becomes a bit of a heavy goal. Yeah.
Humans have a hard time putting in 100% effort with only abstract goals in the distant future.
That might be true. I also want to run away the day before a test. I understand.
On the other hand,
a pure joy that you can get right away. It's certainly a pleasure right in front of your eyes.
Just imagining the heavy sweetness of Japanese sweets or chewy dango releases a happiness substance called dopamine in the brain. I see. Dopamine is released, right? Yes.
You can replace the pressure and tension of the competition with this fun imagination.
It's better than feeling anxious about what to do if you fail the competition, right? Yes.
Thinking that you can eat delicious Japanese sweets in a little while
makes it easier to relax and perform well. So Japanese sweets weren't just snacks, but tools to keep your heart positive. That's exactly right.
Listeners, please try preparing a concrete reward before a difficult exam. Like eating something delicious after the exam is over, right? Yes.
It should give you surprisingly more power than a goal in the distant future. That's a good idea.
Please try it yourself. Yes, I recommend it. Now, when talking to friends about those Japanese sweets,
the expression 'oishisou' (looks delicious) appeared in the video. 'Oishisou', right?
It's a very commonly used word.
From here, let's think about the relationship between grammar and psychology. That's good. Until now, I thought this word 'sou' was
just a word to convey facts. The fact that you see it with your own eyes and feel that way, right? Yes.
But does it have another meaning?
Of course, it also has the function of conveying the appearance of a state, but in casual conversation, it has a deeper role. A deeper role?
What is it? It is the role of inviting the other person into your own feelings. Inviting? Please tell me a little more in detail. Yes.
For example, imagine a friend has a new game and you see it. Yes, I imagined it.
If you said 'That game is interesting,' how would it sound?
Yeah, it sounds like just an objective report. It gives a slightly cold impression. That's right.
でも
But
If I say 'It looks interesting,' how about that? Oh, that's completely different. It feels like, 'I am just as excited as you are right now.' That's exactly it.
It's not about conveying a fact, but a sign that you are empathizing with their happy feelings.
I see. By using 'sou' (it looks/seems), a space is created between the two of you to share that happy feeling. Yes.
This is the biggest reason why casual conversation flows well. Now, may I ask a slightly tricky question? Of course, go ahead.
Suppose a friend is shivering in a very cold place. Yes, a very cold place.
At that time, instead of saying 'It is cold,' you would say 'It looks cold,' right?
Are you inviting the other person in this case too? That's a wonderful question.
In that case, rather than inviting them,
it might be more accurate to say you are entering the other person's situation. Entering?
Yes, by saying 'It looks cold,' you are conveying that you feel their coldness as if it were your own. Ah, I see.
It's not a report of the fact that 'it is cold.' Yes, it's a technique to soften the heart. It's not just changing the form of the words,
it's magic that makes the distance between hearts zero. That is truly the case. Listeners, next time a friend shows you something new,
please try using 'sou',
and try sharing the same feeling. Just by doing that, the other person should feel relieved that you understood their feelings. It makes them want to talk about many more things, doesn't it? Yes.
Conversation becomes much more fun. Now,
this theme of sharing feelings also appears in a scene right before a competition. It's a scene where friends who are nervous before a match call out to each other. Yes.
Instead of saying 'Ganbatte' (do your best),
they were saying 'Ganbarou' (let's do our best). This is a very important point when thinking about Japanese communication. Is that so?
Are 'Ganbatte' and 'Ganbarou' similar yet completely different? Yes,
they have completely different effects. Actually, in the past,
when I said 'Ganbatte' to a friend, they made a slightly awkward face. Perhaps they felt pressured. I wondered why,
but thinking about today's talk, was I
unconsciously leaving the other person alone? That would be the case. The word 'Ganbatte' only has one direction. One direction? Yes,
it's a one-way arrow from me to you. I see.
The person being told,
while happy to be supported,
feels the weight of having to do it all by themselves. Yes.
It's like a coach giving instructions to 'start' from the cheering section at a sports match. That's a very easy-to-understand example.
We are in a safe place while only the athlete is fighting. On the other hand, 'Ganbarou' is different.
It's the words of a teammate standing on the same ground. Is it like linking arms and saying, 'Let's go together'? That's exactly it.
'Ganbarou' is
not a one-way arrow, but shaped like a circle surrounding everyone. It's a message that says, 'You and I are doing this together.' Yes.
There is a strong kindness in not letting the other person be alone. Especially when nervous,
people tend to feel lonely. That is why this sense of 'together' becomes such a huge support. By saying 'Ganbarou' before a competition,
you are shrinking the anxious feelings and strengthening the team's bond. Yes, I think that's wonderful teamwork. But interestingly,
there was one more thing Tamao-kun said to Midori-san. What was it?
The words, 'Believe in yourself.' Ah, that's also a good phrase. This is a phrase that draws out individual strength rather than doing it together, right?
Isn't that a bit contradictory? That is the truly deep part of this conversation. Deep?
With 'Ganbarou',
we create a base of peace of mind that we are not alone and have companions. First, you create a place where you can feel safe. But,
ultimately, it is your own strength that climbs the wall.
No one else is going to climb it for you. That's true, since in bouldering, you climb alone. That's why, in the end,
the words 'Believe in yourself' become necessary. In other words, after creating a safe place,
you are pushing them from behind, saying that in the end, your inner strength is needed. That's right.
If it were only 'Ganbarou,' they might end up relying entirely on someone else. The strength to climb on their own might become weaker. But by adding 'Believe in yourself,'
they can realize the true strength within themselves. The balance between team strength and individual strength is perfect. Yes.
I think it's a very beautiful balance.
I thought they were just words of encouragement, but I'm surprised that the order and combination had such deep meanings. The power of words is truly great, after all.
When you lose confidence in your Japanese studies, please try to remember the balance of these two phrases. Yes.
When learning a language, you need both a connection with your peers and the power to believe in yourself. Now, since they approached the competition after exchanging such wonderful words, yes, what happened?
In the story,
Midori-san, in the middle,
had a scene where she said she thought it was impossible.
That's an honest word for when you feel your limits. There are times when Japanese people don't really say they can't do something. Many people have that image.
That's why when I heard the words 'I think it's impossible,' I was a little surprised and at the same time relieved.
Relieved is an interesting reaction. Why is that? Because no matter how hard you try, there are things you can't do, right? Yes, everyone has limits.
I thought it was wonderful to have a relationship where you can honestly say it's impossible.
That's certainly true. If it were someone you didn't trust, you might force a smile and cover it up. That perspective is extremely important.
In business or formal situations, there is indeed a culture where it's hard to say 'it's impossible.' That's true. But in casual conversation, especially in conversations with really close friends,
it's not just positive words that are important. It's a relationship where you can show your weakness. Yes.
The reason she could say she thought it was impossible was because she knew her teammates would never criticize her for it. It was a word she could say precisely because she trusted her teammates. Yes.
Being able to say your negative feelings without hiding them is proof of deep trust. I see.
And as a result, they lost the competition. That's right. It was an unfortunate result.
They didn't get the 50,000 yen prize or the many Japanese sweets. Yes. That big goal we talked about at the beginning. Yes.
But Midori-san, who received a small cookie as a participation prize and ate it,
was smiling very happily, saying 'It's delicious.' Delicious,
ですね
isn't it?
How do you interpret
this ending? This teaches us that sharing the experience is more important than the result. Sharing the experience? Yes.
They lost the 50,000 yen that was their initial goal.
But they practiced together, were nervous together, and felt frustrated together. They spent a lot of time. Because of that accumulation of experience,
the participation prize cookie might have tasted better than the 50,000
yen worth of Japanese sweets. I see.
That's really true. And please pay attention to her words at that time, 'It's delicious.' 'It's delicious,' right? Yes.
Here too, 'ne' is used at the end of the sentence instead of 'oishii desu' (it is delicious).
That's true.
Is the same mechanism working here as the 'sou' (that's right) we talked about earlier? Yes.
The 'ne' or 'dane' at the end of a sentence doesn't just seek agreement from the other person. Does it have a different meaning? Yes.
It's a sign that says, 'I am enjoying this happy moment with you right now.' If it were 'oishii desu,' it would be my own personal impression. Yes.
But with 'oishii ne,' it becomes our shared experience. I see.
Casual Japanese conversation isn't a tool for accurately conveying information, is it? Yes.
It's something to warm up the atmosphere between two people. 'That's right.' 'It's delicious.' 'It was fun.'
You just add a little bit. Just by doing that, the invisible wall between the two disappears. It's like glue. That's a really good expression.
I learned in textbooks that 'ne' is an expression for confirmation, but
it's not just that; it had an important role in connecting people. That's right. Listeners, when you talk to close friends,
try to gather your courage and use 'dane.' Surely the distance between you and the other person will become closer. While it is important to use grammar correctly,
human relationships become richer with these small efforts of feeling. Truly,
that's right. Now,
today we have thought together about the movements of the heart behind various expressions. We learned a lot. Yes, 'let's do our best,' 'I think it's impossible,' 'dane.'
All of them were gentle mechanisms for placing yourself and the other person in the same space. Yes.
Learning a language
is not just about memorizing words. It is also about understanding how people of that country connect their hearts. That is exactly right. Let's return to the story about how to spend the 50,000 yen we talked about at the very beginning.

If you received 50,000 yen, what would you buy? That's a tough one. After hearing today's story, your thinking might change a little. I feel like the best thing to do is buy a lot of Japanese sweets

Everyone releases dopamine and feels happy, right? Yes. As for me, well, it's a little scary to spend it all on sweets, so
I'll buy dumplings with half and share them with friends. What will you do with the other half? To understand the deeper mechanism of two minutes later.

I will warm my heart with Japanese sweets and train my brain with the textbook. I think that is wonderful. I want to satisfy both my stomach and my mind.
