Japanese people have certain years in their lives when the worst things are destined to happen.
So what should we do about it?
We ask the gods for help through a ritual.

Hello
everyone, I'm Hitoki.
The year when the worst things happen in life is called yakudoshi.
The 'yaku' in yakudoshi means unlucky.
おく？
Okay?
First, here we return last year's amulets to the gods and prepare to receive new amulets.
Normally we wash our hands here before going inside, but now due to COVID it's not available.
If there were a lot of people, we couldn't do that, well we could still do the purification but it would take time
I wonder.
These stairs are tough!
Are you tired already?
Yeah, maybe I'm just getting old?
I need to start exercising properly soon.
Oh no, oh no, that's gone too, the clanging bell. Ah,
You're right.
So it's different from usual, it's gone because of COVID.
I mean, that thing, you can take it off.
The process up to here is the same as always, but today we'll go inside this. Ah,
Is Dad doing it too?
I see.
Well, let's go request it.
Now, let's promptly perform the yakubarai ritual.
For warding off evil,
It's hon-yaku, and it's my address so don't film it.
These unlucky years, in traditional counted age, are 25, 42, and 61 for men, and 19, 33, 37
and 61 for women.
In traditional counted age you are 1 at birth, so I, who turns 24 this year, am 25 in counted age.
Here, we'll have the purification done.
They read my name and address during the purification, but I was allowed to film except for that part, so I filmed a little.
It's warm.
During the ritual, a priest in white clothes read my address and name, and prayed to the gods to protect me.
And I offered to the gods a tamagushi, which is made from branches of a sacred sakaki tree where gods are said to reside.
Even after the ritual, there's still more to do, and inside the bag I received are things like these.
These need to be displayed in your room.
This needs to be written right here and now.
Last year is called mae-yaku, and, well, next year is called ato-yaku,
but this year is truly the worst hon-yaku year, so tie this to it, and just write your name here and break it.
Break it with a wish.
Finally, break it like this to cut off your connection to disaster yourself.
After that, take the left side home, and leave the right side at the shrine.
Last year, I thought I'd be fine without doing such a ritual, but when I didn't do the ritual
I suddenly got injured,
got dumped by my girlfriend, so many things happened, so I did the ritual and came early this year.
There are various patterns, different kinds.
They're all about 300 yen.
It's thread, ah but this is already quite popular. Ah,
You're right, wow.
Look, look, I did this lucky one last year.
These kinds of stickers are nice too.
Yeah, then maybe I'll go with a sticker again this year.
Eh, shouldn't we look through everything first?
With koban coins, I mistakenly take this out when paying money, and you can't use it.
ある
There is
There is.
There are lots of people buying charms, there are so many people.
But the one I got earlier already had a charm in it, so maybe I don't need to buy one.
Water omikuji,, it's called mizu-mikuji.
Okay, Dad gets this one.
You can't see it at first, but when you put it in water you can see it, right?
そう。
Yeah.
This fortune slip is a bit unusual, when you put it in water the writing appears so you can read it.
I'll open it and float it over there.
It's cold so I don't want to touch the water though.
Ah, it's true, wishes come true.
Eh, that's good. Ah,
Good luck!
That's good,
It's easy to understand, and also wishes will come true, and for illness it's OK if you don't build up stress, and I won't give birth though.
Dad, it says when you're giving birth please don't go outside.
But, isn't it cold?
It's cold.
At this point it's already not lucky.
This is it, stickers, this year's sticker says happiness.
That's nice, but this just makes me think of natto.
Okame natto (a product name).
I wonder what this says, Daikichi is the best but. Ah,
It's Shokichi.
In order of best fortune it's Daikichi, Chukichi, Shokichi, Kichi, Suekichi, Kyo, Daikyo.
I got Shokichi, so I guess that's about average.
After drawing a fortune slip, what's written on it is what's important.
For work, it's good to honestly listen to the other person's opinion.
For love, it's good to push forward a bit forcefully.
Relying on others won't go well. Well,
So for love it means handle it with your own strength.
For studies, you can't quite get into it, there's something in the way.
Give it your all, somehow it all doesn't feel that great.
But like
When it's like Shokichi and not that good, you tie it in a certain place
and it says it will turn into good luck, so I want to go tie it.
Isn't it amazing?
Most people who drew a bad fortune tie it here.
Will this be okay.
It's wet so you can't tie it well.
Was it okay?
OK、じゃあ
OK, then
Shall we go home.
Let's go home, yeah.
Thank you all very much.
