隠居いんきょ所しょの二階にかいで
on the second floor of the retirement quarters,
明あけにそんだ死骸しがいになって発見はっけんされました
was discovered having become a corpse at dawn.
お生いきやというのは
As for Oikiya,
裏庭うらにわに人ひと懐ふところに余あまる松まつの老木ろうぼくがあるので知しられた家いえで
it was a house known for having an old pine tree in the back garden overly friendly to people,
先代せんだいのあるじ八はち呂りょ兵へいは
the former master Hachirobei
病弱びょうじゃくのため五ご年ねん前まえに隠居いんきょし
had retired five years earlier due to poor health,
家督かとくを

夫婦養子ふうふようしの活かつ造おもとに譲ゆずって
he had handed over to the adopted couple, Katsuzo and Omoto,
老妻ろうさいのお妻つまと二人ふたり
with his old wife Otsuma, the two of them
主あるじ親おやからは老ろう活かつ続つづきになっている
continuing as retired elders apart from the main family,
小ちいさい二階屋にかいやの離はなれに住すんで
living in a small two-story detached house,
ざっぱいにこったり、ザルごを売うったり
making zappa-ni, selling zaru-go,
時間じかんをつぶすのにばかり苦労くろうするといった
struggling only to kill time,
まことに欠乏けつぼうな身みの上うえだったのです
truly a deprived lot in life it was.
その欠乏けつぼう人にんのハチロベが、老妻ろうさいのお妻つまがアザブの神霊しんれいへ行いって泊とまった晩ばん
That deprived Hachirobei, on the night his old wife Otsuma had gone to stay at the shrine in Azabu,
離はなれの二階にかい六ろく畳じょうで喉笛のどぶえをかき切きられ
had his throat cut in the six-mat second floor of the detached house,
冷つめたくなって死しんでいるのを
found turned cold and dead
朝あさの掃除そうじに行いった下した所しょの老馬ろうばに発見はっけんされ
by the old servant woman who went for morning cleaning,
お生いきや始はじまって以来いらいの騒さわぎになってしまいました
it became an uproar like never since Oikiya began.
早速さっそく医者いしゃも呼よばれ
A doctor was promptly called,
の神霊しんれいへ人ひとを走はしらせて
and a man was sent running to the shrine,
お妻つまも呼よび戻もどしましたが
and Otsuma was also called back,
もはや朝あさ時ときも薬くすりもお呼よばず
but now neither morning treatment nor medicine was of any use,
六十ろくじゅう五ご歳さいのお妻つまが
sixty-five-year-old Otsuma,
生涯しょうがいを共ともにした夫おっとを失うしなって
having lost the husband she spent her life with,
耐たえるばかりの悲惨ひさんの中なかに
amid misery with only endurance,
土地とちの御用聞ごようきき
the local constable,
赤あか羽わ橋はしの友吉、古文こぶんと共ともに乗のり込こんで一通ひととおりのことは調しらべてみましたが
Tomokichi of Akabanebashi, investigated the usual matters together with Kobun, but
さて不ぶに落おちないことばかりで
now there were only things that did not add up,
古ふるい肩かたの調しらべと力押ちからおしのほかには手てのない友吉は
Tomokichi, who had no means besides old-fashioned inquiry and force,
最初さいしょから兜かぶとを脱ぬいでしまいました
gave up from the start.
その友吉の折おり入いっての頼たのみで

三さん多子たし国くに町まちへ乗のり込こんできたのは

その日ひの昼過ひるすぎ

一応いちおうの検視けんしは済すんだものの
though a preliminary inspection was finished,
下衆げす人にんの検討けんとうもつかなくて
with no clue about the culprit,
おと村むらの手順てじゅんもつかないというごたごたの中なかです
amid confusion where even Otomura's procedure could not proceed.
善ぜん尼に型がたの親分おやぶん
Boss Zen'ni-type,
遠とおいところを呼よび立たてて済すまなかったね
Sorry to call you from so far away,
迎むかえてくれた赤あか羽わ橋はしの友吉は
Tomokichi of Akabanebashi who greeted them
四十よんじゅう絡がらみの
was around forty,
働はたらき盛ざかりで
In the prime of his working life,
このあたりでは顔かおのいい御用聞ごようききですが
he is the handsome errand man around here, but
厄介やっかいな事件じけんなどになると
when it comes to troublesome cases,
自分一人じぶんひとりでは裁さばきがつかず
he cannot judge it by himself alone,
つい年としの若わかい兵士へいしに助たすけ舟ぶねを求もとめることになるのです

とんだ修行しゅぎょうになるよ

暇ひまで暇ひまで仕し用ようがなかったんだ

兵士へいしは相手あいての素直すなおな気持きもちをこう受うけるのでした
The soldier thus received the other's honest feelings.
まったく不思議ふしぎな殺ころしで
It's a truly mysterious killing,
俺おれにも見当けんとうがつかないんだ
I can't figure it out myself either.
まあ見みてくれ
Well, take a look.
赤あか羽わ橋はしの友基ともき地ちは
The Tomo base at Akabanebashi is
策さくに立たって案内あんないします

この海うみ会かいの王子おうじ主しゅとしては
As the prince lord of this sea gathering,
妻つまも長男ちょうなんも質素しっそな方ほうですが
both his wife and eldest son are frugal, but
これが返かえってお生いき屋やの手堅てがたさと岩いわ築ちくの容易よういならぬものを忍しのばせるようでもあり
this in turn seems to hint at the solidness of the living quarters and the formidable rock construction,
なんとなく底そこ火かりのする暮くらし向むきです

本当ほんとうの官吏かんり村むらだよ

ともきちは通とおり過すぎてから教おしえてくれました

庭にわに釣つったって物もの付つきそうに見みているのは
The one gazing as if fishing in the garden is
十じゅう五ご六ろくの少年しょうねんで

小僧こぞうの幸太郎という新しん類るいの厄介者やっかいものと後あとでわかり
later found to be Kotaro the apprentice, a troublesome dependent of a new relative,
岡おかっての障子しょうじの陰かげから覗のぞいている年間ねんかんは
The year peeking from behind the shoji on the hill
隠居いんきょの死しを発見はっけんしたという下した所しょのおいまに紛まぎれもありません
is unmistakably Oima of the lower place who discovered the retired man's death.
主屋おもやから廊下ろうかで続つづいた二階にかい造つくりの離はなれ
A two-story detached house connected by a corridor from the main house,
それを抱いだくように西側にしがわに茂しげっているのは
embracing it, growing thick on the west side, is
ヤゴの老ろういきやというのを産うんだ巨大きょだいな老松ろうしょうで
a giant old pine that produced what is called the old Yago,
おそらく

江戸えど開封かいふう以前いぜんからのものでしょう
dating from before the opening of Edo,
数度すうどの火災かさいにも免めんがれて、見みたいたいの鳥とりかを見下みおろしているのは
having escaped several fires, looking down on the birds that wanted to see it,
なかなかに雄大ゆうだいな姿すがたです
it is quite a magnificent figure.
茂しげりに茂しげった老松ろうしょうの枝えだの陰いんになって
Hidden in the shade of the branches of the densely grown old pine,
離はなれの下したの部屋へやはほとんど使つかい物ものにならず
the lower room of the detached house is almost unusable,
物置ものおき同様どうように藁わら棚たなを積つめて
piled with straw shelves like a storeroom,
二階にかいの二間にけん
in the two rooms on the second floor,
六ろく畳じょうと三さん畳じょうに
six tatami and three tatami,
隠居いんきょ
the retiree,
先代せんだい八郎兵衛はちろべえとその内うち義ぎのおつまが
the former Hachirobei and his wife Otsuma,
心静こころしずかに生活せいかつしているのでした。友吉に

赤あかの他人たにんから養子ようしになっただけに
Having been adopted from a complete stranger,
申もうし分ぶんのない立派りっぱな長なが人ひとでした
he was an impeccable and splendid eldest son
寡すくな腹はらのいい
with a good appetite,
言葉ことばのハキハキした
with clear speech,
顔かおの道具どうぐは少すこし腫はれっぽい感かんじですが
though his features have a slightly puffy look,
なんとなく大所おおどころの旦那だんなといったおしの聞きいたところがあります
he somehow has the commanding air of a master of a great house
女房にょうぼうの大だい元もとは
His wife Omoto
先代せんだい八はち路じ兵へいの統一とういつ筋すじで
is of the legitimate line of the previous Hachirobei,
これはやや青白あおじろい神経質しんけいしつな大だい島しまですが
a rather pale, nervous woman,
十分じゅうぶんの才智さいちと
with ample talent and
固かた白しろな性格せいかくの持もち主ぬしで
a person of solid character,
田た子こや釈地ち人じんからは評判ひょうばんがよろしくない方ほう
who was not well spoken of by the rice dealers and landowners
一部いちぶでは
In some quarters,
亭主ていしゅの活かつ像ぞうを引ひきずり回まわして
dragging her husband the living statue around,
この内うち鬼おにがお生いき屋やの再さい配をふるっているのだという噂うわさもあります
there is even a rumor that this inner wife is wielding power in the Oikiya
お騒さわがせいたします
"We are causing you trouble,"
とんだことになりまして
"Something terrible has happened,"
後うしろにいるおもとがこう挨拶あいさつすると
when the wife behind thus greets them,
前まえに座すわっている活かつ像ぞうは
the living statue sitting in front
人形使にんぎょうつかいの人形にんぎょうのように
like a puppet of a puppeteer,
ひこりとお辞儀じぎをするのです

内うち鬼おにがお生いき屋やの諸もろもろ体からだの温度おんどを取とっているのだという世間せけんの噂うわさが
The public rumor that the inner wife is taking the temperature of all affairs of the Oikiya
必かならずしも嘘うそではない様子ようすです

平氏へいしは二ふたつみつ無駄むだなことを聞きいて
Heiji asked two or three idle questions,
次つぎの間あいだを覗のぞきました
and peeked into the next room
驚おどろいたことに

お生いき屋やの隠居いんきょの住すんでいるにしては
for the dwelling of the retired master of the Oikiya,
ちょうども何なんにもない貧まずしいな六ろく畳じょうです
it was a bare, poor six-mat room with hardly anything in it
ご院いん今日きょうは体からだが弱よわかった上うえに
"The late master was weak, and moreover,"
綺麗好きれいずきで
fond of cleanliness,
そばへ余計よけいなものを置おくのを嫌きらいましてね
he disliked having extra things placed beside him,"
ある時ときの活かつ像ぞうは
the living statue of the present time
弁解べんかいらしくそういうのです
says as if in excuse
地ちに残のこんだ部屋へや
The room left in the ground,
原始げんしのあとで一応いちおう清きよめたそうで
it seems it was roughly purified after the primitive,
生地きじめりの上うえに薄うすベリなどを敷しいて
with thin matting laid over the earthen floor,
その上うえにとこうとり
and on top of that a straw mat,
死骸しがいをそこに寝ねかしてあります
the corpse is laid there
そのそばにしおれかえっているのは
Drooping beside it
涙なみだでゆで上あげたように
as if boiled in tears,
八はち呂りょ兵衛ひょうえの老妻ろうさいのお妻つま

悲惨ひさんと激情げきじょうと絶望ぜつぼうとに再さい舐ねぶれて
worn out by misery and passion and despair,
まことに見みる影かげもありません
truly a shadow of herself
老馬ろうばの後うしろにそれを解放かいほうするように差さしのぞくのは
Peeking out from behind the old woman as if to release her
びっくりするように美うつくしい娘むすめ
is a startlingly beautiful girl
あとでそれは
afterwards it became clear she was
活かつ像ぞうの一人娘ひとりむすめで
the living statue's only daughter,
老馬ろうばには孫まごにあたる
and thus a granddaughter to the old woman,
おあきという十八じゅうはちになる彪斑むら者しゃとわかりましたが
an eighteen-year-old beauty named Oaki,
この包つつみつめた空気くうきの裏うらにピカピカする存在そんざいは
a shining presence behind this stifling air
少すくなからず八はちごろを驚おどろかした様子ようすで
looking rather startled, to say the least,
場所柄ばしょがらもわきまえず

兵士へいしの袖そでを引ひいたりなんかしております
he was even tugging at the soldier's sleeve,
死骸しがいの八はち郎ろう兵へいは
the corpse of Hachirobei
六十ろくじゅう八はちというにしては
for sixty-eight,
ひどく老衰ろうすいしておりました
he was terribly decrepit,
どこか致命的ちめいてきな病気びょうきを持もっているらしく
apparently suffering from some fatal illness,
青白あおじろいしみだらけの皮膚ひふ
pale skin covered in blotches,
細ほそい手足てあし
thin limbs,
険けわしい頬ほおなど
gaunt cheeks —
見みるから痛々いたいたしい老人ろうじんですが
a pitiful-looking old man at first glance, but
その首筋くびすじ左ひだりの方ほうから一いち経へり、頸動脈けいどうみゃくを切きって
from the left side of his neck, in one stroke, the carotid artery cut —
見みごとな手際てぎわです
a splendid piece of work.
平次へいじが一ひとあたり調しらべ終おわるから
when Heiji had finished looking around,
の目め側がわで割われて
on the eye side, cracked,
ある時ときの活かつ像ぞうその他た
the mistress Okatsu at one time and others,
全部ぜんぶおもやに引ひき取とりました
he took them all back to the main house.
刃物はものはなかったのか
Was there no bladed weapon?
平次へいじは顔かおを上あげると
Heiji looked up, and
それを待まち構かまえたように
as if waiting for that,
それが不思議ふしぎだよ

死骸しがいの側がわに短刀たんとうは確たしかにあったし

さやも部屋へやの隅すみに投なげ飛とばしていたが

その短刀たんとうには血ちも何なんにもついておらず
on that dagger there was no blood or anything,
その上うえ
and what's more,
洗あらいも拭ふきもした様子ようすはなく
with no sign of having been washed or wiped,
薄うすい錆さびまで浮ういていたとしたらどうだ
what if even a light rust was showing on it?
この通とおり

そう言いって

赤あか羽わ橋はしの玉吉は
Tamayoshi of Akabanebashi
ふところから
from his bosom,
手てぬぐいに巻まいた細身ほそみの短刀たんとうを取とり出だし
took out a slender dagger wrapped in a hand towel,
兵士へいしの前まえに押おしやるのでした
and pushed it before Heiji.
それは女持おんなもちらしい小白こはくのキャシャな短刀たんとうで
it was a delicate little dagger, seemingly a woman's,
老ろう塗ぬりのサヤは少すこし光沢こうたくを失うしなっており
its black-lacquered sheath had somewhat lost its luster,
抜ぬいてみると先端せんたんに錆さびが浮ういて
and when drawn, rust showed at the tip,
血潮ちしおの跡あとなどは一ひとつもありません
with not a single trace of blood on it.
なるほど
I see,
これは人ひとを切きった道具どうぐじゃない
this is not a tool that cut anyone.
兵士へいしはそれをサヤに納おさめてともきちに返かえしました
Heiji sheathed it and returned it to Tomokichi.
他ほかに何なんにもなかったんだよ
There was nothing else.
刃物はものがないんだからこいつは殺ころしに間違まちがいやるまい
with no blade, this must be murder, no doubt.
下手人げしゅにんは刃物はものを持もって逃にげたとして
supposing the culprit fled with the blade,
さて
well then,
抜ぬき身みの短刀たんとうが死骸しがいのそばにあったのは変へんじゃないか
isn't it odd that a bare dagger lay by the corpse?
殺ころされた人気にんきは
the murdered man
まさかこの短刀たんとうでクセモノと渡わたり合あったわけでもある
surely didn't fight off the intruder with this dagger, did he?
この担当たんとうの持もち主ぬしを聞きかなかったのか
Didn't you ask who owns this dagger?

あるじのお活かつ像ぞうも、ないぎのおもとも

その平凡へいぼんそうな三十さんじゅう女じょが
That plain-looking woman in her thirties,
前掛まえかけで手てを拭ふいて
wiping her hands on her apron,
縁側えんがわへきちんと座すわると
sat down properly on the veranda,
思おもいのほか
and unexpectedly,
しっかりものらしい血ちが出でるのです
she spoke in what seemed a steady, sensible voice
夕ゆうべから今朝けさかけてのことを詳くわしく話はなしてくれ
Tell me in detail what happened from last night to this morning
夕ゆうべ
Last night,
はご引居い様ざまはお一人ひとりで寂さびしそうでしたが
the retired master was alone and looked lonely,
遅おそくまで起おきていらした様子ようすで
but he seemed to stay up late,
私わたしが休やすむ時ときもまだ明あかりがついておりました
and when I went to bed his light was still on
窓まどを開あけていらっしゃる様子ようすで下したからもよく見みえました

寝酒ねざけは召めしあがりません

以前いぜんは少すこしずつやられましたが

三年さんねんほど前まえから

そんなことは滅多めったにないのですから、声こえをかけて庄司を開あけると

お今いまはその時ときの凄すさまじさを思おもい出だしたらしく
Oima seemed to recall the horror of that moment,
大おおきく片かた嘴くちばしを飲のみました
and took a deep gulp
平次へいじは黙だまって先さきを促うながします
Heiji silently urges her to go on
ご引居い様ざまは窓まどにもたれておりました
The retired master was leaning against the window,
首くびをうなだれて変へんな格好かっこうで
his head hanging down in a strange posture,
ところの中なかではなかったのか
Wasn't he inside the mosquito net?
床ゆかはすぐそばに敷しいてありました
The bedding was laid out right nearby
窓まどの外そとは低てい々たるお松まつ
Outside the window were low, gloomy pines,
屋根やねの上うえまで差さし伸のばした枝えだは
and branches stretching up to the roof,
もがき苦くるしむ腕うでのように
like arms writhing in agony,
古いにしえ怪かいな曲線きょくせんでのしがかります
press over in eerie curves
今朝けさ閉とじまりに変かわったところはなかったのか
Was there nothing changed about this morning's latch?
毎晩まいばん閉とじまりは私わたしがいたします
I lock up every night myself,
その上うえ、旦那様だんなさまが一度いちど見回みまわりますが
and on top of that, the master makes his rounds once,
朝あさは何なんの変かわったところもなかったと思おもいます
I don't think anything was amiss in the morning.
すると、クセものは外そとから入はいるわけはないんだな
Then, the villain couldn't have come in from outside.
この窓まどが開ひらいていただけです

そう言いいながら

平次へいじは窓まどの外そとをのぞきましたが
Heiji peered out of the window, but
傷きずび差さしがひどく腐くさっていて
the lattice was badly rotted,
クセものがこれを渡わたって窓まどへ近ちかづいた様子ようすもありません
nor does it look as if the intruder crossed over this to approach the window.
それからこんなことは申もうし上あげていいか悪わるいかわかりませんが
Then, I don't know whether I should mention this or not, but
知しっていることがあるならみんな話はなしてくれ
If you know anything, tell me everything.
後あとでわかるとうるさいことになるよ

平次へいじは一本いっぽん釘くぎを刺さしておきました

この思おもいのほか気げの回まわる女おんなは
