Hi everyone, this is Leila from Bite Size Japanese. How are you?
ですか
Is it?
This is a podcast where you can learn natural Japanese like you're talking with a friend.
Today, I want to talk about things I realized after moving to Australia,
specifically
common
everyday habits that Japanese people consider normal.
Well, it's been two months since I came to Australia,
and of course, I've learned a lot about Australia in these two months, but it's kind of the opposite,
I've come to understand Japan
much better now.
So in this episode,
I'd like to introduce some of the things I recently noticed that Japanese people consider normal,
commonplace
habits to everyone.
Okay, first one.
あのね
You know,
anime and manga are super common in Japan, right?
だけど
But
actually, my husband's parents are British, and they don't watch anime.
That was honestly the thing that surprised me the most.
For me,
anime,
like Studio Ghibli
and others,
there are so many great works, and I used to watch Ghibli films normally in Japan,
so last week,
since I'm currently living with my husband's parents,
I invited them to watch
Princess Mononoke together.
And their reaction was like, 'Meh'
or 'I don't want to watch it.'
So,
で
since it's a really good work and you can learn about Japan too,
I asked them a few times if they'd watch it, but
it seemed like
なんか
just the word 'anime'
made them not want to watch it.
I was a bit
shocked
ショック
by that.
Do you watch anime?
And in your circle,
is there anyone who doesn't like anime?
What is it about anime
that they don't like?
I didn't understand, so I looked it up on Google.
And it said that
in Western countries, people think
that...
Childish
work
It seems they have that impression
But is this really true?
And another thing is
Well, Japanese anime is, after all
その
that
Anime's
expressions exist, right?
For example
まあ
well
Even when a character runs in anime, somehow
it's like, very exaggerated
Exaggerated means, compared to actually running, it looks like they're running even more, somehow
こう
like
making the expression of running appear stronger
Well, they call it exaggerated
Well, if you haven't watched much anime, it might indeed seem a bit
strange. Because you're not used to it
That might be the reason
Yeah, so I was a little shocked
And especially, I
wanted them to see Ghibli works
And Ghibli is
not particularly
Among Ghibli, there is
no exaggerated expression at all, honestly
だから
So
once you watch it
even though it should absolutely be fine
it has a wonderful story, but
なんか
somehow
they don't seem to want to watch it
Well, this is my first culture shock
Do you all watch anime?
I love Ghibli works
I love all of them
だから
So
I think it's a waste not to see such wonderful works
and if you haven't seen them yet, please
try watching various anime
Yes, well, this is the first one, you know
The second one
What surprised me was
In Australia
there's no entrance like in Japan
これも
This too
I knew about it, but
Still, having no entrance is, even now, a little
strange feeling
When you enter the house
Well, there is a space like an entrance hall
そこに
there
shoes
but there's no place to put them
で
and
I currently live with my husband's parents
my husband's parents
when they come home from outside, they keep their shoes on inside the house
and walk around
and conversely
with their shoes off
barefoot
they walk around the garden
で
and
the garden has lots of weeds growing, and well, there's dirt too
but they walk on the garden without wearing shoes
and I think it's strange because in Japan
when going outside, almost everyone
wears
shoes
and if they don't wear shoes, it's considered dirty
there are many people with that kind of mindset
うん
yeah
if a child
walks outside without wearing shoes, the parents get angry
so this is also quite a cultural shock
ですね
yes
well, for me
I got used to it quickly, so
it's not like I was completely shocked and couldn't believe it
but
it's really different from Japan, I think
yes, cultural shock, the third one
this one might surprise everyone too
it's about how to wash dishes
you know, when everyone washes dishes
how do you
wash them?
when I
lived in Japan
I would wet the sponge
apply dish soap and make foam
then wash the dishes
with the sponge
and finally
rinse off the foam and dirt with water
then
dry the dishes
でも
but
Jack's
His father and mother are a little different
First, in the sink
you fill it with hot water
into that
you put in detergent
and when you do that, well
you get a lot of bubbles with the hot water, right
and in that
you wash the dishes
those dishes
you don't rinse them with water at the end
with that dirty water and
in the bubbles, the washed dishes
you leave them as is to dry
and while they're drying
well, the dishes
are covered in bubbles, right
and well, once they're dry, the bubbles disappear, but
I was really surprised by this
In Japan
bubbles
are dirty, so you absolutely have to rinse them off
that's what
is common sense
で
and
so for example
when I was really little
when I washed dishes
well, I wasn't good at it yet, so the washed dishes still had bubbles on them
then my grandmother
got angry, saying they still had bubbles on them
and it was like she washed the dishes I had washed again
so yeah, this was pretty surprising
How do you all wash your dishes?
I think many British people might wash them like I just described
I think
but I'm not sure. If you know, please let me know
で
and
these dishes I washed at Jack's house
the bubbles on the dried dishes
disappeared, and moreover
I actually licked those dishes
and they didn't really taste like bubbles
or rather, they didn't taste like bubbles at all
でただ
but just
the ceramic
frying pan, like a non-stick one
still had a bit of a bubble taste
うんね
Yeah
It's strange. It's not like I'm trying to save water or anything, especially since there are plenty of places around here with lots of water.
I don't think that's the case.
So it's really strange.
I mean, no matter how you wash it, it gets reasonably clean, so I think honestly any method is fine, but this was the most surprising.
はい
Yes.
Next, regarding the differences between Japan and Australia
This might be the fourth point. The fourth point is about meals.
In Japan,
daily meals are
usually
you know.
Traditional
rather, it's more like
home cooking, I guess.
Yeah, pretty much any dish is
made to suit Japanese people's tastes, to match Japanese people's sensibilities,
の
like
curry rice, for example,
nikujaga with potatoes, or
basically rice
is the center, right?
Honestly, I don't really
understand Australian cuisine that well.
Australia is a country of immigrants, so there are probably many different types of cuisine
available.
And
my husband's parents are
British, so
で
daily meals
really consist of
all sorts of
dishes.
The other day, I made okonomiyaki,
before that it was
meatballs
or rice noodles, and before that it was
pie.
Before that, it was steak, and before that,
sometimes
food.
で
at
a little
sometimes with food
It's really quite different
です
Isn't it?
But compared to the time in Japan
Rice is
Less, isn't it?
There are days when I don't eat rice at all
But if you're living in Japan, I think
You'd probably eat rice at least once a day
Well, but I like any delicious food
So it's not really a problem at all
I just want to eat a bit more vegetables
だけど
But
Well, honestly, Jack's mom always
Is a good cook
And makes food for me
で
And
Jack's mom loves making cakes and cookies
And she makes them a lot
So in the kitchen
There are always about four kinds
Of homemade sweets
Lying around
だから
So
It's dangerous, isn't it? Because if they're there, I end up eating them
I've been eating too much lately
Next, another one
Between Japan
And overseas
Makeup and fashion
This is definitely different
Girls, especially young women's
Makeup is
Very natural-looking
Isn't it?
I think you all know if you see
Their makeup is
A bit
Light
You know, light and cute
で
And
When I was in university
My friends
Mostly wore light makeup
When going out with friends
Or to the nearby
Shopping mall
Most people would
Wear natural makeup
But somehow, Australian makeup is
different,
I think
のかな
isn't it?
No-makeup
or full-on makeup,
one of those two
I feel like it's more common.
あとは
Also,
many people in Australia wear perfume.
Every morning
to Sanpo
I go, you see,
で
and
I pass by my high school, but
その
the
girls' hair styling and
scent—
when I pass by,
absolutely, it's the smell of perfume. Everyone wears so much perfume.
I think this is different from Japan.
but probably,
softer
milder
scents
they choose, I think.
What I think is, in Japan, when doing stylish makeup,
not to show that one is trying hard.
Like, 'I haven't done much, but
I smell nice
and I'm cute'—
that's what natural makeup is for,
a soft perfume scent.
That might be it.
Wearing too much perfume
or having heavy makeup
makes it obvious
and is embarrassing.
That kind of feeling
I think Japanese people have.
Do you have that kind of feeling in your country?
Like if oneself
is trying hard and the other person notices, it's a bit embarrassing—
I think there might be.
I thought that. Also, Japanese girls
are really stylish, right?
In places like Osaka or Tokyo
when walking down the street.
Like this, the young girls around me are all
みんな
all
just as perfect as if they came out of a magazine, that level of perfection
in fashion, you know. From shoes to hair
なんか
like
everything, like, this and that
the image of so many people being that fashionable
うん
yeah
but in Australia, it's not like that at all
of course there are fashionable people occasionally, but it's quite
rare, I think
more than that, everyone is
wearing much more
simple clothes
In Japan, it's like
when you walk on the street, you can tell
that this is the trend right now, you know
everyone is fashionable, isn't it?
これは
this is
I thought it was indeed completely different
Next is,
ah, that's right
the difference in greetings
In Japan, but
hugs are
not common at all. A hug is when you, like, embrace the other person
with both arms, tightly
hugging them
the English word 'hug'
right?
When you say 'hug', it sounds a bit friendly. But if you say 'embrace', it
sounds a bit
sexy, or
in a sexual way
so it sounds sexual, you know
for greetings, or
Japanese people do use the word 'hug' when they say hug someone
How about in your country? Do you hug friends,
or hug when meeting someone?
Since Japan doesn't have a hugging culture,
people still feel quite
embarrassed
about hugging, I think
There's an interesting story,
Jack, you know,
my husband
he was working with
a teacher and when he tried to hug her, it became really awkward, you know
まあ
Well
The reason Jack thought about hugging the other teacher was that the other teacher had
some serious work issues
and faced a tough situation
and became distressed because of that
and ended up crying, apparently
でその
and then
told Jack about her troubles
while talking, you know
で
and
well, so she calmed down
Jack wanted to hug her to comfort her, saying it's okay, in that sense
and the other person was apparently a woman more than ten years older than Jack
but the moment Jack tried to hug her
the woman immediately
like, sort of
her body seemed to recoil, like she was escaping from Jack or couldn't handle it, apparently
and Jack was like, oh right, I forgot this is Japan
and it became really awkward
that's what apparently happened
well, that's probably how it is in Japan, hugs are, well
totally not common between couples
maybe a little between lovers
among family members
even between parents and children, hugs are
well, not common, I think
I don't hug my own parents or anything
it's too embarrassing to do
hugging my sister is also impossible
super embarrassing
please remember that
はい
yes
also, one more thing at the end
something I notice after coming to Australia is
when living in Japan
of course, but totally
different
で
and
well, faces might look similar, that's true
also Koreans
totally different
country, and
different
well, race
right?
but somehow, when you come to Australia
Yeah, that's probably true
But like, Asian-looking
people
I wish they wouldn't
It's fine, but
in case of
I want to ask, what do you do?
But living in Japan,
white
people, right?
Yeah, sure
That's true, I'm sorry
Living in Japan, and if
there's a white person
probably
If they're friendly, I definitely say 'Hello'
But maybe
the other person
might not understand English
white equals
English speaking
person
Yeah, really, that's true
I just felt sorry about that
うん
Yeah
Also, one more thing
What I think about coming to Australia is
まあ
Well
This is a country of immigrants with many different races
So if there's an Asian like me
It's completely normal
だから
So
everyone just talks to me normally
Even when I went shopping at the supermarket, people talked to me
But
I'm still not confident in my English, so I'm happy when people talk to me
When I can't respond well
I feel sorry
But yeah
Even as a foreigner, normally
as part of Australian society
as one person
thinking that everyone
will accept me is really nice
It wouldn't be like that in Japan
Right?
だって
Because
If they didn't look like that
Foreigners
You know, so
だから
That's why
Jack living in Japan like this
One thing he hated was being mistaken for a tourist no matter how much time passed
Even when going shopping
When someone asks, 'Are you here on vacation?'
Or when I speak a little Japanese and they say, 'Your Japanese is really good!'
Having lived in Japan for over 5 years
Even working at the same school
You know
なんか
Being praised for using chopsticks
Like that kind of thing
That sort of
そういう
Being treated as a foreigner, Jack seemed to hate it
Is that so? It's true that doesn't happen in Australia
It's a good thing, but I still get a bit nervous
Because I'm not confident in my English
Yes
So, in this episode, I introduced to everyone the things I noticed about Japanese people while living abroad
はい
Things that are considered common sense in Japan
Thank you so much for listening until the end
