Yes, hello everyone
I'm Leila
How are you?
This podcast is like talking to friends
Today, I'd like to have a fun chat with everyone about friends
Do you have many friends?
Or few?
Making friends with people is easy
Or difficult
I wonder if you want more friends
How about it?
Friends are actually a pretty interesting topic
Depending on the person
Whether you want more friends
Or think you don't need them differs
It's interesting, isn't it?
I'm the type who has very few friends
But when I meet someone for the first time
They say something like, 'Leila, you seem to have many friends'
In my case
I really enjoy talking with people
And I can talk comfortably with someone I've just met without being too nervous
So it might seem like I have many friends
But that's not the case at all
I actually have very few
Yes, so today, I'd like to talk about the topic of friends
Like where the line is between an acquaintance
And a friend
Also, about being friends with someone of a different gender
I'm a woman, so in my case, can I be friends with men of a different gender?
Some people think
どこから
They can't be friends with someone of a different gender
Because it always ends up becoming a romantic relationship
あとは
I've heard opinions saying true friendship isn't possible
Also, as you get older
And become busier
The number of friends tends to decrease
It does, doesn't it?
It's different from their own gender
They can't become friends with people of
There are people who think so, right?
Because it always ends up in romantic relationships
There's also the opinion that you can't become true friends
I've heard that
And well, when you become an adult
While being busy with various things
Somehow the number of friends
Decreases
Right, somehow
Even friends I used to contact every day
When you become an adult, somehow
this contact
once a month
becomes once a year, and eventually you stop contacting each other entirely
とかね
like that
Well, there are various things like that, right?
So in this episode, well, what are friends? What are true friends?
On that theme, well, with everyone
I'd like to talk as if it's just casual chat
Before making this episode
number of friends
I looked it up
You know, it seems like younger people have more friends
If you're a student
the average number of friends
is
44, apparently
That's a lot, right?
But I can understand why
If you're a student
you go to school every day
and see classmates
through daily conversations, you become friends
well, that's common, right?
Also, in Japan
there are many club activities, so
you make friends in your class
and after school
you also make friends through club activities
well, it's a period where it's quite easy to make friends, right?
And as you become an adult
that decreases
The number of friends
for people in their twenties
is 21
apparently
うん
Yeah
And well, in your thirties
it decreases further to
about 15, apparently
How many friends do you all have, roughly?
But you know what's interesting?
The number of close friends you always hang out with
is small
are said to be 4
うん
Yeah
But in my case
I don't even have four friends to play with
low birth rate period
Even with very close friends
we meet only a few times a year
though sometimes we don't even meet that many times
So really, I don't have many friends
And I'm not that bad at contacting friends online
but... well, that is
contacting them
unless there's something specific
I'm not the type to initiate contact, you know
But I think many people do, well, really
about trivial things
probably exchange messages about them
You know, I find that exchanging messages
about trivial things like that
just doesn't continue for me
で
So
I really have no idea what to talk about
if there's no topic
I end up wondering what to talk about
So in my case
まあ
well
if there's no topic, I don't contact them
Therefore, during college
friends I was close with
とも
as well
inevitably
I stopped contacting them
some friends I haven't spoken to in two or three years or more
But those people now
can I still call them friends?
maybe they're no longer friends?
I wonder, what do you think?
How do you all define a friend?
What do you think
what conditions would make
someone a friend?
For example
the two of you
often go out to eat together
とか
or
can talk about your worries
must meet at least once a year
what conditions would
make you consider someone a friend?
It's tough, right?
Also, if the other person
doesn't think of me as a friend
I feel kind of embarrassed thinking of someone as a friend from my side
I end up feeling
Embarrassed and also kind of sorry
That's the kind of feeling I have
But maybe it's fear, like if the other person
Doesn't think of me as a friend
I might be scared of that
Probably for that reason, I often don't proactively
Reach out
Maybe that's why
So I think what's kind is
In the end, having the courage to reach out yourself
Is necessary, I thought
You know, if I just think 'they'll contact me'
and wait, that's really not good
You know, actually, when I was in high school
There was one
Friend I was close with
We were in the same class
で
And
She was also a very quiet type
で
And
であまり
And not very
Type to reach out proactively
And since I'm the same type
Before we graduated high school, together with her
Even after high school graduation
Let's try hard to stay in touch, right? Otherwise both of us
Will definitely not contact each other, so let's try hard, we talked about it
But you know, since high school graduation, not even once
Have we stayed in touch. It's been over ten years now
Yeah, so
Really, you know, from your side
Even if it's scary, somehow
Try reaching out
The courage
Is really important
I think lately
だけど
But
I don't think it's necessary to force yourself to reach out either
For example, like
I have a friend I made during university
But with her
I haven't been in touch for about two years
And, well, why is that
Actually, two years ago
The two of us actually met and went on a trip together
And I've really liked her since university
But you know, two years ago
When we met after a long time and went on the trip
Well, you know, when we were together, I didn't really feel that it was that fun
I didn't really think it was that enjoyable
It felt like I didn't know what to talk about
She was already
Working hard at her job at that time
And she worked overtime every day until 8 PM
で
And
She also kept two cats and was married
She had a fancy car too, you know
And, you know,
こう
Like,
The two of us
Common, shared
Topics
We couldn't really find any
And even though we
Went on a trip together
That much
The conversation
Didn't really liven up, you know
When I say the conversation livened up, it means the conversation would kind of flow and become fun
Like, we'd talk a ton and it would be lively, that's what livening up means
Well, that didn't happen. And after coming back from that trip, you know, ah
I thought it wasn't really fun
で
And
I didn't feel like I wanted to meet again
And probably the other person was thinking the same thing about me
So the other person also
Stopped contacting me, and I stopped contacting them too
And like that, for more than two years now
We haven't been in touch
で
And
Well, honestly, I'm fine with that
I really liked her a lot
I still like her now
But I thought there's no need to force myself to contact her
Does everyone have experiences like that?
はい
Yes
And also one more thing
What I want to ask everyone is
With someone of a
Different gender than yourself
Well, I'm female, so, well, a man
Do you think you can become friends?
こう
Like,
A person of a different gender than yourself, they call it the opposite sex, you know
With the opposite sex
Friendship
Friendship, well, a friendship relationship
Is it possible, or impossible?
Is it possible?
どうか
Somehow
This is quite a big theme, isn't it?
Actually, when I was a teenager,
with the opposite sex
friendship was
I thought it was impossible, you know.
I don't know why. It just felt impossible.
When I was a teenager, I really didn't have any male friends for a long time.
I wonder why that was.
So whenever I talked to a boy, I was always really nervous.
And really, in my 20s
になって
after
なんか
somehow
like through work or something,
after I started talking to people of the opposite sex, well, to people of the opposite sex,
あ
ah
friendship with the opposite sex
I started thinking that it's possible, once I got into my 20s.
Do you get it? Do you all feel the same way? Yeah.
Ah, probably, I
from around the age of 14,
so far in my life,
I've always had a boyfriend.
Yes, I'm married now.
I've been with Jack for over 8 years, and
my ex-boyfriend
for about 6 years
or so
we were together.
always
I was with my boyfriend, and somehow, in my mind,
even though I had a boyfriend,
if I made a male friend,
I'd feel guilty towards my boyfriend.
It's like, even though I have a boyfriend,
going out to play with a male friend felt a bit, like,
awkward.
I think I probably had that kind of feeling.
Even now, honestly, I still
feel a bit awkward about it.
Well, of course, now that I'm
an adult,
well, I don't know, I can talk to the opposite sex normally now, but
それでも
still,
even though I'm married, for example,
何なに
what?
going out alone with a male friend
feels awkward; in that case, I'd rather bring my husband along, that kind of thinking comes up.
I moved to Australia about two months ago, but
When I was still in Japan,
I thought it would be nice if I made friends in Australia
and if I made friends, I could
speak in English and thought it would be good to improve my English,
but actually, making friends is really
difficult
In my case,
こう
it's like,
even without any particular reason,
contacting someone
is hard, so
that makes it even more difficult
and so I often
don't have many chances to meet other people
it's really difficult
What kind of friends are you looking for right now?
Well, I think it's probably impossible for me,
but I wish I had a friend nearby
When I lived in Japan,
well, I lived in Okayama Prefecture,
I had a friend who lived about five to ten minutes away by bicycle from my house
Well, she was a friend of my husband Jack,
so I often
went to her house together
で
and
looking back, it was really fun
Because she lived nearby, for example
on weeknights
I would go to her house
casually eat dinner and watch a movie or something
and in summer,
after work, we'd borrow her car
go to the beach near our homes
and swim,
since it was the countryside, there were hardly any people at the beach, so it was really fun
Nowadays, people move around a lot,
so it's not often that you have
a close friend living near your home
I don't think that happens much,
but still
it's better to have friends you can meet easily
just hang out with a friend
super casually
like meeting up for a bit on a weeknight
or maybe going somewhere together
and having that kind of casual friendship
would be nice
but it's difficult as you get older
I wish I had friends like that
Well, it's difficult though. When you become an adult, that's why
I envy people who have friends like that
だけど
But
Then I'll do my best to make friends
If you ask me if I can make an effort
といえば
to say
I can't
I can't make an effort. Well, I end up thinking it's a hassle
そう
Yeah
In my case, I really have few friends. Well, almost none
Because I get along really well with my husband Jack
だから
So
Honestly, I don't feel that lonely
Instead of having friends
Jack and my family
I think I want to cherish them a lot
Also
The reason I want friends
Depends on the person, right?
なんか
Like
Do I want friends because I'm lonely?
From that friend
Can I learn various things? That's why I want friends?
Or is it because I'm anxious? That's why I want friends?
Well, really
It depends on the person
You know, for me
When I was in my teens, when I was a student
Probably because I was anxious about not having friends
I think I wanted them
Yeah, that's right, really during elementary, middle, and high school
There were groups in the class, of course
で
And
That group
If I didn't join
If I stayed alone for too long, from the surroundings
I was worried they'd think I was weird
That made me a bit anxious
But I wasn't good at making friend groups
Not good at all
So I was always alone in class
Not exactly, but
Friends, really
I couldn't make them
After graduation, the friends I kept in touch with, really only about one
I couldn't make many
うん
Yeah
You know, I'm not good at being in groups
Actually
Even now, it's like that
Not coming. Well, Jack's family
I went out to hang out with them, but
well, all of us
like 6 or 7 people
or so
いて
were there, and
when there are about that many people
wow, I'm the type who gets exhausted
I can't talk at all
I can't join the conversation
and I don't know what to do, so anyway, I ended up playing with the dog alone or something
in the yard
and like pulling weeds or something like that. Really, I'm not good with groups
But one-on-one
or small numbers, like three or two, I'm totally fine and can talk, but when it's a group, really
I can't handle it
Yes, well, today we talked about various things regarding friends
まあ
well
to be honest, my feelings now are
I don't absolutely need one now, but it would be nice if I had someone
but I don't want to work hard to make friends, that kind of feeling. Yes
まあ
well
I guess that's it for today
