Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about improving.
はい、こんにちは。この「上達」についての英語レッスンへようこそ。
As humans, we have different skills and abilities, and often we have skills and abilities that we want to improve.
人間にはさまざまなスキルや能力があり、私たちは多くの場合、向上させたいスキルや能力を持っています。
We want to be better at speaking English today than we were a week ago.
私たちは、一週間前よりも今日英語を話すのが上手くなりたいのです。
There's also skills and abilities that you don't need to improve.
また、向上させる必要のないスキルや能力もあります。
I mean, I know how to drive.
例えば、私は車の運転の仕方を知っています。
I don't need to improve that skill or ability, but there are some that we need to.
そのスキルや能力を向上させる必要はありませんが、向上させる必要のあるものもあります。
So in this English lesson, I will teach you.
ですから、この英語レッスンでは、私が教えるのは、
12 different English phrases we use to talk about improving, and the first one is to make progress.
上達について話すために使う12の異なる英語フレーズで、最初のフレーズは「進歩する」です。
When you say that you are going to make progress, it means that you are going to improve.
進歩すると言うとき、それは向上するという意味です。
You are going to be better than you were at the starting point.
出発点よりも良くなるということです。
So, if I said I want to make progress with my English learning, I basically am saying that what I know today, I want to know more in a week, I want to know much more in a month.
ですから、もし私が「英語学習で進歩したい」と言った場合、基本的には今日知っていることを、一週間後にはもっと知りたい、一ヶ月後にはさらに多く知りたいと言っているわけです。
So when you decide to make progress, it means you're going to improve at one of your skills or abilities.
進歩すると決めるということは、自分のスキルや能力の一つが向上するということです。
Before we continue with the lesson though, I do want to thank Preply, the sponsor of this video.
レッスンを続ける前に、この動画のスポンサーであるPreplyに感謝したいと思います。
If you want to make progress with your English learning, Preply is a great place to find an English tutor to help you do just that.
英語学習で進歩したいのであれば、Preplyは英語の講師を見つけてそれを実現するのに最適な場所です。
And if you use the link in the description below today, you'll get 50% off your first lesson.
そして、今日説明欄のリンクを使うと、初回レッスンが50%オフになります。
The second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase.
今日教えたい2番目のフレーズは、
To get better at.
「上手くなる」です。
So when you get better at something, it means you are improving.
何かが上手くなるということは、向上しているということです。
Let's look at, for instance, your ability to drive when you are first learning to drive.
例えば、運転の能力を見てみましょう。運転を学び始めたときのことです。
When you first start driving, you're not very good at it, but you work at it because you want to get better at driving.
運転を始めたばかりのときはあまり上手ではありませんが、運転が上手くなりたいので練習します。
You want to be a safer driver.
より安全なドライバーになりたいのです。
You want to be more confident when you drive.
運転するときにもっと自信を持ちたいのです。
Your ability to drive needs to improve because you want to be a good driver.
良いドライバーになりたいので、運転の能力を向上させる必要があります。
You want to get better at it.
上手くなりたいのです。
So that's the second phrase.
それが2番目のフレーズです。
When you want to improve your ability to do something, you want to get better at it.
何かをする能力を向上させたいとき、それは上手くなりたいということです。
The third English phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to get the hang of something.
今日教えたい3つ目の英語のフレーズは「to get the hang of something」です。
When you get the hang of something, it means you have studied it, you have practiced it, you have become relatively good at it.
何かをマスターする（get the hang of something）というのは、それを学び、練習し、比較的上手になったということです。
So if you look behind me, there are people who are fishing.
私の後ろを見てみると、釣りをしている人がいます。
I'm sure when they first started fishing, they weren't good at it.
彼らが最初に釣りを始めたとき、上手ではなかったはずです。
But as they did more and more of it, they slowly but surely were able to get the hang of it.
しかし、どんどん釣りを続けるうちに、少しずつですが確実にコツをつかめるようになりました。
They could cast, they could reel, they could take the fish off the hook.
キャストもでき、リールも回せ、魚を針から外すこともできるようになったのです。
You have to do all those things.
それらすべてをやらなければなりません。
You have to get the hang of it so that you can do it well.
上手にできるようになるには、コツをつかまなければなりません。
So that's your third phrase: to get the hang of something means to learn how to do it well after practicing and doing it a lot.
これが3つ目のフレーズです。「to get the hang of something」とは、たくさん練習して繰り返すことで、それをうまくできるようになるという意味です。
The fourth English phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to have.
今日教えたい4つ目の英語のフレーズは「to have」です。
Come a long way.
Come a long way.（大きな進歩を遂げる）
This is a phrase we use to describe something that someone has become a lot better at doing.
これは、誰かがあることをかなり上手になったことを表すときに使うフレーズです。
So if you study English for a year, I would say, "Wow, you've come a long way.
英語を1年間勉強したなら、「わあ、大きな進歩を遂げたね」と言うでしょう。
Your pronunciation is a lot better.
発音はかなり良くなりました。
Your ability to understand people is a lot better.
人々の話を理解する能力もかなり良くなりました。
You have come a long way.
あなたは大きな進歩を遂げました。
" Basically, what I'm saying is that a year ago you weren't as good at those things, and today you're really, really good at them.
基本的に言いたいのは、1年前はそれらがあまり上手ではなかったのに、今日は本当に本当に上手になったということです。
You have come a long way.
あなたは大きな進歩を遂げました。
It's as if you were on a journey, a learning journey, and now you're at the end of it, and you're way better at doing that thing that you were practicing.
まるで旅、つまり学びの旅をしていて、今その終わりにいて、練習してきたことのできるようになっただけではありませんか。
The fifth phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase "to be on track.
今日教えたい5つ目のフレーズは「to be on track」です。
" When you are practicing something, when you are doing something regularly, you want to do it properly.
何かを練習しているとき、何かを定期的にしているとき、きちんとやりたいと思うでしょう。
You want to stay on track.
軌道に乗ったままでいたいのです。
You want to be on track.
軌道に乗っていたいのです。
When you are on track, it means you are doing all of the steps properly.
軌道に乗っているというのは、すべてのステップを正しく行っているということです。
You're doing that thing regularly so that you can improve.
上達できるように、そのことを定期的にしているのです。
As you continue...
あなたがこれからも...
continue to study English, I hope that you can stay on track.
英語の勉強を続けるなら、軌道に乗ったままでいてほしいと思います。
If you're on track, you will improve and you will get better at it.
軌道に乗っていれば、上達し、より上手になるでしょう。
The next English phrase I wanted to teach you is the phrase "to take it to the next level.
次に教えたい英語のフレーズは「to take it to the next level」です。
" When you take something to the next level, it means you make it more difficult to practice or do that thing so that you can improve.
何かを「take it to the next level」するとは、上達するために、その練習や実践をより難しくすることを意味します。
Often when you're learning English, people will forget to take it to the next level.
英語を学んでいるとき、人はつい「take it to the next level」することを忘れがちです。
They'll get very comfortable reading books that are really easy, listening to music over and over again without listening to new music, or watching TV shows that are really easy to understand.
とても簡単な本を読み続けたり、新しい音楽を聴かずに同じ音楽を何度も聴き続けたり、とても理解しやすいテレビ番組を見たりしてしまうのです。
But if you want to take it to the next level, you have to make it more difficult.
でも、レベルを上げたいなら、難易度を上げなければなりません。
You have to do things that help you to improve.
上達に役立つことをする必要があります。
So when you take something to the next level, it means you make it more challenging, or you change it in a way to help you improve.
つまり、何かを「take it to the next level」とは、それをよりチャレンジングにしたり、上達を助けるように変えたりすることを意味します。
Before we continue with the lesson, I do want to stop and once again thank Preply, the sponsor of this video.
レッスンを続ける前に、この動画のスポンサーであるPreplyにもう一度お礼を申し上げたいと思います。

英語を話すのが上手になりたい、英語を話す人を理解できるようになりたい、変な句動詞をマスターしたいなら、Preplyはまさにそのような講師を見つけるのに最適な場所です。

Preplyにアクセスして、今日、下の説明欄のリンクを使ってください。初回レッスンが50%オフになります。
The seventh phrase I wanted to teach you today about improving is the phrase to brush up on.
今日、上達について教えたい7つ目のフレーズは「to brush up on」です。
When you brush up on something, it means you already know a little bit about it, and maybe you haven't done it or studied it or practiced it for a while.
何かをbrush up onするというのは、それについて少しは知っているけれど、しばらくそれをしたり、勉強したり、練習したりしていないということです。
So you want to just get a little bit better and review.
なので、少しでも上手くなって復習したいということです。
You want to brush up on it.
それをbrush up onしたいのです。
Before you go to have an interview for a new job, you might want to brush up on all of the vocabulary that might be used in that interview.
新しい仕事の面接を受ける前に、その面接で使われるかもしれない語彙を全部brush up onしておきたいかもしれません。
You might want to brush up on the types of questions that will be asked.
聞かれるかもしれない質問の種類をbrush up onしておきたいかもしれません。
It means you sort of already know, but you just want to be sure.
つまり、ある程度は知っているけれど、確実にしたいということです。
You want to review what you know so that when you get there, you know what you're talking about.
知っていることを復習して、そこに着いたときには何の話をしているか分かるようにしたいのです。
So, when you brush up on something, it simply means to practice it so that you know it as well as you did the first time you learned it a long time ago.
つまり、何かをbrush up onするというのは、昔初めて学んだときと同じくらい理解できるように、それを練習するということです。
The eighth phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase "to keep at it.
今日教えたい8つ目のフレーズは「to keep at it」というフレーズです。
" When you are trying to improve, it means you are most likely practicing something.
何かを改善しようとしているとき、それはおそらく何かを練習しているということです。
And when we say you need to keep at it, it means you need to practice regularly.
そして、keep at itする必要があると言うときは、定期的に練習する必要があるということです。
If you are trying to get stronger, you need to keep at it.
強くなりたいのであれば、keep at itする必要があります。
You need to go to the gym and work out, and you need to keep at it.
ジムに行って運動する必要があり、それをkeep at itする必要があります。
You need to go two or three or four days a week.
週に2日か3日か4日行く必要があります。
If you want to improve your English you need to keep at it.
英語を上達させたいのであれば、keep at itする必要があります。
You need to do it five days a week maybe six days a week.
週に5日、もしかしたら週に6日やる必要があります。
But don't forget sometimes taking a day off is good as well.
でも、たまに休むのも良いことなので忘れないでください。
So in English when we say you need to keep at it, you need to keep at something.
英語でkeep at itする必要がある、何かにkeep at itする必要があると言うとき、
It means have a plan to do it regularly and stick to that plan.
それは、それを定期的に行う計画を立てて、その計画を守るということです。
The ninth phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to stick with it, which I kind of just mentioned in the previous when I was talking about keep at it.
今日教えたい9つ目のフレーズは「to stick with it」というフレーズで、これは先ほどkeep at itについて話したときに少し触れたものです。
When you stick with it, it means the same thing.
何かにstick with itするというのは、同じ意味です。
It means to do it regularly.
定期的にやるということです。
It means to decide that you're going to do it three days a week or four days a week.
週に3日か4日やると決めるということです。
It means that every evening you're going to spend one hour doing it.
毎晩1時間それをやると決めるということです。
You're going to stick with it.
それをstick with itするのです。
The opposite would be to quit, or to stop doing something.
逆に、やめる、または何かをやめることです。
If you stick with it, you will improve.
続ければ、上達します。
If you don't stick with it, you won't improve.
続けなければ、上達しません。
So, the ninth phrase that I wanted to teach you today, to stick with it, simply means to do something regularly, to do it all the time, so that you will improve.
さて、今日教えたい9番目のフレーズ、「stick with it（続ける）」は、簡単に言えば、何かを定期的に、常にやることで、上達するためということです。
So, if you don't keep at it and you don't stick with it, eventually you will fall behind.
ですから、やり続けず、続けなければ、最終的には遅れてしまいます。
There's an amount of learning you'll want to do when learning English, and if you don't do it regularly, you will fall behind.
英語を学ぶ際には一定量の学習が必要ですが、定期的にやらなければ遅れてしまいます。
You will not make the progress that you want to make.
望んでいる進歩は得られません。
You will not improve as quickly as you want to.
思うように早く上達しません。
In fact, you won't improve at all.
実際、まったく上達しません。
When you fall behind, it's as if you're in a race, and all the other people are ahead, and you are behind them.
遅れるというのは、レース中に他の人たちがすべて先頭で、あなたが後方にいるような状態です。
You aren't making the same progress in the race that they are making.
レースで彼らと同じ進歩を遂げていないのです。
So, make sure you stick with it.
ですから、必ず続けてください。
Make sure you keep at it because you don't want to fall behind.
遅れたくないですから、やり続けてください。
So, if you fall behind, you only have one choice.
ですから、遅れてしまった場合、選択肢は一つだけです。
You need to catch up.
追いつく必要があります。
If you're trying to improve, if you're trying to make progress, if you're trying to get better at something and you fall behind, you will need to catch up.
上達しようとしている、進歩しようとしている、何かが上手くなろうとしているのに遅れてしまった場合、追いつく必要があります。
You might have to study harder.
もっと勉強しなければならないかもしれません。
You might have to study more often if you're trying to catch up with your English learning.
英語学習で追いつこうとしているなら、もっと頻繁に勉強する必要があるかもしれません。
Let's say you decided to learn one new English word a day, and then you got sick and you didn't do it for two weeks.
例えば、毎日1つずつ新しい英語の単語を覚えようと決めて、それから病気になって2週間やらなかったとしましょう。
If you want to get back on track, if you want to catch up.
軌道に戻りたい、追いつきたいのであれば。
You might need to learn two words a day or three words a day until you are back on track and learning the number of words you want to learn.
軌道に戻り、望む数の単語を学ぶようになるまで、1日に2語や3語学ぶ必要があるかもしれません。
So, if you fall behind, the best thing you can do is try to catch up.
ですから、遅れてしまった場合、できることといえば追いつこうとすることです。
Whenever we are trying to improve a skill or ability in English, we want to see results.
英語でスキルや能力を向上させようとするとき、私たちは結果が見たいものです。
When we say that you want to see results, it means that you want evidence.
結果が見たいというのは、証拠が欲しいということです。
You want to see that you are getting better.
自分が上達していることを確認したいのです。
You want to see that you are improving.
自分が向上していることを確認したいのです。
If you're learning English, you want to see results on your English test.
英語を学んでいるなら、英語のテストで結果が見たいはずです。
If you took an English test a year ago and you take another one, you want to see results.
1年前に英語テストを受け、もう一度受けたとき、結果が見たくなるでしょう。
You want to see that all of the work you did to get better, all of the work you did to improve, has paid off.
上達するためにしたすべての努力、改善のためにしたすべての努力が報われたことが見たいのです。
You want a better score on the test.
テストでより良いスコアが取りたいのです。
If you're working out, you want to see bigger muscles.
運動しているなら、もっと大きな筋肉が見たくなるでしょう。
You want to see results.
結果が見たくなるのです。
You want to feel stronger, but you also want to look more muscular.
もっと強くなったと感じたいし、見た目も筋肉っぽくしたいのです。
You want to see results.
結果が見たくなるのです。
