We're going to be here all week.
I love it.
Thanks for doing that.
That's a lot of fun.
Thanks for having us.
Do you remember?
Well, you're also headlining K Rock Cruise at Christmas, which is a local radio station here in LA.
It's it's the like big music festival.
The first one, I think, the first one you guys played was 1995.
That long time ago.
It was 1995.
Yes, I was there.
I worked at KROQ at that time.
Remember, yeah, yeah.
I worked with Kevin and Bean on the morning show, and this is the lineup at that show, just in case you forgot: Alanis Morissette,
Porno for Pyros, Sonic Youth, Presidents of the United States of America, Garbage, No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and a few others too.
That was for the day.
Yeah, I mean that was such a great time for music, you know.
Unbelievable.
The 90s.
It was so like when I hear that, I just think of like I think of like Paulie Shore and the Snapple Lady and like a Star City Hall, things like.
But but that time for music was so great.
Everyone was so everyone was young and excited and inspired, and shows like that.
Brought everyone together.
It was really like a community.
You got to meet all of these bands that you heard on the radio, and make friends, lifelong friends.
I'm still friends with most of the people that were on that gig.
You met Taylor Hawkins at that show, right?
Did I met Taylor at that show?
Wow.
I was backstage.
Our first record came out around the first around the time Alanis' first record came out.
Uh huh.
So we were doing a bunch of those festivals and radio shows and things.
But that was the first time I met Taylor, and I was backstage.
And here comes this blonde surfer dude.
He's like, Yo, dude, I live in Paris.
Did I say that?
And I knew right then.
I was like, Oh, we're gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives.
And then we and then every time we went to a festival, and I saw the Alanis Morissette's band was playing, I'd think, Oh my God, that blonde kid is here.
So I'd grab a bunch of beers and I'd find Taylor, and I'd find him backstage, and we just we became so close.
Eventually, you met his name.
Yeah, yeah, he's not the blonde kid from Atlantis anymore.
But then it was funny because I think Atlantis noticed that he and I were becoming really close friends.
Uh huh.
And we played a show with them in France,
and according to Taylor, when they got on their flight to go to China or something, he was sitting next to Atlantis, and she said, "
What are you going to do when Dave asks you to be his drummer?
" And he said, "No, baby, I love you." I would never.
He was our drummer like six months.
But.
でも。
But I thank God for Lannis Morissette because she put that amazing band together and really brought Taylor like up in the world.
Yes, and then you poached.
And then you poached him from her.
Well, I don't.
Love as a drummer myself, I can appreciate a really great drummer.
Okay.
You are not just a drummer.
You're a smoker of meat.
I know you did a big charity event.
Was that this weekend?
That was day before yesterday.
That was the day before yesterday.
You smoked how many pounds of pork?
We cooked about three thousand pounds of pork butts.
Three thousand pounds.
That's a lot.
And when we're done with it, we do it for an organization called Hope United.
And what happens is, once all of that stuff is off the cooker,
then you put them in warming boxes, and all of that stuff is shredded to make sandwiches, and we can feed
four, five, six, ten thousand people with one cook.
That's a lot.
You do a lot of charity stuff, I know that.
And Vin Diesel bid on you coming to cook at his house.
Did.
When is that happening?
I'm not entirely sure.
It's going to be next.
I think it's December.
Okay.
I'm really excited for that.
Are you?
Well, I don't know.
Like, because usually when we do that, we pull up in your driveway.
Uh huh.
And we stay there for about 16 to 20 hours, smoking out the entire neighborhood, and like using your bathroom.
Right.
Well, sure.
Yeah.
うん。
So you're going to be using Vin Diesel's bathroom.
Yeah.
うん。
I can't wait to see him open up and be like, "Yo, dude, I got a, I need a break." How many people will you be cooking for?
Do you know?
That's probably only I don't know a couple hundred.
That's not too.
Oh, that many people.
I don't know.
We'll see.
Okay.
We always make it much bigger.
What if it's just Vin?
That's a nice question.
Bring it in here.
Here's three thousand pounds of me.
Your daughter Violet is has followed Dad into the music industry.
I assume you're you're excited about that.
Oh, she's been.
She's.
I knew she was a musician when she was four years old in her car seat singing along
to Amy Winehouse with perfect pitch and following every tiny little inflection and everything.
Like I knew.
I'm like, oh my God, she has an ear.
She really has an ear.
I mean, she was singing Rehab, which was a little weird, but like, but she was but she was singing it perfectly.
And so she.
So I've known, and she's.
I mean, you know, she grew up coming on the road with us.
Uh huh.
She knows what it's like to be in a stadium.
She knows what it's like to be on a bus.
She knows what it's like to be backstage, and and then she started singing backups for us when she was like twelve years old.
So she would walk out in front of an audience of fifty thousand people, and I'd be nervous.
Sure.
Okay.
Are you ready?
You ready?
She'd be like, whatever.
Really?
Yeah.
うん。
She was like, really.
She was born to do this, and so she made an album of her own a couple years ago, now, year or so ago.
I had nothing to do with it.
Came out in May, I think.
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
And so I, I really had nothing to do with it at all.
Is that hard for you to have nothing to do with it?
No, because you know, I think about it.
I think about when I was young, and both of my parents were musicians, and I mean, I was, I was playing like dissonant, crazy punk rock, screaming punk rock music,
and my father was a classically trained flautist, and my mother sang in like a cappella groups and stuff.
They never discouraged me from listening to the music that I loved to listen to,
but they also never tried to sort of insert themselves into any creative process at all, because
I think they understood like that that's a way to become yourself and find your identity.
And so the last thing in the world I would ever do with Violet would be to like get in there and And try to shape what she's becoming.
So it has to come from the bottom up.
And now, you know, she's out on the road and she's doing the things.
She's playing the pubs and she's playing the clubs and she's losing sleep and she's losing her voice.
And I call her on the road.
I Facetime her almost every day, and I say, like, "How's it going?
" She's like, "Oh, my throat's kind of scratchy.
It kind of hurts." I'm like, "It's fine, man.
Like, go in the shower, stand in there for half an hour, take an Advil, drink some tea." All medical advice.
Pretty much.
Yeah, yeah.
But then, you know, the response is like, "Dad, I don't know if I can do it." I'm like, "Violet, they don't care if your voice is raspy.
Just get up there and do it." And she goes, "They're gonna notice." And I go, "They're not gonna notice." I get up on stage every night and I sound like Lemmy from Motorhead.
They're not gonna notice.
And she goes, "Yeah, but you scream, I sing." (Laughter) And she's not wrong.
You're gonna be screaming from this album for us a little bit later on.
Dave Grohl is here with us.
We'll be right back.
I'm back with Dave Grohl.
This is his album, your favorite choice.
Which song are you gonna do tonight?
Tonight we're gonna do the song "Window." Window.
Window。
Yeah.
And is this the window to the soul?
Windows can mean many, many things.
You know, it's funny this song in particular.
I remember my daughter Harper, who's 17.
She was just learning the bass, and so I thought, like, oh, I'm gonna write a song.
I have a studio in my house.
I'm like, I'm gonna write a song that she was just learning that she can come upstairs and like put a bass line on, like, really simple, right?
And I and then we can jam together.
So I was and her favorite band is the Breeders, and so I'm like, okay, well, I'll do I'll do this thing.
It's kind of like the Breeders, so we did it together.
And then I was listening to the riff, and I'm like, okay, well, that could maybe go on the record,
but the inspiration from behind the song is I don't know if you've ever been in a hotel room
where you're lying there in your skivvies and the curtains are open and all of a sudden here comes the window cleaner guy,
and you're like splayed out with a cheeseburger in your lap watching the news at best, yeah, yeah.
Some guy just like comes by really quick and like, and I started thinking like, oh my God, this guy's job,
like this guy is witnessing people's most intimate moments, and so that's basically kind of what the song is about.
But the window watcher.
We made a video that's based that shows exactly.
Yes, yes.
You um have a song called Child Actor.
Is that a literal um interpretation as well?
No.
いや。
Well, I.
I wrote that song, thinking of how people could sometimes be so performative that they're sort of performing a version of themselves for other people's
acceptance or acknowledgement, right?
So that you're you're looking at others to validate yourself, when really, you know, you have to begin inside.
You have to learn to love yourself and and begin inside yourself to really validate.
That's a song already, though, so you couldn't really do that.
It's the greatest love of all.
Oh, is that what it is?
The love yourself.
Well, then also, it's the greatest love.
Is that what it is?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Who sang that?
Well, that well, the Whitney Houston made it very popular.
George Benson sang it, I think.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
うん。
Did he go?
A little bit.
They got that one.
Yeah, a little bit.
Anyway.
No, but also.
I love that you know that.
You know, not to get off track, but George Benson jokes.
George Benson kicks ass.
First of all, secondly, I love that you don't have that
head snobbery that I think a lot of bands, especially bands from a certain era, will have, where they're like, "Oh, that's crap.
I'm only into this kind of stuff, or whatever." I don't believe in guilty pleasure.
I really don't.
When it comes to music, I listened to I listened to so much music and so many different genres, so many different types of music that I think, like, listen, if you like
Britney Spears' "Toxic," love it.
It's an incredible song.
If you like, I mean, I don't want to shout out a bunch of ridiculous, you know, shout them out.
Yeah, but it's a song like "Child Actor." It's funny when my mother was a high school English teacher, right?
And she was a part of the drama department.
And when I was maybe like ten or nine or ten years old.
The high school was putting on a production of The King and I.
Okay.
And there was there was a there was a part for the prince, I guess.
And she's like, "David, I really want you to try out for the part of the prince in The King and I." And I was like, "Okay." I didn't want.
I love my mom.
She was amazing.
I didn't want to say no.
You were her little prince.
I'm like, okay.
And so they set up this audition thing in the auditorium, and I was terrified.
And I learned "Rocky Raccoon" by the Beatles to sing and play guitar.
And like, my voice was like this.
I was like ten years old, and so I show up the day before the audition.
I'm like, oh my god, I really don't want to do this.
I really don't want to do this.
I was nervous.
My friend Larry Hinkle was there, and he goes, "Dude, what are you doing?
What?
何？
You're gonna for the prince in The King and I?
" I'm like, I don't want to do it.
So I took a pillow.
Put it in my face, and I screamed for like three hours.
So I would blow my voice out, so I lose my voice, and so the next day I go to the audition and I get up on stage.
I'm like, "Hi, I'm Dave Grohl.
I'm sorry I blew my voice, and I am." And the the director was like, "Oh, just just try anyway."
So I played Rocky Raccoon with this messed up voice, and um,
I didn't get the part.
My friend Scott Beller got the part, and I got understudy, and um, that's what child actor is about.
All right.
What song are you gonna do?
Oh, I asked you that question, right?
All right.
Will you do one of those um alleged guilty pleasure songs at some point this week?
Yeah.
うん。
Well, I'll tell you.
I don't know if anyone remembers Jerry Rafferty.
Of course.
Everyone remembers Jerry Rafferty, whether they remember him or not.
Right down the line.
Right down the line.
Baker Street.
He was in Stealers Wheel.
Stuck in the middle with you.
Yeah.
そう。
Baker Street is one of my favorite songs of all time.
It reminds me of being young in the '70s.
Yeah.
うん。
And driving around with my mom in the front seat with the AM radio on, and it is truly one of my favorite songs of all time.
So we'll we'll rock that.
Excellent.
Excellent.
All right.
This is the album of your favorite toy, Gabe Groll.
