We will look at rectal cancer.
It is a cancer that Japanese people are prone to.
The most common is colorectal cancer. It exceeds lung cancer and stomach cancer.
Well, while it has the highest number of diagnoses, the reality is that more people die from other types of cancer.
What is surprising is that the number of colorectal cancer diagnoses in about 50 years
has more than doubled. While there is no scientifically proven definitive cause, the Westernization of diet and the decrease in the amount of vegetables

that has been pointed out.
The large intestine
is a long organ that is generally about 1.5 to 2 meters long in adults.
The whole thing is called the large intestine, and the part near the anus is the rectum; if cancer is found there, it is rectal cancer. It is said that there are almost no initial symptoms.
As it progresses, symptoms include bloody stool, anemia,
and intestinal obstruction, so by the time bloody stool appears, it is already somewhat advanced.
The incidence rate increases after a certain age. You may have heard that 40 is a milestone,
and many people feel that way, but it is by no means rare to
contract it in your 40s. There is also a gender ratio. The risk of contracting colorectal cancer is 1 in 12 for men,
and 1 in 13 for women.
That is the data.
Above all, early detection is important.
The main cause is said to be the importance of removing colorectal polyps before they become cancerous. Well, not all polyps become cancerous, but removing them at an early stage
is the best method, as shown by the numbers. The 5-year survival rate for colorectal cancer by stage
is over 90% with early detection.
On the other hand, if detection is delayed,
it drops below 20%, a difference that is
clearly evident.
Nagano-san, it is said for every disease, but it really shows how important early detection is. Yes, that's true. Actually, I am a cancer survivor myself. It's not colorectal cancer, but breast cancer,
and I am one of the people who was saved by early detection.
I was really surprised when I went for a checkup and was told I had cancer, because just the day before, I had swum 1 kilometer in a pool and was eating normally.
I thought I was the picture of health, but I was told I had cancer without any subjective symptoms at all.
So, I really think it is important to go for regular checkups for early detection.
Regardless of age, it is important to go for a health checkup precisely because you are healthy at an early stage. So, how is the examination performed?
It is a colorectal cancer test.
Well, it is a stool test, first of all.
The government recommends that people over 40 take it once a year. The accuracy
is about 90%, 92.9%. This decreases depending on the stage of progression.
The cost is about
円えん
yen.
For those over a certain age, municipalities may cover the cost. In Japan,
there are some that require two samples, but recently there are more that can be done with one.
And it is said that in Japan, many people do not go for re-examination when they get a positive result, judging that they are fine.
If you get a positive result from this test,
the recommended next step is an endoscopic examination. The examination takes 15
to 30 minutes.
It is about that long.
It is possible to remove early-stage cancer, etc. While this is done for early detection, being able to remove it there means it can prevent cancer,
so it is also a preventive test.
You take a laxative about 5 hours before. The cost is about 30,000 yen. If you have symptoms, it is covered by insurance.
I have done this myself, but now there is an option to be put to sleep with sedation,
so that significantly reduces the burden on the body. The fact that it takes time to take the laxative as preparation might be
the only drawback, if I had to name one.
As shown in the video, the screening rate for colorectal cancer in Japan is
about 40%, meaning about 60% of people
do not go.
Well, reasons like 'I'm healthy so I don't need it' or 'I'm busy' are common, and I imagine many of you watching TV right now might be thinking, 'Oh, I haven't gone either.' So, Ms. Nakamura, in terms of
taking even a small step forward, well, overseas,
for example, in places like the US or Australia that have introduced systems to automatically send out test kits, it's said that the screening rate is around 70%. As for Japan, well,
is there anything we can do, or anything individuals can do? Well, I lived in the US for a long time, and at that time, I heard about the 'Katie Couric effect.'
TV journalist Katie Couric underwent a colonoscopy on television, and because of that, the screening rate for colorectal cancer
increased by about 20%. I think the effect of television is huge. Regarding Ms. Nakamura Mari's story,
Ms. Yuri's story is very unfortunate,
but
if watching this program leads more people to go for screenings, I think it might provide some solace to her, even though she has passed away.
I truly hope you will go for a screening. It really is true.
Please, do consider it.
