貪欲どんよくという
There is the word
言葉ことばがあります
"greed."
貪どんをむさぼると書かきますね
It is written with the character for coveting.
仏教ぶっきょうでは
In Buddhism,
欲よくそのものを否定ひていしているわけではありません
desire itself is not denied.
欲よくがなくなったら人間にんげんは生いきていけないですから
Because if desire were gone, humans could not live.
人間にんげんに限かぎらずあらゆる命いのちは
Not only humans, but all life
みんな欲ほっするが故ゆえに
all move because they desire,
欲よくに従したがって動うごいています
following their desires.
お腹なかが空すいて食たべたい
Hungry and wanting to eat,
体からだが疲つかれて寝ねたい
Tired and wanting to sleep,
お風呂ふろに入はいって
Getting in the bath and
汗あせをすっきり流ながしたい
wanting to wash away sweat refreshingly,
セックスをしたい
Wanting to have sex,
もっともっと
More and more,
これが上達じょうたつしたい
Wanting to improve at this,
もっといいものが欲ほしい
Wanting better things,
快適かいてきな家いえに住すみたい
Wanting to live in a comfortable house,
生いきるためには命いのちが
In order to live, for life to
次つぎの世代せだい次つぎの世代せだいって受うけ継つがれていくためには
be passed on to the next generation and the next,
欲よくが必要ひつようなんです
desire is necessary.
だから欲よくというのは体からだに
So desire is equipped in the body,
命いのちにあらゆる命いのちに備そなわっている
in life, in all life,
生いきるための原動力げんどうりょくです
as the driving force for living.
問題もんだいは欲よくを持もつことではないんです
The problem is not having desire.
欲よくに持もたれること
It is being possessed by desire.
欲ほしいものが手てに入はいらない
When what we want is unattainable,
そうすると私わたしたちは
then we
苦くるしいですね
feel suffering, don't we?
何なんかをじゃあそれを手てに入いれたら
If you get something, then
また今度こんど次つぎが欲ほしくなるんです
you'll want the next thing again
借金しゃっきんしてでも欲ほしくなる
you'll want it even if you go into debt
そこまで行いくと
when it goes that far
むさぼりになり
it becomes craving
そこまで行いくと
when it goes that far
貧ひんになるんです
it becomes poverty
貪欲どんよくの貪どんとは貧まずしいと書かきますよね
The character for greed in greed is written as poor, right?
もっともっともっとって常つねに常つねに増ふえている

これが貧まずしいという状況じょうきょうです

欲よく

あらゆる角度かくどからあらゆるタイミングで

私わたしたちがものを欲ほっするように
so that we desire things
仕掛しかけられている

現代げんだいのマーケティングによって仕掛しかけられているという時代じだいには

貪欲どんよく

そこに

飲のまれてしまうと

欲よくに飲のまれてしまうと

もっと欲ほしいもっと欲ほしいという心こころが常つねに何なにかを渇望かつぼうしているという
a mind of wanting more and more, always craving something
状態じょうたいだけではなくて

経済的けいざいてきにも
economically too
貧ひんに貧まずしく
poor, impoverished
なってしまうんです

さあ、仏教ぶっきょうでは
Now, in Buddhism,
出家しゅっけ者しゃと
renunciants and
在家ざいけ
laypeople
では
well,
比率ひりつも違ちがえば生活せいかつの前提ぜんていも違ちがいます
the proportions differ and the premises of life differ
出家しゅっけ者しゃは
Renunciants
百ひゃくパーセント
one hundred percent
もっぱら
exclusively
他人たにんからの
from others
お布施ふせを受うけて生活せいかつをしている
live receiving alms
その代かわり
In exchange,
自分じぶんが
they themselves
悟さとりを開ひらくという
to attain enlightenment
修行しゅぎょうに励はげむ
devote themselves to practice
一切いっさいの生産せいさん活動かつどうをしないで
without doing any productive activity at all
自分じぶんが
they themselves
やりたいことに励はげむ
devote themselves to what they want to do
そのような生活せいかつをしているので
since they live such a life,
その修行僧しゅぎょうそうが
that practicing monk
趣味しゅみに興きょうじていたり
indulging in one's hobbies,
やるべき修行しゅぎょうを放ほったらかし
neglecting the training one should do,
もっともっとって
wanting more and more,
欲よくにまみれた生活せいかつをしていれば当然とうぜん
if you live a life steeped in desire, of course
信者しんじゃさんたちから
from the followers,
愛想あいそつかされてしまい、そっぽ向むかれてしまいますね
you'll be disliked and turned away from.
だから仏教ぶっきょうの教団きょうだんでは
That's why in Buddhist communities,
禁欲きんよくということが
abstinence
説とかれてきたわけですけれども、在家ざいけの人ひとが趣味しゅみを持もつことまで
has been taught, but Buddhism never denies lay people having hobbies.
決けっして仏教ぶっきょうは否定ひていをしていないんです
Buddhism does not deny it at all.
問題もんだいは
The problem is
欲よくを持もつことではなくて欲よくに飲のまれてしまうこと
not having desires, but being consumed by desire.
なんですね

バイクが欲ほしいと思おもい始はじめたのは小学生しょうがくせいの頃ころです

学生時代がくせいじだいに友達ともだちと一緒いっしょに

お寺てらに遊あそびに来きたんです

それがかっこよくて

姿すがたに憧あこがれて

僕ぼくも絶対ぜったい将来しょうらいバイクに乗のるんだって思おもってました
I thought, I'll definitely ride a motorcycle in the future.

大学だいがく時代じだい
in my university days,
アルバイトをして

バイクを買かって
bought a motorcycle,
バイクで大学だいがくに通学つうがくし
commuted to university by motorcycle,

まあ今いまだから話はなすんですけど

まあ荒あれていた地元じもとの中学校ちゅうがっこう

依頼いらいされたんです
to give a lecture.

歳さい16歳さい17歳さい18歳さい、中学生ちゅうがくせい
16, 17, 18 years old, junior high school students,
高校生こうこうせいの

学生がくせいにとってね
for students, you know,
命いのちの話はなしをしてくれとかお坊ぼうさんの話はなしとか
asking me to talk about life, or a monk's talk,
1時間いちじかん1時間いちじかん半はんの話はなしを
a one-hour, hour-and-a-half talk,
なかなか聞きけないですよね
they can hardly listen to it, right?
なので

その講演こうえんのフックとしてね

私わたしが空手からてをやっているところとかバイクに乗のってるところとか
like me doing karate or riding a bike,
まあ動物どうぶつの赤あかちゃんを抱だっこしているところとか
like holding a baby animal,

中高生ちゅうこうせいが私わたしの話はなしを聞きくためのフックとして

さまざまな免許めんきょや資格しかくを実じつは持もってます

トラックを所有しょゆうしていた
I used to own a truck,
フォークリフトをお寺てらで所有しょゆうしていた
we owned a forklift at the temple,
ユンボを所有しょゆうしていた
I owned a backhoe,
バイクよりも
rather than bikes,
もっと大おおきな乗のり物ものを
even bigger vehicles,
今いまに乗のっていたりします
I ride them even now,
ライダさんの問題もんだいは何なにかって言いったら
What the problem for riders is,
欲よく
desire,
があることではないんですよ
it's not about having it,
暇ひまなことです
it's having free time,
暇ひまになるとネットで次々つぎつぎと商品しょうひんを見みる
When you have free time, you keep looking at products online,
そして
And,
本当ほんとうにそのものが必要ひつようであったり、本当ほんとうにそのものが欲ほしいではなくて
it's not that you really need it, or that you really want it,
刺激しげきを受うけて
stimulated by it,
それを手てに入いれるまでのまた
and until you get it, again,
刺激しげき
stimulation,
それが欲ほしいんです
that's what you want,
趣味しゅみを楽たのしむことと
enjoying a hobby and
買かい物もので心こころの空白くうはくを埋うめることは違ちがいますよね
filling the emptiness in your heart with shopping are different, right?
でもどっかで
But somewhere,
その
that,
ネットサーフィンをしていろんな商品しょうひんを見みて
surfing the net and looking at various products,
そしてそれを次々つぎつぎと買かうということが
and buying them one after another,
暇ひまの潰つぶしに
just to kill time,
なっている、エネルギーの使つかい方かたになっている、時間じかんの使つかい方かたになっている、お金かねの使つかい方かたになっている。それが問題もんだいなんです
it has become a way of using energy, a way of using time, a way of using money. That is the problem
欲ほしいと
wanting something,
思おもう自分じぶんを責せめる必要ひつようはありません
there's no need to blame yourself for it
これだけ
just this,
これだけ
just this,
あらゆる企業きぎょうの天才てんさいたちが私わたしたちの視覚しかくに聴覚ちょうかくに嗅覚きゅうかくに
in today's society where geniuses from all kinds of companies send out messages to our vision, our hearing, our sense of smell,
そして触覚しょっかくに
and to our sense of touch,
これを買かえというメッセージを
messages saying 'buy this',
発信はっしんしてくるという現代げんだいの社会しゃかいにおいて
in this modern society where they keep sending them out,
ついつい
we end up
必要ひつようないものまで
even things we don't need
買かってしまう
buying them
そういう
that kind of
自分じぶんを
self,
自分じぶんの意志いしが弱よわいとか欲よくにまみれてると
that your will is weak or you're full of desire
責せめる必要ひつようありません
there's no need to blame yourself
問題もんだいは
The problem is
暇ひまなんです
that you're idle
よ。暇ひまなときに
Yes. When you're idle,
見みるんです
you look at them
ネットサーフィンするんです。それは欲ほしくなります
you surf the internet. Of course you'll want them
そのときに
at that moment,
私わたしが本当ほんとうに使つかうか本当ほんとうに必要ひつようか
whether I will really use it, whether I really need it,
そのものを本当ほんとうに自分じぶんは使つかうのか
whether I will really use that thing myself,
それとも私わたしがこのものに
or whether I will be
使つかわれるのか
used by that thing,
この広告こうこくに
by this advertisement,
自分じぶんは
whether I myself
はめられてしまうのか
will be trapped by it,
そこを
that point,
ちゃんと自分じぶんで
properly by yourself,
見みる
to see,
冷静れいせいさがない
you lack that calmness,
そこが問題もんだいなんです
that is the problem
さあ、私わたしはバイクに限かぎらず
Now, not limited to motorcycles,
機械きかいとか道具どうぐとかテクノロジーっていうのは
I really like machines and tools and technology,
すごく好すきです
I like them very much,
まあ好すきですと言いうだけではなくて
well, not just to say I like them,
そうしたさまざまな
toward the predecessors who have created and improved such various
道具どうぐや機械きかいを
tools and machines,
生うみ出だし改良かいりょうしてきた先人せんじんたちに敬意けいいを
I have respect for them,
その創意工夫そういくふうに敬意けいいを持もってます
I have respect for their ingenuity,

お寺てらの住職じゅうしょくになってからは
since I became the head priest of a temple,
余計よけいその思おもいが
that feeling has become even
強つよくなってきました
stronger
私わたしのいる福ふく厳げん寺じも
My Fukugonji Temple also,
建物たてものだけではない境内けいだい山林さんりんがあります
has temple grounds and mountain forests, not just buildings,
ですからお寺てらには
so at the temple,
たくさんの木きが生はえている
There are many trees growing
自然環境しぜんかんきょうがある。それひっくるめてお寺てらなんです
The natural environment, all of that together is the temple
例たとえば本堂ほんどうの屋根やねに
For example, on the roof of the main hall
大おおきな
large
大木たいぼくの枝えだが掛かかっている
a large tree's branch is hanging over it
しかもその大木たいぼくがもう枯かれて折おれそうだと
and moreover that large tree is already dead and about to break
まあお寺てらにもソメイヨシノという桜さくらの木きが
well, the temple also has many Somei Yoshino cherry trees
たくさんあります
a lot of them
私わたしの
My
先代せんだい、福ふく厳げん寺じの先代せんだいの
predecessor, the predecessor of Fukugonji temple
住職じゅうしょくの晋山しんざん式しきといって住職じゅうしょくとしてこのお寺てらに
the head priest's shinsan-shiki, the ceremony to welcome him to this temple as head priest
迎むかえ入いれられる儀式ぎしきの時ときに

まあ記念きねんとしてたくさんの桜さくらの木きを

でもそのソメイヨシノの寿命じゅみょうっていうのは60年ねん70年ねんなんです
But the lifespan of those Somei Yoshino cherry trees is 60 or 70 years
今いまそれらが枯かれて
Now they are dying
太ふとい枝えだが
and thick branches
折おれてくるんです
are breaking off
それが人ひとに当あたったり
If those hit people
本堂ほんどうの
or pierce through the main hall's
屋根やねを貫つらぬいたり
roof
壊こわしたり
or destroy it
でもそういう
But for such
大型機械おおがたきかいが入はいれないみたいなところ
places where large machinery can't enter
あるいは高所作業車こうしょさぎょうしゃじゃないと
or huge trees that can't be handled without an aerial work platform
処理しょりできないような大木たいぼくを一本いっぽん処理しょりするといくらかかるか知しってますか
do you know how much it costs to deal with just one tree
一本いっぽん二十はたち万まんとか三十さんじゅう万まんとかするんです
It costs 200,000 or 300,000 yen per tree
お寺てらの境内けいだいの
To manage the temple grounds'
山林さんりんを管理かんりしていこうと思おもうと
mountain forests
それをすべてね
to leave all of that
業者ぎょうしゃさんに
to contractors
お任まかせするっていうわけにはいかないんですよ
we just can't do that
お金かねかかりますから
because it costs money
だから私わたしも

チェーンソーを買かい
bought a chainsaw
ユンボを買かい
bought an excavator
高所作業車こうしょさぎょうしゃの免許めんきょを取とり
got a license for aerial work platforms
そういう必要性ひつようせいから
out of such necessity
バイクから始はじまって
starting from motorcycles
車くるまもそう
cars too
トラックの大型おおがた免許めんきょもそう
a large truck license too
ユンボの免許めんきょもそう
an excavator license too
高所作業車こうしょさぎょうしゃの免許めんきょもそう、フォークリフトの免許めんきょもそう、さまざまな資格しかくを取とって技術ぎじゅつを身みにつけてきました
an aerial work platform license too, a forklift license too, I've obtained various qualifications and learned the skills
でも
But
本当ほんとうにそうやって

小学生しょうがくせいの頃ころに

自分自身じぶんじしんの心身しんしんを整ととのえておかないといけないんですね
you have to keep your own mind and body in good shape
一瞬いっしゅんの判断はんだんミスが命いのちにかかわりますから
A momentary lapse in judgment can cost lives
でまたそういった機械きかいを操作そうさできるっていうことは
And being able to operate such machines
この災害さいがいの多おおい日本にほんでは
in this disaster-prone Japan,
そういった機械きかいを持もっていることとかそういう機械きかいを操作そうさできること
owning such machines or being able to operate them
っていうのが人ひとの役やくに立たつこともあるんです
can sometimes be of help to others
震災しんさいの時ときに
At the time of the earthquake disaster,
人力じんりきじゃなんとかならないですから
human strength alone couldn't handle it
私わたしもそれを被災地ひさいちに行いって
I went to the disaster area myself and
目まの当あたりにしました
saw it with my own eyes
助たすけてって声こえがガレキの下したから聞きこえるのに
You could hear voices crying for help from under the rubble,
誰だれもそれをどけることができないんですよ。その上うえに被かぶってるガレキを
yet no one could remove the debris piled on top
でもユンボがあればできるんです
But with an excavator, you can do it
トラックがあったらできるんです
With a truck, you can do it
車くるまがあったらできる
With a car, you can do it
バイクがあったら車くるまが入はいっていけないところにも入はいっていけるんです。オフロードのバイクとか
With a bike, you can get into places cars can't reach. Like an off-road bike

こうした機械きかいっていうのは
with machines like these,
資格しかくをいくら持もっていても
no matter how many licenses you hold,
いざそういう時ときにだけ
when that moment comes,
その機械きかいに

乗のって操作そうさができるかといったらできないんですね
and operate that machine — you can't
普段ふだんから腕うでを鈍にぶらせないっていうことが大事だいじなんです

次々つぎつぎ買かわなければ新あたらしいものを買かわなかったら満足まんぞくしないとかそこまで行いくとそれはもう趣味しゅみではなくて修業しゅぎょうです
If you can't be satisfied unless you keep buying new things one after another, then it's no longer a hobby, it's ascetic training
それこそが貪欲どんよくです
That itself is greed
だからちゃんとメリハリを持もって
So keep a proper balance
ケジメと規律きりつを持もって遊あそぶ
Play with discipline and self-control
そんな大人おとなの遊あそびを

一ひとつ二ふたつ持もっとく
Have one or two of them
