The truth. Last time, we introduced the surprising side of the hero of the end of the Edo period, Sakamoto Ryoma, but
this time, we will look at the Shinsengumi, popular in the history of the end of the Edo period. Furthermore, the truth of history hidden in the opening of Japan.
We will have Tatsuya Yamamura, who is in charge of historical novels such as the Taiga drama 'Berabo' and 'Yomaden', teach us.
First, the truth of history regarding the Shinsengumi.
The ordinary members of the Shinsengumi were
actually low-paid.
I feel like I've heard they received quite high salaries, is that wrong? Actually, it is different.
The Ikedaya Incident, which made the name of the Shinsengumi famous overnight.
The Ikedaya, where people of the Choshu clan who were planning to set fire to the town of Kyoto had gathered,
was raided by the Shinsengumi, and the history of succeeding in capturing the key members is famous, right?
Actually, for this achievement,
a reward was given by the Shogunate, but according to records,
30 ryo for the commander,
20 ryo for the main officers,
and even 15 ryo was paid to ordinary members without rank,
which was a very cheap reward.
From these records, it was thought until now that the Shinsengumi's salaries were high, but actually, it seems that wasn't the case.
Well, conventionally, it was said that all Shinsengumi members were high earners, but there are solid materials left in a place called the Sanryokai in Kyoto,
and according to that, the ordinary members of the Shinsengumi received a monthly salary of two ryo.
The main job of the Shinsengumi was guarding the town. And when it came to dark nights, it was truly life-threatening.
Considering that they managed with that reward of a monthly salary of 200,000 yen, it feels a little low, but
if you are in the Shinsengumi, you would buy things, wouldn't you? You can't go without buying things.
Thinking about it that way, 200,000 yen seems like it would be tight. In that case, there would be debts or...
Actually, such things were prohibited for the Shinsengumi. The Shinsengumi's
Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct) explicitly prohibits doing things on one's own.
It seems Mr. Yamamura thinks that they were not that troubled in their daily lives.
Wasn't there a time when it wasn't enough?
Actually, for the Shinsengumi,
the rent didn't cost anything,
and the food expenses for every meal didn't cost anything.
Since all of this was covered, if rent and food expenses didn't cost anything, even with two ryo a month,
they could somehow manage.
So two ryo was, in a sense,
something they could spend relatively freely. That's right. It seems they spent a lot on drinking.
By the way, the officers starting with Commander Isami Kondo
were high earners,
it seems.
Next is the truth of history.
Actually, the Shinsengumi uniform was...
There was a Shinsengumi uniform, but
do you know what kind of thing it was? That bluish...
That clothing, right? Yes. It's called Asagi-iro (light blue) of the time, and it's a haori with a white mountain-shaped pattern on the sleeves.
That is the haori.
This was used as the uniform by the Shinsengumi.
When it comes to the Shinsengumi, I think this uniform is what many people imagine.
Yes.
The Shinsengumi's uniform was actually black.
Eh, black? Black?
I had no idea. Does this mean the image of the Shinsengumi changes completely? The truth of history.
That uniform was actually based on the uniform of the Akuro clan.
It was an imitation of it. In the case of the Akuro clan,
on a black background, they had white
mountain-shaped patterns. It is said they wore things like that. At the time, the Akuro clan was considered the god of samurai.
It was decided by Kondo and the others, who were ronin originally aspiring to be samurai,
to follow the Akuro clan.
If they made it by following the Akuro clan, was it well-received?
The upper management thought it would be well-received, but the soldiers didn't like it that much. Yeah. Yeah. That's surprising. Yeah.
Why was this uniform not well-received by the soldiers?
The reason is,
actually, that costume wasn't one that was really used
when the Akuro clan was fighting,
it was later made into a theatrical costume for a play, and that's when the mountain-shaped pattern was first created.
So, it's flashy. Yeah.
Wearing it daily was a bit embarrassing. I've never seen the real thing, but was it that flashy?
The real thing doesn't actually exist. It doesn't exist? No, it doesn't.
Why doesn't it remain? They were active in Kyoto for five years, but they only used that uniform for about the first year.
It became obsolete. It became obsolete, right.
If it remained, I would pay any amount to buy it. Next,
は
is
a new historical truth regarding the Taisei Hokan (Restoration of Imperial Rule).
Actually, the Taisei Hokan was decided
The Taisei Hokan is arguably the biggest event at the end of the Edo period that changed the course of Japanese history, but
the Taisei Hokan was decided by only three people.
Three people. That's very few. That's right. Yes. Well, the proposal for the Taisei Hokan was presented by the Tosa Domain, and Shogun Tokugawa
Yoshinobu
was convinced and decided to resolve to carry out the Taisei Hokan.
The only ones involved in this decision were the Shogun's senior councilors, Katsuhisa Shigeta, Jukichi Wakata, and Naokichi Nagai. Moreover, he only consulted with two of them, and Shogun Yoshinobu decided it almost entirely on his own. One person. Yeah. Alone. Such an important decision. Yes. Yoshinobu
had
confidence in himself. He was a smart person, and he believed he could
lead such things himself.
He had that kind of pride, so
he decided it alone at that time. Pride, huh.
But there were people on the Shogunate side, right?
Was it okay to do it without consulting them? Yeah. Because if he let the Shogunate officials in on it, they might oppose it, and he didn't want that.
Yoshinobu summoned daimyo with over 100,000 koku to Kyoto,
Nijo Castle,
but the daimyo only received that notice two days before the announcement of the Taisei Hokan decision.
Moreover, he only told them it was a matter of national importance and kept the Taisei Hokan a secret.
Even if you just say you'll gather opinions from everyone, there's no place to actually voice opinions in such a setting.
And that is
how the Shogunate
decided it. That's what happened.
One of the major triggers for that Taisei Hokan was Perry's arrival.
I think we learned in history that the Japanese were surprised by the sudden arrival of the Black Ships, but actually,
the Shogunate knew about Perry's arrival in advance.
え
Eh?
Well then,
It didn't just appear suddenly. It wasn't taken by surprise. It wasn't taken by surprise. Oh, did you know about it?
Disturbed from a peaceful slumber by the four steamships, unable to sleep at night.
This is a famous poem about the chaos in Japan and the shogunate's inability to cope when Perry arrived.
It's a teaching, but
actually, there is a story that the shogunate had information in advance. What is the truth?
Information came in advance from the Dutch officials that an American naval envoy was coming.
The shogunate knew in advance.
Moreover, that information included Perry's age
and even the number of crew members, which was very detailed. But in the end, Japan accepted Perry's demands,
opened the country, and signed what are called unequal treaties for Japan, right?
Did they have any countermeasures?
A few years before Perry's arrival, America had come once before.
At that time, they didn't say anything forceful
and left easily. So, when Perry arrived, there was a faint
hope in the shogunate that they might just leave again. So, they misread the situation? Specifically,
from the shogunate's perspective,
Perry's
fleet saying such forceful things was a huge surprise. From the perspective of the top officials,
since they hadn't prepared anything at all, the fact that the black ships came with four
or seven ships was a shock.
In that sense,
both sides were surprised by Perry's arrival,
it can be said that it was an event.
The truth of history is revealed in various ways, and perhaps new truths will be discovered even now.
By the way, actually, regarding the truth,
like this,
the Shinsengumi, there were certain conditions to join.
Now, what are those conditions? Hmm, it seems difficult. Yes. First, loyalty to the shogunate? Oh. Having a sword?
The rules were set so that they could perform their life-risking work properly.
What do you all think it is?
Yeah, I was surprised that there are many facts that are different from the image of the end of the Edo period that I knew.
And one of the conditions for joining the Shinsengumi
was that you had to be single or living alone.
If you were married, it was a rule that your family had to live more than 40 kilometers away from the station.
The reason for this is that it was thought that if the family was nearby, the desire to protect them would hinder the mission.
It really shows that it was a life-risking job, doesn't it?
That was Good Ichioshi.
