Hello everyone, this is Leila from Bitesize Japanese.
How are you?
In this podcast,
it's a podcast where you can study natural Japanese as if you're talking with friends.
This time,
What's September like in Japan?
I'll talk about the theme of...
Have you ever been to Japan in September?
September is actually already autumn.
In Japan,
September, October, and November are autumn,
December, January, and February are winter,
March, April, and May are
spring,
and June, July, and August are summer.
そう
That's right.
So, September is autumn, but
honestly, recent Septembers are
pretty much summer. It's over 30 degrees every day.
なんか
It's like,
if we just get through September, October will be cooler, so let's just hang in there a little longer, that's honestly
the feeling. That's September.
はい
Yes.
だけど
But,
since it's actually autumn,
まあ
well,
even though it's hot,
you can still properly feel the autumn vibe.
It's the season.
So, in this episode,
I'll talk about when you feel autumn in September,
Japanese events in September, how Japanese people spend their time, and I'll include my experiences
and introduce them to you all.
I'm in Australia right now, but
this September,
I'm planning to be in Japan for most of it.
That's right, I'll be taking a plane to Japan soon.
So, I'm a little excited.
はい
Yes.
You know,
in September,
the moment you feel autumn in Japan is
probably the sounds of nature, the sounds of insects.
Japan has distinct seasons, so
there are summer insects
and autumn insects.
あって
And
in summer, as you probably all know,
cicadas are noisy.
Do you know what cicadas are? Have you seen them?
Well, probably about five centimeters long,
it's a flying insect.
セミ
Cicadas
come in many different types.
The noisy ones in July and August are
those cicadas that go 'min'.
They're really
noisy, you know. And since there are cicadas in Japanese trees,
if you have a house near trees, it's truly
so loud it feels like you're going crazy.
で
And
well, for me, even so, you know,
I've lived in Japan for years, so I'm used to it, but
my husband, Jack,
said that when he hears the sound of cicadas, he feels like he's going crazy.
で
And
when September comes, um,
you start to hear a slightly different cicada sound.
It's a cicada called 'Tsukutsukuboushi',
and its cry
sounds like it's saying 'tsukutsukuboushi, tsukutsukuboushi'.
When that happens, every year I feel, 'Ah, autumn is coming.'
で
And
there are also autumn insects that chirp at night.
The most memorable one is
probably the bell cricket.
It goes 'rin-rin', well,
it's hard to describe with words, but
there's an autumn insect called 'suzushi' (bell cricket), and its sound is really nice.
だから
So,
if you're interested, you can search on YouTube for 'Japanese'
'countryside night' or
'suzushi sound' and you'll find
many videos where you can listen to the sound of suzushi for about an hour, so please give it a listen if you like.
In summer, you know,
at night, it's probably frogs.
When I lived in Japan,
I lived in an apartment,
and in front
and behind the house, there were rice paddies.
So, on summer nights, you know,
the sound of
frogs
was so loud that if you opened the window, it was really
so noisy you couldn't sleep,
so I kept the windows closed.
And during the day, it was 'mii-mii-mii-mii', and it was just
truly, truly noisy.
です
It was.
はい
Okay.
Japanese people often feel the seasons through sounds like these.
なんか
You know,
we feel the seasons.
For example, in summer,
the sound of water, etc.,
あと
and also
the sound of wind chimes.
When we hear them, we feel cool.
Do you know what a wind chime is?
Um, I think you've probably all heard of it, but
こう
it's like this:
When the wind blows, wind chimes
っていい
make a nice
sound.
They are things that make a sound, and we place them outside our houses, you know.
はい
Right.
When we hear things like that, oh,
it's summer. Oh,
なんか
we kind of
feel it's nice, you know.
はい
Right.
When September comes,
the sky also starts to look like an autumn sky.
Japan's summer sky, you know,
is called 'nyuudougumo' (cumulonimbus clouds), and it's like
a tremendously large
cloud
that you can see. Nyuudougumo, um,
they're shaped like ice cream, tall and big,
white, and inside the cloud, it's like cream, I don't know, anyway, they're huge
clouds.
Those are summer clouds.
But, when autumn comes,
those big, puffy clouds disappear, and thin
clouds appear.
They become thin clouds.
It's hard to express.
な。そう
Yeah. Right.
Well, even by looking at the sky,
we feel the seasons, you know.
はい
Right.
Well, but September is still hot, and there are also many typhoons, you know.
で
And
well, when I was a child, I was happy that there were many typhoons in September.
When a typhoon comes,
school sometimes gets canceled, you know.
That's right, that's right. And
when I heard a typhoon was coming, I was pretty excited, you know.
Like, 'Oh, maybe school will be canceled?' or something.
で
And
In Japan, power outages are rare, but
A power outage is
when the electricity goes out.
But sometimes, when a typhoon comes, power outages
do occur.
For example, a tree might fall due to the wind,
on the power lines on the road,
a tree falls on the electric wires, and the power lines
break, causing a power outage.
And those kinds of things, you know,
when you're a kid, they're fun, somehow.
Like, a power outage is different from usual.
Like, everyone spends the night using candles,
I have many fun memories like that.
はい
Yes.
で
And,
Oh, another characteristic of September is that
the length of the day
and the length of the night become the same.
Around September
23rd, I think.
It's the autumnal equinox, but
the days were very long in summer,
but from this autumnal equinox, the nights will become longer.
That's right, that's right.
So, honestly, for me,
I feel sad about that.
Because I love the sun.
So, when the time the sun is out becomes shorter,
I feel a bit sad about that.
Mhm, mhm, mhm.
はい
Yes.
What else is there?
Oh, speaking of September,
there's Silver Week.
Have you all heard of Silver Week?
You probably know Golden Week, right?
It's a holiday of about a week
that occurs around the beginning of May.
で
And
in September too,
there's something called Silver Week.
これは
This is
I think there are about three public holidays
that continue.
だから
So,
including the weekend,
you get about five days, or about a week,
of vacation days, so that's called Silver Week.
Many Japanese people travel during this period.
Japan has quite a lot of public holidays, doesn't it?
Every month
I think there are about two public holidays.
And like Golden Week or Silver Week,
there are also cases where public holidays continue for many days,
so it's surprisingly a country with many days off.
はい
Yes.
Everyone, in your own country,
well, when there's a public holiday,
when there is one,
what kind of
public holiday is it?
Do you know?
Actually, I...
with public holidays,
there are many in Japan, but honestly, what kind of public holiday they are,
not at all
I don't know.
Quite a lot of Japanese people,
その
that
don't know what the holiday is for, but are just happy that work is off, so they go on trips, that's pretty much how it is, honestly, yeah.
There are many public holidays.
Also, what else? Something I want to introduce to everyone in this podcast.
I'm just looking at my memo notebook now,
and I'm thinking about what to talk about next.
あ
Oh,
Okay, next, well, since I talked about public holidays,
among those public holidays,
there's 'Autumn Day',
right? As I just mentioned, I'll talk about this Autumn Day.
Well, it's also called the Autumnal Equinox Day,
but
on this day,
in Japan,
the sun
most
east, true east
rises from
and sets in the west, right?
And what's interesting is that Japan is a Buddhist country, right?
And in the Buddhist world,
Buddhas and
あと
also
ancestors, our deceased family members,
live in a different world, right? They live in a different world,
and that world is in the west,
って
it is
thought.
Just as the sun
sets in the west.
Something in the direction the sun sets
Such Buddhas or deities
There is some wonderful world where they reside
That's the way of thinking, isn't it?
So, September is
Well, it's just this autumn day, and the sun sets in the west
Exactly due west
Because it sets
あの
You know,
To meet their ancestors
Many people go to visit graves
Visiting graves means
Well, going to the family grave
Going to the grave, cleaning it, and putting hands together to pray at the grave
That's what's called visiting graves,
Well, for that reason, September
Has many grave visits, you see.
Actually, I also
When I was little
Every September, my whole family used to go to visit graves.
We always went to my
Mother's ancestors'
Grave,
With my mother, father, sister, and my mother's mother
行いって
We went,
Well, honestly, it was a very
Good memory, you see.
We all brought snacks and
Bento boxes and juice, etc.
Rode the train
Went to a temple and then to the grave at that temple,
なんか
It was like
It felt like a picnic.
Do you all have a chance to go to your
Ancestors' graves or anything?
I guess recent young people
Probably more often don't go to visit graves, don't they?
Actually, I also, a long time ago, always went to that
Well, the grave in Osaka with my family,
ああ
Ah,
Since my mother passed away, and my mother's mother also passed away,
To that grave anymore
We stopped going.
So, last year, we decided to
Abolish that grave
And well, we abolished it.
Abolishing a grave is quite difficult,
You know, Japanese graves usually
まあ
Well,
Have land, and on top of that
There's a stone standing, you see.
And under that stone,
the bones of our ancestors
are there,
just a little bit of bone, you know,
well, in a bag or
a container, just a small amount of bone that you can really hold in your hand.
So, to have that
removed, tidied up, or thrown away
was very difficult,
and it cost a lot of money.
うん
Yeah.
I wonder if that's what it cost.
で
And
the stone used for that grave,
as expected,
well, it's just a stone,
but since the ancestors' names are properly written on it,
まあ
well,
you can't just easily throw it away, right?
なので
So,
と
and
that temple's
の
monk,
a monk who works for the Buddha and such, we had him
come and somehow
石いし
from the stone
that is inside,
our ancestors'
not exactly souls, but their feelings or something, removed from the stone.
And then we had someone from a stone company
take that stone away.
It cost 300,000 yen for something like that. Well, it was quite a hassle, you know.
Yeah. From here, I'll introduce another event, probably the most famous one in September.
I'll introduce Otsukimi (moon viewing).
Everyone has surely heard of Ohanami (cherry blossom viewing), right?
Ohanami is, um,
in April,
going to see the cherry blossom trees.
で
And
Otsukimi in September is an event to view the moon.
Sorry, my dog is crying. Yes.
There are two dogs in the house I live in now.
Both are named Border Collie, which is a dog breed.
And usually, they don't bark at all and are extremely smart dogs,
あの
but
they bark a lot when people pass in front of the house.
So, they're very good
watchdogs, but a watchdog is someone who protects the house.
We call a dog that protects us a guard dog, but
Yes, well, sorry for being a bit noisy.
Yes, and then O-tsukimi (moon viewing).
O-tsukimi is
in a year,
the most beautiful
moon
a viewing event, and
well, in the past,
probably that autumn
was the season for harvesting various vegetables and rice, so people would give thanks to such gods,
or well,
pray for a bountiful harvest of vegetables.
ような
such a
meaning it must have had, but
well, people nowadays just
look at the beautiful moon.
だけの
only
it has become an event, hasn't it?
で
And
honestly, I
O-tsukimi
properly
have never celebrated it.
Well, on the day of O-tsukimi,
at night,
I open the window and say, 'Wow, the moon is beautiful! Look, Dad!' or something like that. It's like, 'Look at the moon and it's over,' that kind of feeling.
Well, honestly, I think most Japanese people feel that way now.
で
And
as expected, recently,
I feel that McDonald's Tsukimi Burger has become more famous than O-tsukimi itself.
Well, McDonald's in Japan
sells something called Tsukimi Burger when September comes.
And the Tsukimi Burger is a regular hamburger, but
inside,
I wonder if there's a fried egg?
You know what a fried egg is, right? It's shaped like an eyeball, an eye.
a fried egg.
Well, if you fry an egg as is in a frying pan,
in the middle of the white egg, there's a yellow
round
part,
right?
Since that's shaped like an eye, we call it 'medama-yaki' (fried egg, literally 'eyeball-fried').
Well, honestly, a fried egg
doesn't it look like the moon?
It does, doesn't it?
So, McDonald's sells a hamburger with such an egg as a Tsukimi Burger.
として
as
they sell it.
So, well, September is
The advertisements for this Tsukimi Burger on TV and YouTube
are broadcast a lot.
はい
Yes.
In your countries,
the patterns on the moon
what are they said to look like?
In Japan, the patterns on the moon are
said to look like a rabbit pounding mochi, making mochi.
That's right, that's right, that's right.
Probably, depending on various cultures and countries,
the way the moon's patterns look is different, so if you don't mind, please tell me what they look like in your country.
で
And
Actually, I learned this yesterday,
あの
um,
in Australia,
the patterns on the moon
are said to appear opposite, flipped over.
Upside down,
it seems to look.
で
And
Yesterday,
when I looked at the moon at night, I thought, 'That's certainly true.'
It's interesting, isn't it? Right, right. So probably the patterns on the moon visible from where you live
will be a little different, won't they?
I thought it was interesting.
And also, one more thing, I was surprised to learn this recently too,
あの
um,
in Australia and Japan,
the direction of the sun's light
is different.
In Japan, the sun rises from the east,
passes through the south, and sets in the west,
but in Australia, the sun rises from the east,
passes through the north, and sets in the west, doesn't it?
This was also the opposite of Japan.
This too, um,
I really just noticed it recently.
Surprising!
Because in Japan,
こう
like this,
when you talk about a good house,
a south-facing
house is already considered as a matter of course,
because I had been thinking that way.
When you come to Australia,
if you want more light inside your house,
a north-facing
house is what you need to buy, isn't it?
That's right, because the sun passes through the north.
This is also something that I thought was interesting because it's the opposite of the Japanese sensibility.
I thought it was interesting because it's the opposite.
はい
Yes.
Well, the topic changed a bit, but yes, yes, moon viewing.
If you like, everyone, this September moon
should be beautiful, so please enjoy watching it.
はい
Yes.
Well, it's already September, so
2026 is also
almost over. September, October, November, December.
So, in another four months,
it will end.
Everyone, how is 2026
so far?
どんな
What kind of
year is it?
For me, well,
other than moving to Australia, honestly,
honestly,
nothing much happened.
Did I study English? Did I work hard?
Other than that, it's been completely
like every day is the same.
うん
Hmm.
I didn't
travel a lot either.
うん
Hmm.
Well, but it's a
peaceful
year, so far.
で
And
studying English really takes time,
ね
you know.
It's a bit tough,
but it's been a slow-paced
year.
はい
Yes.
How is 2026 for everyone?
How is it?
Yes, only four months left. If you haven't achieved your goals for this year yet,
if you're thinking that, it might be a good idea to try to achieve your goals quickly in the last four months.
まあ
Well,
it might be good to try to achieve your goals quickly.
はい
Yes.
Well, that's about it for today, I guess. I talked about various things about Japan in September.
I had a chat.
Thank you all very much for listening until the very end.
Well then,
