Today I'd like to talk about how to use desu/masu and ~n desu.
私わたし普段ふだんは日本語にっぽんごを教おしえているんですけど、

丁寧ていねいに話はなしたいけれど自然しぜんに話はなせません。
I want to speak politely, but I can't speak naturally.
この二ふたつです。
These two things.
ね、まあちょっと正直しょうじきに言ゆうと語尾ごびが難むずかしいっていう部分ぶぶんは最初さいしょは私わたしもよくわからなかったんです。
Well, to be honest, at first I didn't really understand the part about sentence endings being difficult.
何なにに困こまってるんだっていうことが。

でも、いろんな学生がくせいさんと話はなしていると、

文ぶんの終おわり方かたでつまずいている人ひとが本当ほんとうに多おおいなと感かんじるようになりました。
I've come to feel that there are really a lot of people who stumble on how to end sentences.
なので、今日きょうはこの二ふたつのことを話はなしていきたいと思おもいます。
So today, I'd like to talk about these two things.
一ひとつ目めは正ただしく丁寧ていねいに話はなす方法ほうほう、
The first is how to speak correctly and politely,
二ふたつ目めは丁寧ていねいなままもっと自然しぜんに話はなす方法ほうほう。
and the second is how to speak more naturally while staying polite.
この二ふたつ目めの方ほうが特とくに今日きょうのポイントになっていくのかなと思おもいます。
I think this second one will be the main point today.
そしてね、今週こんしゅうは日本にほん続つづけて日本語にっぽんごをもっともっと自然しぜんに話はなすためのコツっていうのを紹介しょうかいしていきたいと思おもいます。

じゃあ、一ひとつ目めからです・ますの話はなしです。
So, first, let's talk about desu and masu.
これね、あの私わたしの学生がくせいさんにも実際じっさいによくある間違まちがいなんです。
This is actually a mistake my students often make.
例たとえばこういう言いい方かたです。
For example, saying things like this.
楽たのしかったます。
Tanoshikatta masu.
うん、これね、気持きもちはすごくわかるんですよ。
Yeah, I really understand how you feel.
丁寧ていねいに話はなそうとしているんですよね。
You're trying to speak politely, right?
あとは食たべたいます、行いきたいますとか、勉強べんきょうしますでした。
Also, things like tabetaimasu, ikitaimasu, or benkyou shimasu deshita.
こんなのも正直しょうじきよく間違まちがえている部分ぶぶんの一ひとつです。
Honestly, these are also some of the common mistakes.
で、これ全部ぜんぶ同おなじ理由りゆうで間違まちがえていると思おもうんです。
And I think they're all wrong for the same reason.
一体いったいどこにですを使つかってどこにますを使つかったらいいのか分わからなくなっちゃうんだと思おもいます。
I think people get confused about where to use desu and where to use masu.
ちなみに正ただしくは楽たのしかったですですね。
By the way, the correct form is tanoshikatta desu.
で何々なになにたいの後あともですをつけていきます。
And after ~tai, we also add desu.
食たべたいです、行いきたいです。
Tabetai desu, ikitai desu.
そして勉強べんきょうしますでしたは勉強べんきょうしましたと言いえばいいですね。
And instead of benkyou shimasu deshita, you should just say benkyou shimashita.
多分たぶんもうここをマスターしている人ひとたちは面白おもしろくなっちゃって笑わらって聞きいている方ほうも今いまいるかと思おもうんですけどね。
Those of you who have already mastered this might be laughing because it's funny,
でも日本語にっぽんごが上手じょうずな方ほうでも実際じっさいに話はなしてみるとごちゃごちゃしてきてしまう方ほう結構けっこう多おおいんです。
but even people who are good at Japanese often get mixed up when they actually speak.
で私わたしはこの間違まちがい方ほうはすごくいいと思おもっています。
And I think this way of making mistakes is really good.
なんでかっていうと。
Why is that?
自分じぶんで日本語にっぽんごを丁寧ていねいに話はなそうとしているからこそ起おきる間違まちがいなんですねこれは。
Because these are mistakes that happen precisely because you're trying to speak Japanese politely on your own.
だからここだけをちゃんと整理せいりしておけば治なおります。
So if you just sort out this one point, you'll fix it.
でこういう時とき私わたしが学生がくせいさんに言ゆうことがあります。
When this happens, there's something I always tell my students.
基本的きほんてきに動詞どうしはます。
Basically, verbs take masu.
それ以外いがいはですで終おわると思おもっておくと楽らくですよって。
It's easier if you think everything else ends with desu.
動詞どうしはます。
Verbs take masu.
食たべるは食たべます。
Taberu becomes tabemasu.
じゃ行いくは行いきますね。
Iku becomes ikimasu.
でそれ以外いがいはです。
And everything else takes desu.
い形容詞けいようしこれはなになにいで終おわる言葉ことばですね。
I-adjectives — these are words ending in -i.
楽たのしいとかは楽たのしいです。
It's fun, it is fun.
な形容詞けいようしは静しずかとか便利べんりみたいな言葉ことばです。
Na-adjectives are words like quiet or convenient.
静しずかだが静しずかです。
Shizuka da becomes shizuka desu.
あと名詞めいしこれは学生がくせいだが学生がくせいですになりますね。
And nouns, kore wa gakusei da becomes gakusei desu.
うん。
Yeah.
でこれ過去形かこけいの時ときも同おなじ考かんがえ方かたです。
And the same way of thinking applies for the past tense.
動詞どうしは食たべました。
For verbs, tabemashita.
い形容詞けいようしは楽たのしかったです。
For i-adjectives, tanoshikatta desu.
な形容詞けいようしと名詞めいしは静しずかでした。
For na-adjectives and nouns, shizuka deshita.
学生がくせいでした。
Gakusei deshita.
でさっき食たべたいです行いきたいですって言いいましたよね。
Earlier I said things like want to eat, want to go, right?
あれねこの何々なになにたいがい形容詞けいようしと同おなじ形かたちになるからなんです。
That's because the -tai form conjugates just like an i-adjective.
楽たのしいが楽たのしいですになるのと同おなじ仲間なかまだともとわかりやすいかなと思おもいます。
It might be easier to understand if you think of it as in the same group as tanoshii becoming tanoshii desu.
でさっきの楽たのしかったます。
And about the tanoshikatta masu from earlier.
これね、楽たのしかったっていうのが楽たのしいの過去形かこけいなので、楽たのしかったですですね。
Well, tanoshikatta is the past form of tanoshii, so it's tanoshikatta desu.
ね、勉強べんきょうしますでしたの方ほうはますとでしたが両方りょうほうついちゃってるので勉強べんきょうしました。
And in the benkyou shimasu deshita case, both masu and deshita are attached, so it's benkyou shimashita.
これだけでもう過去かこになってるんですね。
That alone already makes it past tense.
うん。
Yeah.
ああそうだな、これはまあでも覚おぼえ方かたなので完璧かんぺきなルールじゃないです。
Ah, right, this is just a way to remember it, so it's not a perfect rule.
基本きほんを覚おぼえるための簡単かんたんな考かんがえ方かたです。
It's a simple way of thinking to learn the basics.
で、実じつはここに面白おもしろいところがあるんですね。
And actually, there's something interesting here.
さっき動詞どうしはますって言いいましたよね。
I said earlier that verbs take masu, right?
でもこれ動詞どうしが入はいっていてもですで終おわる文ぶんがあるんです。
But there are sentences that contain a verb yet end with desu.
例たとえばこれ映画えいがを見みたんです。
For example, eiga o mita n desu.
これね、見みたが入はいっていますよね。
This has mita in it, right?
動詞どうしです。
It's a verb.
でも最後さいごはですで終おわっています。
But it ends with desu at the end.
これはちゃんと丁寧ていねいな文ぶんなんですね。
This is still properly a polite sentence.
なので動詞どうしが入はいっている文ぶんは必かならずますで終おわるかっていうと違ちがうんです。
So it's not true that a sentence with a verb must always end with masu.
で今日きょうの本題ほんだいはここなんですよ。
And today's main topic is right here.
この何々なになにです。
This nani-nani n desu.
これが私わたしが今日きょう一番いちばん話はなしたいことです。
This is what I most want to talk about today.
なんでこの話はなしをしようと思おもったのか。
Why I decided to talk about this.
私わたしね学生がくせいさんに言いわれたことがあるんです。
A student once said something to me.
普段ふだんから無意識むいしきに何々なになにんです、何々なになにんですか、何々なになにんですよを
Apparently I often unconsciously use nani-nani n desu, nani-nani n desu ka, nani-nani n desu yo
よく使つかってるみたいなんですね。
in my everyday speech.
でも自分じぶんでは全まったく気きづいていなかったんです。
But I hadn't noticed it at all myself.
そしたらあるとき学生がくせいさんが私わたしに先生せんせいはどうして何々なになにんですをよく使つかうんですか。
Then one time a student asked me, Sensei, why do you use nani-nani n desu so often?
それがもっと自然しぜんなんですか。
Is that more natural?
と聞きかれました。
That's what I was asked.
その時とき初はじめてね自分じぶんの話はなし方かたに気きづいたんですね。
That was the first time I noticed my own way of speaking.
え、私わたしそんなによく使つかってるのって思おもいました。
I thought, huh, do I really use it that much?
でその時とき私わたしは普通ふつうにえそうですか。
And at that time I just replied normally, oh really?
私わたしそんなに使つかってますかってそのまま返かえしました。
I said back just like that, do I really use it that much?
本当ほんとうにね全然ぜんぜん気きづいていなかったんですね。
I truly hadn't noticed it at all.
でもそのことを言いってもらってから自分じぶんの話はなし方かたを振ふり返かえってみると確たしかに使つかっているんですよね。
But after being told that, when I reflected on my own speech, I certainly do use it.
何々なになにんですとか何々なになにんですよとかね。
Things like nani-nani n desu or nani-nani n desu yo.
でその後ご考かんがえたら
And after that I thought about it,
初級しょきゅうの授業じゅぎょうの時ときは
In beginner-level classes,
この文法ぶんぽうだと伝つたわらないことがあるので使つかいませんがでも普通ふつうに何なにも考かんがえないで日本語にっぽんごを話はなすとき
I don't use it because it won't get across with that grammar, but when I just speak Japanese without thinking}
何々なになにんですっていうのをよく使つかっているなって思おもいました。
I noticed that you often use this "...n desu" expression.

逆ぎゃくに学生がくせいさんの方ほうから何々なになにんですを使つかって話はなしをしてくれているときの方ほうが
On the contrary, when students themselves talk using "...n desu,"
もっと自然しぜんに会話かいわをしている気きがします。
I feel like we're having a more natural conversation.
なのでね今日きょうはこの話はなしをしているんですよ。
So that's why I'm talking about this today.
で。
And.
ちょっとこれも面白おもしろいなと思おもったのが、日本人にほんじんは何なにも考かんがえないで意識いしきせずに使つかっている。
What I found interesting is that Japanese people use it without thinking, unconsciously.
でも日本語にっぽんごを勉強べんきょうしている人ひとにはなんか不思議ふしぎに感かんじる言いい方かたがある。
But for people studying Japanese, it feels like a strange way of saying things.
で、
And,
だからこそ皆みなさんは逆ぎゃくにこの文法ぶんぽうを意識いしきして使つかえば日本人にほんじんっぽく話はなせちゃうっていうことなんですね。
So that's why, on the contrary, if you consciously use this grammar, you can sound like a Japanese person.
でもでもでも場面ばめんに合あった使つかい方かたができればなんです。
But only if you can use it appropriately for the situation.
今日きょうはそれもね後半こうはんにちゃんと話はなしていきたいと思おもいます。
Today I want to talk about that properly in the second half.
じゃあ、この何々なになにんですって一体いったい何なんなのかっていう話はなしをしますね。
So, let me explain what exactly this "...n desu" is.
まず形かたちから見みていきましょう。
First, let's look at the form.
何々なになにんですの前まえには普通ふつう形けいがきます。
Before "...n desu" comes the plain form.
普通ふつう形けいっていうのはです・ますを使つかわない形かたちですね。
The plain form means the form without desu/masu.
見みただと見みたんです。
For "mita", it becomes "mitan desu."
行いくだと行いくんです。
For "iku", it becomes "ikun desu."
面白おもしろいだと面白おもしろいんです。
For "omoshiroi", it becomes "omoshiroin desu."
これそのままんですだけつければオッケーです。
You can just add "n desu" as is and that's fine.
でもここが落おとし穴あななんです。
But this is the tricky part.
な形容詞けいようしとか名詞めいしの時ときはなが入はいるんです。
With na-adjectives and nouns, a "na" goes in.
静しずかだと静しずかなんです。
For "shizuka", it's "shizuka nan desu."
便利べんりだと便利べんりなんです。
For "benri", it's "benri nan desu."
学生がくせいだと学生がくせいなんです。
For "gakusei", it's "gakusei nan desu."
静しずかんですっていうふうに言いう人ひとが多おおいんですけどね。
Many people say it like "shizukan desu," you know.
静しずかなんですが正解せいかいなんです。
But "shizuka nan desu" is correct.
ここはとってもとっても間違まちがいやすいところです。
This is a really, really easy place to make a mistake.
あとね一ひとつだけ補足ほそくですが、こう
And just one extra note, like this,
静しずかなんです、学生がくせいなんですみたいに今いまのことを肯定こうていする形かたちで
in affirmative present forms like "shizuka nan desu" or "gakusei nan desu,"
はなが入はいるんです。
a "na" goes in.
でも過去かこになると静しずかだった、静しずかだったんです、
But in the past it becomes "shizuka datta," "shizuka datta n desu,"
学生がくせいだった、学生がくせいだったんです。
"gakusei datta," "gakusei datta n desu."
なじゃなくてだったが入はいっていますね。
Not "na," but "datta" goes in, right.
まあでも今日きょうはねそこまで覚おぼえなくて大丈夫だいじょうぶです。
Well, you don't need to memorize that much today, it's okay.
まずは静しずかなんです、学生がくせいなんですこの形かたちが出でてくれば十分じゅうぶんだと思おもいます。
For now, if you can produce forms like "shizuka nan desu" and "gakusei nan desu," that's enough.
うん、意味いみの方ほうなんですけども、なになにんですは
Yeah, as for the meaning, "...n desu" is
事情じじょうや背景はいけいを説明せつめいするときによく使つかいます。
often used when explaining circumstances or background.
あとは相手あいてにこの状況じょうきょうを分わかってもらいたいときですね。
Also when you want the other person to understand this situation.
あと、これ、あの、理由りゆうを聞きかれてそれに答こたえるときにもよく使つかうんですよ。
Also, you often use it when you're asked for a reason and answer it.
例たとえば、どうして日本語にっぽんごを勉強べんきょうしているんですかって聞きかれたら、あ、私わたしアニメが好すきなんです。
For example, if you're asked "Why are you studying Japanese?" you'd say, "Ah, I like anime."
ほら、好すきなんです。
See, "suki nan desu."
ここでもね、見みてください。
Look here too.
好すきはな形容詞けいようしなのでちゃんとなが入はいっていますね。
"Suki" is a na-adjective, so it properly includes "na."
じゃあもう一ひとつ、どうして遅おくれたんですか。
Here's another one: "Why were you late?"
この質問しつもんに対たいして、あ、電車でんしゃが止とまってたんです。
To this question: "Ah, the train had stopped."
これ、理由りゆうを説明せつめいしているんですね。
This is explaining the reason.
だからなになにんですが合あうんです。
That's why "...n desu" fits.
で、なになにんですよの方ほうはいつ使つかうのかっていうと、相手あいてに情報じょうほうを伝つたえたいとき、
So, when do you use "...n desu yo"? It's when you want to convey information to the other person,
あとは聞きいてほしい気持きもちが入はいるときに使つかえます。
and when there's a feeling of wanting them to listen.
ちなみにあのこの最後さいごのよはですね、
By the way, this final 'yo' here,
あのこれは終助詞しゅうじょしっていうものですが、まあ難むずかしい言葉ことばですから覚おぼえなくて全然ぜんぜん大丈夫だいじょうぶです。
well, this is what we call a sentence-ending particle, but it's a difficult term so you don't need to memorize it at all.
ああこんな風ふうに言ゆうんだなぐらいで。
just think, oh, so that's how you say it.
でね、ここ、次つぎは大事だいじなところなんですけども、
And, this next part is important,
よがついたから普通ふつう形けいになるわけじゃないです。
just because 'yo' is added doesn't mean it becomes the plain form.
結構けっこうねここ勘違かんちがいされる方ほうが多おおいんですけど。
Quite a few people misunderstand this.
何々なになにんですよもちゃんと丁寧ていねいな話はなし方かたです。
'N desu yo' is also properly polite speech.
あとこれも言いっておきたいんですが、
And I want to mention this too,
何々なになにんですっていうのは尊敬語そんけいごとか謙譲語けんじょうごとはちょっと違ちがって
'N desu' is a bit different from honorific or humble language,
丁寧ていねいに事情じじょうを説明せつめいするときに使つかえる表現ひょうげんなんです。
it's an expression you can use when politely explaining circumstances.
例たとえば、実じつは昨日きのう体調たいちょうが悪わるかったんです。
For example, actually I wasn't feeling well yesterday.
これだと自分じぶんより上うえの上司じょうしの人ひととかにも使つかえます。
You can use this even with a boss who is above you.
ただ、
However,
かしこまった場面ばめん
in formal situations
っていうのではもっと適切てきせつな言いい方かたがあることもありますから、そこは場面ばめんを見みて選えらんでほしいです。
there are sometimes more appropriate ways to say it, so please choose based on the situation.
じゃあ実際じっさいに比くらべてみますね。
Let's actually compare them.
同おなじことを三みつの言いい方かたで言いってみます。
I'll say the same thing in three different ways.
一ひとつ目め。
First one.
昨日きのう映画えいがを見みました。
I watched a movie yesterday.
二ふたつ目め、昨日きのう映画えいがを見みたんです。
Second, I watched a movie yesterday, you see.
三みつ目め、実じつは昨日きのう映画えいがを見みたんですよ。
Third, actually, I watched a movie yesterday, you know.
どうですか？
How about that?
三みつとも文法的ぶんぽうてきには正ただしいです。
All three are grammatically correct.
でも伝つたわる感かんじが違ちがうんですよね。
But the feeling they convey is different.
一ひとつ目め、昨日きのう映画えいがを見みました。
First one, I watched a movie yesterday.
これは出来事できごとをシンプルに伝つたえている感かんじです。
This feels like simply reporting an event.
何なにをしましたかって聞きかれて答こたえるならこれが一番いちばん自然しぜんだと思おもいます。
If you're asked what you did, I think this is the most natural answer.
二ふたつ目め、昨日きのう映画えいがを見みたんです。
Second, I watched a movie yesterday, you see.
これはなんか説明せつめいがついてくる感かんじがするんですよね。
This feels like an explanation is coming with it.
例たとえば、昨日きのう映画えいがを見みたんです。
For example, I watched a movie yesterday.
それで今日きょうは寝不足ねぶそくで。
So today I'm sleep-deprived.
みたいな感かんじで事情じじょうを説明せつめいするときに合あいます。
It fits when explaining circumstances like that.
で三みつ目め、実じつは昨日きのう映画えいがを見みたんですよ。
And the third one, actually, I watched a movie yesterday, you know.
でこれはなんか聞きいてほしい感かんじが入はいっていますよね。
This has a feeling of wanting to be heard, doesn't it?
で聞きいてよっていうこういう気持きもちです。
It's this feeling of like, listen to me.
つまりなんかどれが正ただしいかとかじゃなくて何なにを伝つたえたいのかっていうもので選えらぶものが
In other words, it's not about which one is correct, but what you want to convey determines
変かわってきます。
which one you choose.

Okay,
さっきはニュアンスの違ちがいを見みましたけど今度こんどは間違まちがっている日本語にっぽんごと

友達ともだちと映画えいがに行いった話はなしで行いきますね。
We'll go with a story about going to a movie with a friend.
じゃまずパターンA。
First, Pattern A.
昨日きのう友達ともだちに会あったです。
I met my friend yesterday desu.
映画えいがを見みたます。
I watched a movie masu.
楽たのしかったます。
It was fun masu.
はいね。
Yes.
今いま多分たぶんえええってなった人ひともいるのかなと思おもいます。
I think some of you probably went, huh? just now.
これね文法ぶんぽうが間違まちがっていますよね。
This has incorrect grammar, right?
じゃあどこが間違まちがっているかというと一ひとつ目め会あったです。
So where it's wrong, first, met desu.
ここは会あいましたですね。
This should be met, right.
動詞どうしですから。
Because it's a verb.
次つぎ見みたます。
Next, I looked.
ここも見みました。
I looked here too.
ますは使つかわないですよ。
We don't use 'masu'.
そして次つぎ三みつ目め楽たのしかったます。
And next, the third one, was fun-masu.
これは楽たのしかったです。
This is 'was fun'.
楽たのしいはい形容詞けいようしなのでね。
'Tanoshii' is an adjective, you see.
じゃあパターンBに行いきます。
Well then, let's move on to Pattern B.
昨日きのう友達ともだちに会あいました。
I met my friend yesterday.
そして映画えいがを見みました。
And I watched a movie.
とても楽たのしかったです。
It was really fun.
これ全部ぜんぶ正ただしいです。
All of this is correct.
きれいな丁寧ていねいな日本語にっぽんごですよね。
It's all clean, polite Japanese, right?
はい。
Yes.
ね、ここが大事だいじですよ。
See, this is the important part.
パターンBは何なんにも間違まちがっていません。
There's nothing wrong with Pattern B.
文法的ぶんぽうてきにも正ただしいし、場面ばめんによってはこれが一番いちばん自然しぜんです。
It's grammatically correct, and depending on the situation, this is the most natural.
初はじめて会あった人ひとに話はなすときとか、仕事しごとのときとか。
Like when talking to someone you've just met, or at work.
ね、パターンC。
Okay, Pattern C.
昨日きのう友達ともだちと映画えいがを見みに行いったんですけど、すごく面白おもしろかったんですよ。
I went to see a movie with my friend yesterday, and it was really interesting.
どうですか。
How does that sound?
なんかパターンCはドラマとかでよく聞きいた気きがしませんか。
Don't you feel like you've often heard Pattern C in dramas or something?
これね。
This one.
行いったんですけど、面白おもしろかったんですよ。
Went, but... / It was interesting.
両方りょうほうになんですが入はいってるんですね。
Both have 'n desu' in them.
で、行いったも面白おもしろかったも普通ふつう形けいですね。
And both 'went' and 'was interesting' are in plain form.
でも、んですけどとか、んですよがついているので、丁寧ていねいな話はなし方かたになっているんです。

文ぶんの途中とちゅうに普通ふつう形けいが入はいっていても、文ぶん自体じたいが普通体ふつうたいになるわけじゃないんですね。
Even if plain form appears in the middle of a sentence, the sentence itself doesn't become plain style.
でも、パターンCもどんな場面ばめんでも自然しぜんってわけじゃないんですよ。
But Pattern C isn't natural in every situation either.
仕事しごとの報告ほうこくでこの話はなし方かたをすると、ちょっと砕くだけすぎに聞きこえるかもしれません。
If you talk like this in a work report, it might sound a bit too casual.
なので、皆みなさんの目標もくひょうは、まずはAとBをできるようにする。
So your goal is, first, to be able to do A and B.
そして、今度こんどはBとCを場面ばめんで使つかい分わけれるようになる。
And then, to be able to use B and C differently depending on the situation.
これだと思おもいます。
I think that's it.
で今日きょうは何々なになにんですの話はなしをしていますけども、
And today we're talking about 'naninani n desu', but
何々なになにんですを使つかえば自然しぜんになるかっていうとそうじゃないです。
Just using 'naninani n desu' doesn't make it natural.
例たとえば自己紹介じこしょうかいの時とき、あはじめましてスズカです。
For example, when introducing yourself, 'Nice to meet you, I'm Suzuka.'
これが自然しぜんですよね。
That's natural, right?
でも
But
はじめましてスズカなんですっていうとおおなんかね変へんなんですよ。
If you say 'Nice to meet you, I'm Suzuka-n desu,' it sounds kind of strange.
となんかあったんですかっていうね感かんじになってしまいますね。
It ends up sounding like 'Did something happen?'
でも一ひとつ会議かいぎは三時さんじからです。
Also, 'The meeting is from three o'clock.'
これはただの連絡れんらくですね。
This is just a notification.
でも会議かいぎは三時さんじからなんですっていうとなんか事情じじょうがある感かんじがしてきます。
But if you say 'The meeting is from three-n desu,' it feels like there's some circumstance.
うん、三時さんじからなんです。
Yeah, 'It's from three-n desu.'
だからお昼ひるは早はやめに食たべないとみたいなこんな感かんじ。
So like, 'I have to eat lunch early' or something like that.
つまり何々なになにんですは説明せつめいすることがあるときに合あう形かたちなんですね。
In other words, 'naninani n desu' fits when you have something to explain.
なので特とくに説明せつめいする必要ひつようがない場面ばめんで
So especially in situations where you don't need to explain anything,
無理むりに何々なになにんですを使つかうとちょっと不自然ふしぜんに聞きこえてしまうこともあります。
If you force yourself to use 'naninani n desu,' it can sometimes sound unnatural.
じゃあね、私わたしはどう考かんがえればいいのっていうと相手あいてが何なにを聞きいているか
So, if you're wondering how should I think about it, it's what the other person is asking.
説明せつめいする必要ひつようがあるか
Whether you need to explain something
初はじめて伝つたえる情報じょうほうかこのあたりで変かわります。
or whether it's information you're conveying for the first time — it changes around here.
何々なになにますで言いい切きる方ほうがいい場面ばめんも結構けっこうたくさんあります。
There are quite a lot of situations where it's better to state it flatly with nan-nani-masu.
質問しつもんに答こたえるときとか事実じじつを伝つたえるとき、報告ほうこくするとき、
When answering a question, conveying a fact, or reporting,
シンプルに言いい切きった方ほうが伝つたわります。
It's clearer if you just state it simply.
例たとえば何時なんじに着つきますかって聞きかれて三時さんじに着つきます。
For example, if you're asked what time you'll arrive, "I'll arrive at three."
これでいいんですよ。
That's fine.
これが一番いちばん伝つたわります。
That conveys it best.
でも三時さんじに着つくんですって言いうとなんかなんか事情じじょうがありそうです。
But if you say "It's that I'll arrive at three," it sounds like there's some circumstance.
三時さんじに着つくんです。
It's that I'll arrive at three.
なんかだからちょっと遅おくれるかもみたいななんか何なにかがありそう。
It feels like there's something behind it, like maybe you'll be a bit late or something.
なのでねなんかこのどっちが上うえとかじゃなくてシンプルに言いいたいときはます。
So it's not about which one is better — when you want to say it simply, use masu.
説明せつめいしたいときはんです。
When you want to explain, use n desu.
こう考かんがえると楽らくなんじゃないかなと思おもいます。
I think it's easier if you think of it this way.
はい、じゃあね、ちょっとこの辺へんで一緒いっしょに練習れんしゅうをしてみましょうか。
Okay, then let's practice together around here.
私わたしがですますの文ぶんを言ゆうので、それを何何なになにんですとか何何なになにですよっていうのに変かえてみてください。
I'll say a desu/masu sentence, so please try changing it to nan-nani-n-desu or nan-nani-desu-yo.
頭あたまの中なかだけでやってみてもいいですし、実際じっさいに声こえを出だせるんであれば声こえに出だして話はなしてみてもいいと思おもいます。
You can just do it in your head, or if you can speak out loud, try saying it out loud.
じゃあ一ひとつ目めです。
Here's the first one.
友達ともだちに昨日きのうの出来事できごとを話はなすときです。
When you're telling a friend about what happened yesterday.
昨日きのう新あたらしいカフェに行いきました。
Yesterday I went to a new cafe.
どう言いいますか。
How would you say it?
はい、昨日きのう新あたらしいカフェに行いったんですよね。
Yes, like: Yesterday I went to a new cafe, you know.
二ふたつ目め、友達ともだちにおすすめの本ほんを教おしえるときです。
Second one, when you're telling a friend about a book you recommend.
この本ほんはすごく面白おもしろいです。
This book is really interesting.
はい。
Yes.
この本ほんすごく面白おもしろいんですよ。
This book is really interesting, you know.
いいですか。
Got it?
じゃあ三みつ目め。
Now the third one.
ここちょっと注意ちゅういが必要ひつようですよ。
You need to be a bit careful here.
この店みせは静しずかです。
This shop is quiet.
はい。
Yes.
この店みせ静しずかなんです。
This shop is quiet, you know.
しっかり「な」入いれることができましたか。
Were you able to put the "na" in properly?
静しずかんですじゃないですよ。
It's not "shizuka-n-desu."
静しずかなんです。
It's "shizuka-na-n-desu."
これは「な」形容詞けいようしですからね。
Because this is a na-adjective.
じゃあちょっと四よつ目め。
Now the fourth one.
これも引ひっ掛かけです。
This is also a trick question.
やってみましょう。
Let's try it.
仕事しごとで上司じょうし、先輩せんぱいとかに報告ほうこくするときです。
When you're reporting to your boss or senior at work.
会議かいぎは三時さんじからです。
The meeting is from three o'clock.
これ何々なになにんですに変かえますか。
Would you change this to nan-nani-n-desu?
そうですね、変かえなくていいんです。
Right, you don't need to change it.
会議かいぎは三時さんじからなんですって言いうと何なにか事情じじょうがある感かんじになってしまいますからね。
If you say "the meeting is from three, you know," it sounds like there's some circumstance behind it.
ただの報告ほうこくですからですのままが一番いちばんしっかりと伝つたわります。
Since it's just a report, leaving it as desu conveys it most clearly.
実じつはこれが今日きょう一番いちばん大事だいじなところかもしれません。
Actually, this might be the most important point today.
なんでもかんでもんですにすれば自然しぜんになるわけじゃないんですね。
It's not that everything becomes natural just by making it n-desu.
そうです。
That's right.
場面ばめんで選えらぶんです。
You choose based on the situation.
ね、でもちょっとまあせっかくなので逆ぎゃくも一ひとつだけやっていきましょうか。
But since we're here, let's do just one in reverse.
んですの文ぶんをですますに戻もどしてみてください。
Please try changing this n-desu sentence back into desu-masu form.
じゃあ来月らいげつ日本にほんに行いくんです。
So, I'm going to Japan next month, you see.
来月らいげつ日本にほんに行いきます。
I will go to Japan next month.
ですね。
Right.
これはね、両方りょうほうできると強つよいんです。
You see, it's powerful if you can do both of these.
場面ばめんによって言いい切きりできるようになるので、
Because you'll become able to speak decisively depending on the situation,
丁寧ていねいに言いい切きりたいときはます使つかって、説明せつめいしたいときはんです使つかって、これを自分じぶんで選えらべるようになります。
use masu when you want to state something politely, use n-desu when you want to explain, and you'll be able to choose this yourself.
それと最後さいごに一ひとつ、今日きょうね、
And one last thing, since we studied this today,
これを勉強べんきょうしたので、次つぎに日本人にほんじんと話はなす機会きかいがあったら一回いっかいだけ、
next time you have a chance to talk with a Japanese person, just once,
一回いっかいだけで大丈夫だいじょうぶなので何々なになにんです。
just once is okay, so [say] something-something-n-desu.

あとは文ぶんをつなげていくのがすごく難むずかしいというものです。
Also, connecting sentences together is very difficult.
例たとえば日本にほんの文化ぶんかは面白おもしろいと思おもっていて、その後あとに止とまってしまう。
For example, they stop after saying, I think Japanese culture is interesting, and...
言いいたいことはたくさんあるのにつなげるのも終おわらすのも難むずかしいっていう方ほう。
For people who have a lot they want to say but find it hard to both connect and finish sentences.
なので次回じかいはこの話はなしをしていきたいと思おもいます。
