Yes, so this time, I released a video saying I bought Subaru's Trailseeker, which is a battery EV, right
Battery EVs still have quite a lot of complicated factors in various areas, and I think there are some parts that are hard to understand
I think there are largely two of them
One is subsidies. I've explained subsidies in a separate video, so please watch that as well
And the other is charging time and charging fees. I think there's quite a lack of transparency there too, so I've put together some information on charging fees in my own way, and this time I'll explain it while giving a bit of a lecture to cameraman Osumi-kun
I'd like to explain it
So please go ahead. Please. First, did you know there are two ways to charge a battery EV
It seems so. That's right. Well, it depends on the model, but most models have two
One is normal charging
Right, normal charging uses charging equipment installed at homes or offices, and the output is generally about six kilowatts
in the case of my Trailseeker
from almost zero to a full charge, it takes about thirteen hours. That's normal charging
And the other one is rapid charging
And rapid charging is a type of charging with a larger connector than normal charging
You know how there are chargers at expressway service areas and such, right
Those are mostly rapid chargers. I see. There are also some at roadside stations and convenience stores lately, and those are rapid chargers. Yes
As for the cost, rapid charging is of course more expensive, but I'll explain in detail later exactly how much it is
So first, let me start with the conclusion
The conclusion is
if the electricity rate is around 58 yen or less, then electricity costs are cheaper than a gasoline car
That's what it comes down to
Yes. Yes. So this time, I'd like to compare gasoline costs and electricity costs as I go along. Yes
By the way, this figure of 58 yen is based on the fuel economy of the Corolla-class car that Osumi-kun drives
Corolla-class cars have pretty good fuel economy, right. Yeah. That's right
Yes. Right. Since that's the baseline, if you use a car with worse fuel economy than Corolla-class, for example a minivan, for the calculation, this 58 yen
would probably go even higher. To 70 or 80. Yes. It would become that kind of figure, so please take this as a figure that's quite favorable to gasoline cars
I hope you'll take it that way. That's right. Yes. And one more important thing is if you have a charging spot at home where you can charge an EV
then I can say this for sure. An EV is definitely cheaper. That's right. Yes
So let's dig a bit deeper into what these two points actually mean
I'd like to talk a little bit about that
Yes. Yes. So this time we'll compare a gasoline car and an EV, so first let's give an example for the gasoline car. Yes
As a specific example for a gasoline car, gasoline is now about 170 yen per liter, right
Well, that's about right. It's come down a bit, but I think it's fine to think of it as around that. That's on the high side, maybe. Yeah. And fuel economy is 25 kilometers per liter. Yes
That's a pretty good figure. Well, that's right. This
It gets that much? A Corolla Cross
If you just drive on regular roads, it'll get about 25 per liter. Seriously. That's amazing
My kei car doesn't even get 20
Well, whatever. Yes. And
well, let's use Osumi-kun's Corolla-class as the actual example this time
in this case, the gasoline car costs about 7 yen to drive 1 km, right. That's right. The calculation is 170 divided by 25, right. That's right. Yes. So you get 7 yen
for a gasoline car
it costs 7 yen per km
Yes. And compared to that, whether electricity is cheaper or more expensive than 7 yen, that's what I'd like to talk about
Yes. Yes. So this time I've prepared one specific example. Because whether electricity or gasoline is cheaper, I think it totally changes depending on the usage situation. That's right. Right, for example, some people never drive on the highway at all and only drive around their house, right. Yeah
There are people like that, and on the complete opposite end, there are people who only drive on the highway
Well, there are people like that, and on the complete opposite end, there are people who only drive on the highway
Well, there might be some people like that, right? Right. Yes. Well, in that kind of case, the difference between gasoline costs and electricity costs becomes huge, so
So this time we've prepared a situation that's kind of in the middle, one that seems quite common. Yes. For example,
about 500 km a month for shopping, commuting, mainly on regular roads,
in this case. Yes. And on top of that,
using 700 km a month for travel and long trips,
and this 700 km is assumed to be mainly on highways. Yes. So this might be quite close to our situation. That's right.
Driving 1,200 km a month means you drive quite a lot, right? That's right, this is an example of someone who drives a lot. That's right. Well, probably in terms of actual situations, this would be driving much less, and this would be a bit less,
which is more typical, I guess. Yes. Well, this time, let's go with this situation of someone who uses highways a lot. Yes.
And first, let's calculate how much the gasoline cost would be if we think about this with a gasoline car. Yes. It works out like this. Yes.
Osumi-kun, could you briefly explain this?
First, it says 500 km per month here, but
Well, we divide this by a fuel economy of 25. Yes, that's right. Yes, and then the 700 km is
for travel and long trips, and in this case, since it's mainly highway driving, in the case of the Corolla Cross,
the fuel economy drops a bit, so yes, let's estimate it a bit lower at about 20
20 is still high, though. It is high, though. Yes, so if we divide by 20 here, the calculation up to this point gives us
the required liters, the amount of gasoline, the amount in liters. And multiply that by 170
yen per liter, and yes, it comes to 9,350
yen. That's right. So if you drive these routes with a Corolla Cross, the monthly gasoline cost would be 9,350 yen. Yes, yes. Now, let me explain what happens if we apply this to electricity costs. Yes, yes
And what's written over here is all about electricity costs,
but
First, as a typical electricity rate for someone who has home charging equipment,
how much does charging cost for this person? It comes to this price. Yes. 31 yen per kilowatt-hour, and
That means it costs 31 yen to charge one kilowatt-hour. Yes.
And what is this figure based on? It's that in the official catalogs from Toyota and Nissan, the cost for charging at home is roughly this amount. Yes.
But this varies from person to person. That's right. Yes, it depends on the electricity rate plan you're on,
and there are also plans where nighttime charging is cheaper. That's right. Yes, so in that case it would probably be cheaper than this. That's possible. Right, so please keep in mind that there's some variation.
Yes.
Yes. So, for one thing, this is the electricity rate when charging at home.
はい
Now, continuing on,
next is the electricity consumption. I bought a Subaru Trailseeker, and the Trailseeker's
efficiency figures are as follows. Yes. On regular roads, it needs 121 watt-hours to drive 1 km,
and on the highway, it uses 135 watt-hours to drive 1 km. So the highway
requires more, so it uses more electricity, right? That's right.
Yes. That's how it works. And if we calculate these, here's what we get,
and here, one more thing we have to consider is, well, home charging at this 31 yen rate is fine, but
when making a round trip, well, this time we talked about
driving km per month, but since it's a 700 km round trip, for example between Tokyo and Nagoya,
This is about a little over km, right? A round trip would be about that, right? That's right. So let's assume we do this. Yes. For a round trip between Tokyo and Nagoya in a Trailseeker,
you'll need to do a fast charge somewhere along the way, I think. That's right. Yeah, well, this also varies by station. For example, if there's a charger in the city in Nagoya, that alone would be enough,
so that would be fine, but there are plenty of cases where that's not available.
They exist, don't they? That's right. Yes, so let's assume one fast charge on the highway,
and that one charge is 40 kilowatt-hours,
Yes. So, for example,
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
So that's what I'd like to assume. Yes. Yes. And in that case, how much the fast charging
electricity cost will actually be, and
this varies quite a bit, you know. Right. Yes. So what's commonly said is that fast charging on the highway costs 140 yen per kilowatt-hour charged,
isn't it, they say. That's quite expensive. It's insanely expensive, right, this.
it's like about four times higher.
Yes. Yes. Well, this time let's assume this worst-case station for now.
Yes. Yes. Then one kilo-watt,
and that means charging 40 kilowatt-hours, so charging on the highway is 40 times,
right.
Right. And the remaining charging cost on local roads, I made this 115, but how I calculated this is,
I did 500 times 121 because you drive 500 km on local roads in a month. Yes. And since you drive 700 km on the highway,
I did km times 135. Yes. Then you get the amount of electricity needed for one month. Right. So calculating this,
it becomes like this. And then 40 is charged on the highway and the rest can be charged at home. Yes. And then 115 times
plus 40 times 143, doing this gives 9,285 yen.
Yes. This is the electricity cost.
So when you compare, it's about the same, right, as gasoline cost. Right, it becomes almost exactly the same. Yes.
Well, it's almost the same, but this was calculated under conditions quite unfavorable for the electric car.
Right. Yes. So calculating with the highest rate, and assuming the gasoline car has extremely good fuel economy, so
so considering that,
even in this situation where you use the highway a lot, I think it's fair to say the electricity is probably cheaper. Right. Yes. So that's one point here.
Is everything okay so far. Yes.
And what we've talked about so far is only the case where you have a charger at home. Yes.
But not everyone necessarily has a charger at home, right. That's right. Yes. Living in an apartment and wanting an EV,
but there are many people whose apartment has no EV
charger, I think. That's right. Yes. So how such people charge,
I think there are roughly two ways.
One is to join a charging service run by an automaker.
That's one pattern.
And the other is what you call a charging card, I know. Charging card, this is the first time I've heard of it.
Yes, when using the chargers on the highway, at first I think you couldn't use them without a card,
and there's a card with an elephant mark. Yes. There's something called e-Mobility Power,
and contracting with it independently to charge, those are the two main patterns.
So first,
what this T-mo is, it's the EV charging service run by Toyota.
Yes. So what is the content of this T-mo service, first the basic fee is zero yen.
Yes, the basic fee is zero yen, but it costs a per-minute fee to charge.
Yes. Well, specifically how much it costs, when using a 50 kilowatt-hour
fast charger, 40 yen per minute.
And from 50 to 150. What's probably common is, what,
it takes 100 kilowatt-hours. Yes. 100
with high
output fast charging, it's 60 yen per minute.
And higher than that,
the 10,000-sale one is higher, probably 150 kilowatt-hours. Yes. Using this, it's 80 yen per minute. I see. Yes.
For example, let's say you charge the Trailseeker's sibling model, the bZ4X Touring. Um,
battery capacity,
so charging 150 kilowatt-hours for 30 minutes means almost a full charge, right. That's right. Yes. So doing this for 30 minutes is 30 times 80, so
2,400 yen. Yeah. Yes. And also with T-mo, like one free fast charge per month or something,
There's a service available, so
yeah, I think this is quite a good deal. Right. Yes.
But one thing to be careful about is that this adds money per minute
There are two types of rapid charging for EVs
The per-minute charging is the same pattern as T-mo. Yes. And there's also a method that calculates by the amount of capacity. Yes. The one adopting this is
and so, Subaru's rapid charging service, well, it's called the Subaru Rapid Charging Service, and this one also has basically zero yen basic fee
I see, I see. And unlike Toyota, Toyota calculated by time, but this one is calculated by electricity amount. I see, I see. Yes, per kilowatt-hour
it costs 27.5 yen to charge
Yes. You can tell this is incredibly cheap. It's cheap, right. It's super cheap. It's super cheap. I mean, it's cheaper than this. That's what it means.
I'm driving that car, but for people driving Subaru EVs, I personally feel that using Subaru's rapid charging service is the most economical.
Yeah, but there's a catch with this too,
As of August 2026, how many locations nationwide does the rapid charging service have
Do you know how many locations it is
How many? Yeah
How many? Only a few dozen. Ah, correct
There are only that many locations. Wow, that's quite few. And one of them is unbelievably in Wadamachi, which is kind of miraculous. It is miraculous. Yeah, that's right. But
there are only that many locations, and I also looked it up and there was one in Nagoya too. I see. So when imagining a situation like this time, well, charging at home is probably
the cheapest way to charge, but let's say we charged at home today,
If there's no charging at home, it's like charging at a Subaru dealer. If I were to fully charge my Trailseeker
entirely with this, 27.5 times 75, calculating with the station from earlier,
it was about 4,600 yen, so it's like about half price
That's how it works out. Right. So. But this is a pretty wishful story, so
Well, to talk about the reality of rapid charging, there are quite a few types of rapid chargers,
Probably the most expensive is this one. The one we talked about earlier, right
Yes. But this one is expensive because you charge on the expressway. Right. Yes, charging on regular roads would be cheaper.
Yes, for example, there are rapid chargers at roadside stations or convenience stores on regular roads, and charging there is cheaper. It becomes like 110 yen or so.
Yes. There's also that, and there's also the per-capacity price. Yes. There's one that's 65 yen per kilowatt,
Yes, the Trailseeker is 75 kilowatt-hours, so 75 times 65, how much is that about
It's just under 5,000 yen, right
Right. So even with rapid charging it's about 5,000 yen, so it's about the same as gasoline costs. I see.
Yes, so there's a story like that, and rapid charging really comes in many different types.
Yes, and even if you don't have a charger at home, for example if you go to commercial facilities like Ario or Nitori,
there are also regular chargers there
Yes, with regular charging you can charge even more cheaply, for example about 6 yen or 8 yen per minute, you can charge for that much.
So charging at places like that is also
personally I think it's fine
I think so. I think it's best to have a charger at home, but if you can't, well, joining the car's DR
like this TM or Subaru rapid charging service and such,
charging at the dealer is cheap, I think, and also paying as a visitor at so much per minute is fine too, I think.
Yes. Finally, I'd like to talk a bit more about charging cards. The e-Mobility Power
charging card I mentioned earlier,
whether this one is a good deal or not,
well, the conclusion is
if you use it about once a month, using it as a visitor is cheaper. I see. The reason is, the earlier Timo and Subaru had zero monthly basic fee, but
this card costs 4,108 yen per month in basic fee.
Yes, this rate does include the cost of regular charging, so if you're someone who mainly uses a lot of regular charging, this could still be quite a good deal, but...
Well, if you have a charger at home, there are definitely cases where it's cheaper to just pay per charge each time rather than going out of your way to sign up for this.
I think you kind of get the idea — it might be a bit complicated, but yeah, I guess that's generally how it is.
Right, and also about what we talked about earlier, whether time-based billing or volume-based billing is better,
with this, volume-based billing is definitely better, right? Volume-based.
そう
Right.
With time-based billing, the amount you charge changes depending on the condition of the battery. Oh, I see. Just like with a smartphone — when a phone is really hot, it doesn't charge very well, right?
Right, it doesn't. Cars are the same — when the battery is extremely hot, charging efficiency is super low. I see, so it barely recovers,
yet you keep getting charged more and more. Exactly, exactly. That actually happened to me once, seriously. I see. When I borrowed a car from Ii Atelier, there was a time when a 30-minute fast charge only recovered about 50 km or so. I see. So thinking about that,
yeah, so that's something to keep in mind.
I think you need to be a bit careful around here.
Yeah. Well, I guess that's about it.
I don't actually own one yet either, so
I think I'll gradually learn more about how it actually feels to use from here on out, but
for now, I've summarized what I know so far.
That's it.
はい
Yes.
