Hello, I'm Atsuhiko Nakata. Alright, let's get started right away today. Extreme Modern Society. The Russia-Ukraine War
Why won't it end? Please end it, Putin. Well, here we are again
Please end it, Putin, is what it is. So that
It's been over
two years, no, three, four years, since the full-scale invasion in 2022
it's already been four years, hasn't it? When will it end, we still don't know, and in the news, ceasefire negotiations keep coming up
Ceasefire negotiations are happening, they say. Sometime in September or not, but the US ambassador has gone to Russia, or to Ukraine, and said it to both sides, something like that
At this stage in September, there's news coming out from the Russian side saying they're looking forward to resuming US-mediated talks, sounding positive, but despite this kind of news always coming out
it still never ends, right? Today we're going to explain why that is
I'd like to summarize it simply so you can get it into your head
Because after four years, including the fine details, there have been changes in the war situation and all that. Anyway, the information is overwhelming, right? But more importantly, now, why are we fighting this war again? I think most of you have forgotten. Why did Putin attack again? Something like that
But this is quite
hard to wrap up, and behind that lies the question of why did they attack in the first place, so I'd like to explain that
And before we get to what was it in the first place
Let's look at the specific points where the ceasefire is not going well at this point
Let's take a look at the specifics. The reason is that the conditions don't match
For a ceasefire, it's like this and like that, so let's go. What does it mean that they don't match? Do you know what the Russian side is demanding?
It's surprisingly not well known. What's surprisingly not well known is that they're saying 'please give us additional territory.' In other words, the current front line
So basically, where Russia has invaded and it's essentially become Russian territory, or occupied
is Ukraine's territory
すると
So
there's this front line where they're somehow holding on
There's this image of a ceasefire right along this front line
Right? We've come this far, so let's stop here, that's the image of a ceasefire, but Russia isn't saying let's stop here
They're saying if you give us the rest of this Donetsk Oblast from here on
unconditionally, we'll have a ceasefire. They're putting forward those conditions. And the problem is that
this also includes
important defensive strongholds. In other words, because those are there, we can't advance, that's the problem
It's an obstacle in our way. If you give it to us
fine, we'll stop, they say
But it's scary, right? Why is this condition
because it directly conflicts with Ukraine's conditions. Ukraine's condition is ensuring safety after the ceasefire. In other words
once we have a ceasefire, you'll never attack again
They want this promise, but this condition itself threatens the safety
assurance condition, you can kind of see that, right?
In other words, let's say they accept the ceasefire. If they accept the ceasefire, they hand over the rest of Donetsk Oblast and the defensive strongholds
to the other side and then have a ceasefire. If
this is broken and then after the ceasefire, Russia attacks again, they'd start from a far more disadvantageous situation
than now, you understand, right?
In other words, if you hand over your shield
I'll stop fighting. But once you've handed over your shield
next time you'll be punched while your defenses are weak
so they're being presented with terrible conditions. Why are they presenting such harsh conditions?
That's what we want to understand. Why are they so fixated on this Donetsk Oblast? Let's recall the fundamentals. In other words, the news only goes this far
so you'll keep watching the news without understanding why, and it won't sink in. This is where YouTube University's
true power comes in
So let's recall those fundamentals
Russia, in the first place, yes
said they wanted to stop Ukraine's westward movement and bring it back into their sphere of influence. Yes, you can't even follow this word anymore, right?
はい
Yes
I've never said 'you're becoming Westernized' in the middle of the day
Yeah, I do say things like 'you're becoming like an old man'
Ah, I often write a little and say 'you're becoming like an old man,' but I've never thought 'you're becoming Westernized.' What I mean by West and East is, this is West and East. In other words,
After World War II, we kind of got used to it, there were communist and capitalist blocs, well, the US and UK
centered capitalist bloc, and France and others too. And
Russia and China, well, and the Soviet Union
China and the Soviet Union and such
were called the communist bloc, and
the political systems were different.
The communist bloc was basically about workers overthrowing capitalists, and basically operating on a planned economy. In other words, the workers who said they didn't like the idea of
the rich getting richer and richer in a competitive society, said they were going to create their own utopia, and read Marx's books, like Capital. Right, if workers basically advanced with a state-led planned economy,
there wouldn't be inequality, that's how communism progressed.
What did this was what's called the Eastern bloc.
And the Western bloc is about each company competing, the rich can get richer,
and if you can't manage that, you just have to live accordingly. This is capitalism, what the US, UK, and France chose.
この
This
five countries are important because they're the victors. The victors of World War II are these five countries: the US, UK, France,
China, and the Soviet Union.
These five countries are exactly the permanent members of the United Nations. This United Nations is a union of victors. So who are the defeated
countries? That would be Japan.
Right. In the difference between the defeated and victorious countries,
of the five victors, three are capitalist and two are communist. The two who chose the communist
bloc were the Eastern bloc.
But communism has already collapsed, right? That's the first thing.
The Soviet Union collapsed, and China, since Deng Xiaoping's era, has in a sense
even become a first-rate country.
It just opened up capitalism, and now companies like Huawei and Alibaba are thriving and selling products all over the world, right?
So communism itself is gone.
However, this human conflict is a remnant of
the team competition that shaped the world's discovery.
Especially this
what Russia is afraid of is
that Western military alliance.
That is the so-called
North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If you look at the treaty, you won't understand what it's about, but
in this team competition, the Western side—the US, UK, France—these
people who support this way of thinking, this military alliance is called NATO.
If Ukraine were to approach this NATO military alliance,
for Russia, having an ally go to the other team would be terrifying.
Why? Because Russia is huge, right? It's a vast country, and you don't know if it'll be attacked from this side or that side.
It's a neighbor of Europe and also a neighbor of Japan.
Yes, the Northern Territories. They're adjacent, right? Japan is a neighbor of Japan and also a neighbor of Europe. If you're attacked from both sides at the same time, that's unbearable.
That's exactly why, the neighboring
the neighboring regions should be on our side,
on our team.
Why the Northern Territories haven't been returned comes down to this.
If the Northern Territories were returned to Japan and US military bases were placed there, that would be scary. So the area between Japan and Russia, the Northern Territories,
are Russia's, and they don't want to give them up.
Russia is always afraid of this, because with such a large territory, you don't know where you'll be attacked from, so they want to surround themselves with allies,
with friendly nations.
It is because of this that I want to support Ukraine
is what I think, and along with military rumors, thoughts keep circling around about the neighboring country
This is because they only split apart later, but they have a long history in Europe — they were originally one country or the same ethnicity, there's that kind of thing
Yes, Putin says it, historically we were one people, that's what he says. Russia and Ukraine are historically composed of very closely related peoples
And because of that, aren't we the same country, compatriots, aren't we closer than Europe, aren't we Russian — so why are you going over there?
It's scary and sad, so stop Ukraine's westward shift and bring it back into the sphere of influence
This was the key point, yes
That's exactly why the trigger was pulled, and that was in 2014
Actually, you might think Russia invaded Ukraine in 2024 and think 'has it been four years already?' but 12 years ago this conflict was already brewing. What was it?
The occupation of Crimea
The lightning occupation of the Crimean Peninsula
was carried out
Yes, Putin suddenly did it. Why? Because of this
In 2014, Ukraine's domestic system changed — that was the fall of the pro-Russian government
Yes, Ukraine has two factions, so to speak. One faction says let's get along with Russia, while the other says no no no
We should get along with Europe, let's get closer to the EU — that faction. Isn't it like that in Japan too?
Some people say the US is a big ally, the Japan-US alliance is important
But if you try to get closer to China, then
you get the impression of being dragged into political conflict. In any country, which side you get along with is something politicians
face in a very harsh way, and for citizens too, depending on the era, which side they support can change
はい
Yes
This is very similar to the Iran war we covered last time
はい
Yes
Iran originally had a pro-American government — the US was supporting a pro-American military government. But no no, we don't want to be at America's beck and call, military dictatorship is like mafia — a revolution happened and it became anti-American
With the government becoming anti-American, it started to
stand against America and Israel. This was between a pro-American government and an anti-American government, and here it's between a pro-Russian government and an anti-Russian government
Ukraine's transition happened in 2014
took over and started leaning toward the EU. The moment this became clear, Russia made its move
The lightning occupation of Crimea — this was Russia's
fear of having its neighbor stolen by the West and NATO's
power being built there — what would happen to us? They were consumed by that fear
This was an event from 12 years ago. However, our main full-scale invasion happened in 2022
In other words, this lightning occupation succeeded, Putin
succeeded, and he was able to do as he pleased both politically and diplomatically, and territory
Well, some Russian people think Crimea and Ukraine were originally Russian's, historically speaking
ね
right
National territory is quite difficult — China also says Taiwan is one China, and regarding the Korean Peninsula, it's now divided into two countries, but weren't North Korea and South Korea originally one country called Korea? Depending on your era and historical perspective, your own ideology changes where one country begins and ends
So within Russia too, this Ukraine
well, some people think Crimea was originally Russian's, it's the same thing, so the annexation of Crimea was popular
Historically, presidents who win wars are very popular with the people
Because while the economy prospers and territory expands, it of course comes with pain
Historically, looking back, you might think 'stop it already,' but for the people living in the country at the time, the economy improved, so 'oh great, a president of the era' — and later the image remains good
That's how world history works
This annexation of Crimea, well to put it bluntly
you could say they got a taste for it — why not just do it lightning-fast?
They thought why not do it again — that was in 2022
With this full-scale Russian invasion, the Ukraine war like we see now
they didn't start it thinking it would last four years
They started it thinking they'd do another Crimea-style occupation, so they lightning-struck Kyiv first
This was supposed to be a lightning-fast disaster that would end in a few days or a week or two,
like the Crimea disaster, but this time it didn't go well.
This lightning operation led by the master and Kii failed,
and Putin has also switched his goal to the eastern and southern regions,
aiming to secure them as a corridor. Yes, here's the answer I mentioned earlier. In other words,
if he ends up failing to capture the Donetsk region, people will say, 'What have you been doing for four years?'
はい
Yes.

Right, they're producing 3 million of these FPV drones domestically per year, and by 2026, in six

deployments, 95% of those drones are domestically produced.
At an incredible speed, drone startups and
such are being created, with tremendous momentum. Why? Because they're being used.
In other words,
because there's a battlefield,
they use them, make them, use them. 'Please do more of this.' Then they develop it, make it, use it—like that.
It's not the kind of development speed where you build it and think, 'When the real thing comes, maybe I'll try it.' That's how it's become.
But whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, there's a question. Of course, war does
advance technology and
stimulate industry. But what this situation means is,
the faster drones grow, the more the damage and harshness of war are now
advancing at an exponential rate. That's what's important.
It may seem to be settling,
but it continues to advance. The cruelty continues to grow. On top of that, what about Russia? Surprisingly, over these five years, Putin's approval rating is 76%, but
does that mean all Russian citizens are raising both hands cheering 'Banzai Putin'? No, it doesn't. Because up to September 2025, at least 1,299 people
have been put on trial
for opposing the war. In other words, if you oppose the war, you get arrested and put on trial.
The control over speech is extremely strict.
'Can you use the internet as you please? Can you get information from abroad? Use the internet like this, use your smartphone like this, you must not look at this kind of information.' Who was saying things like this? 'Go to trial.' When a person is waging war, the people have no power to stop it.

You might have that impression, but it's not quite like that
The constitution has been amended over the years. What happened after amending the constitution? Putin's popularity now
Six years per term
So two terms means 12 years
But Putin has already served longer than that. That's because he reset his popularity once through a constitutional amendment. So in terms of Putin's current popularity
term, but it's the second year of his fifth term, so his popularity under the current law goes up to 2036, which is 10 years from now
On top of that
In this state of dominance, with a law that frees him, a country where the president controls the judiciary — when this 10 years comes
Even if he resets again, there's no way to stop him, right? Putin is currently 73 years old, if
he lives to that age, that's 27 years
Perhaps this measure might not work. In the meantime, how we need to stop this war is a task for humanity

We thought, 'Was there ever such a war? We need to move on from this kind of place,' didn't we? But that's not the case
In modern times, major wars are being fought by war nations and superpowers

That is

These are the very great powers that were trying to create a system to maintain peace
If a war were to start, no one in the world could stop it, and once a war begins, if those in power run amok, even the citizens
and democratic politics have no way to stop it
So wherever we are, we must not be wrong — we need to think about how to end wars, and that's why I watch international news with that in mind
And even just in case, I believe we always need to keep an eye on politics and power so that such a thing doesn't happen in Japan or its surroundings
