how will American voters judge these words and actions of Mr. Trump?
Yes, the midterm elections are approaching in November, but I would like to organize the current situation again.
はい
Yes.
In the first place, the midterm election
is a congressional election held in the year between presidential elections.
About one-third of the Senate seats and all seats in the House of Representatives are up for election.
Therefore, it is said to be
a vote of confidence in the incumbent president's policies.
However, there is a strong tendency in midterm elections for the ruling party to lose seats in the House of Representatives.
In the 138 years since the actual election
out of the 22 times since then, the ruling party has been able to increase its seats
only twice: the Clinton administration, which ended with a fiscal surplus for the first time in about 30 years, and the Bush administration with a 91% approval rating
after the 9/11 attacks.
Currently, the Republican Party holds a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, but what is the situation in the Senate?
According to Reuters,
the outcome of the Senate race is unclear as it is a toss-up, and for the House,
they analyze that the Democratic Party is likely to win.
On the other hand,
as for the conservative Fox News,
they describe the Senate as a toss-up where it is unknown who will win, and for the House,
they analyze that the Democratic Party has a slight lead.
So, if the opposition party wins a majority in the House and it becomes a divided government, what will happen to the Trump administration?
It may become difficult to realize bills and policies such as tax cuts,
and there is a risk of impeachment proceedings to remove the president,
meaning policies could stagnate. So, I feel like Mr. Trump is getting impatient ahead of this midterm election. What do you think, Mr. Yamanaka? It's Japan, right? He's saying some unbelievable things, isn't he?
However, we have reached the midterm election primaries, but what we need to look at
is the next four months.
Yes. Actually, it will be a very important four months for the world.
Especially for Japan, it will be a very important four months. To be specific,
starting from the 24th of next month, each country
will have a US-China summit. And after that, there is the Swedish general election in October.
Then, on November 3rd, the current US midterm elections.
And on November 18th and 19th, there is the APEC summit in China.
And one month later,
there will be a summit in Miami, USA,
and it is said that US-China summits will be held in both cases.
So, what is happening is that it is clear that the US and China are confronting each other. And furthermore,
the US's leadership seems to be declining significantly.
And in such a situation, regarding Japan, Mr. Ishihara, I think that even in public opinion polls, people say foreign policy is good.
Why is that?
They say that the alliance and cooperation with allied countries are working very well.
That seems to be a factor in the evaluation, but specifically, the alliance is with America, right? The American alliance.
Well,
はね
even that America is strengthening its cooperation with China,
and every country, from Australia to the Philippines,
is facing China intensely.
At that time, what should Japan do?
I don't think there is such a thing. So, unnecessarily,
if it comes to attacking foreign countries,
Mr. Abe has been dealing with China entirely through the Abe-Xi Jinping talks from 2017 to 2019. So, Japan should also face China while confronting it intensely, but also
I think it is necessary to advance diplomacy with China.
Japan is in a situation where it must review its current diplomacy.
Mr. Ito, even so, 5,000 dollars per person? In Japanese yen, that's 180 trillion yen. Where will the funding
come from?
Yes, the funding cannot be covered by tariffs, of course.
And now the US is facing
a fiscal deficit and a long-term interest rate hike,
so this is not a policy that should be issued at this timing. There is no doubt about it.
And recently, the IMF has been making quite pointed remarks to Japan that it should stop its reflationary policy, right in its own backyard.
So, this is the phenomenon that has occurred in the United States.
で
And
the dollar is the key currency,
and well, U.S. Treasury bonds are considered the world's safe assets,
so it was said that they were secure,
but at this point, we are seeing instability in various places. As rhetoric escalates ahead of the midterm elections,
whether or not this will lead to the destabilization of the financial system
is something I think we should keep an eye on.
