Good morning.
I'm Kevin O'Connor, and welcome back to this old house.
As you can see by all the greenery, today is planting day.
Now, for the past 110 years, folks who lived in this house probably came and went by this side entrance on a daily basis.
Want to go?
Originally, they probably pulled up in their carriages.
Today, they pulled up in their cars.
But this is where they entered the house.
And as a result, Roger, looks like you're spending a lot of time and resources over here.
Well, this is the special side of the house, Kevin.
Like you said, everyone coming down the driveway is going to see it, so we really want it to stand out.
The first thing we're going to do is we're going to step down onto a bluestone walkway, which will lead you right into the backyard.
Nice touch.
Now, because this side is so special, landscape architect Stephanie Hubbard has painted it with a bunch of different plants.
Now, this is the first.
This is microbiota, also called Siberian carpet.
Is it a juniper that kind of creeps and crawls?
Creeps like a juniper, but better than a juniper because it will tolerate shade and grow very well.
Now our other plant here is called eucara.
Now all these plants have been brought to us by our nurseryman Peter Mezit this morning, morning, Peter.
Good to see you, Peter.
Now look at this eucara.
It has this foliage that stands out for six months, so it's a great plant to put on the banking.
All about this color.
Trying to make it pretty over here.
I can sell.
What do you got here?
On the top of it, this is called anemone or wind flower.
You can see that late in the season, it has this pretty white flower.
That is beautiful.
And so you get the effect as you come along this blue stone walkway, this white line of flowers.
It's going to be really pretty here.
All right.
よし。
So you know, I never realized just how much real estate you had over here in the side yard.
This is bigger than I expected.
Just because two days ago this was all covered with all the construction material needed to build this house.
What's the plan for over here?
Well, over here in the corner, we're putting in a hydrangea.
This is hydrangea in a bell.
Now these flowers are going to get huge.
It's a mophead, and they'll turn brown and be attractive even in the winter.
So again, more of that color right in the sight line of anyone coming and going.
All right.
Now we got a lot going on in the front and back, so we'll check them with you later.
Great.
Well, we're also going to be checking in with our kitchen cabinets.
They are finally arriving.
We ordered them months ago, and they're coming all the way down from Canada.
We are sending Richard all the way to Wisconsin to check in on an often overlooked piece of equipment in the kitchen.
Hopefully, we'll get some good news from him.
Unfortunately, we are getting some bad news from our garage.
This building right here, well, it's got some problems.
Actually, big problems.
So we're going to learn about those as well as everything else when we come back.
Well, as if Tommy didn't have enough to contend with with this big old house, now he's got himself a little old garage that's causing him some trouble.
So Tommy, what's the problem?
Well, first of all, Kevin, I have a lot more work to do in the garage than I originally planned on doing.
The only thing that we were going to do in the garage is take the two garage door openings and make them a foot wider so that they can get the car in and out that makes sense.
Right, but when we cut open, we found that this wall right here—the entire front wall—was all rotted.
What's with you and rot?
It seems to follow you everywhere.
It likes me.
All right, so I see some new green wood here.
Pressure treaters suggest you restructure this whole wall.
Right, rebuild the whole thing.
Not to make light of it, but that doesn't seem like too much trouble for a guy like you.
Well, that's actually the easy part.
Let me show you what's going on down here on this side and around the back.
All right, you see the different color of the foundation here?
Yeah, looks like new concrete poured on top of old concrete.
Exactly.
Now, if you look right here, you can see what we're doing.
We've added this new concrete.
Right here, on top of the existing foundation that ran all the way around the garage.
You've opened the space up for us.
So on top of the original foundation, I presume you started off with.
There was a four by six sill that was untreated, and the walls had four by six posts holding it up.
And then on top of that, they probably had sheathing and the shingles.
There was sheathing and actually three rows of shingle.
So this was all wood.
All right, so you dug into here, and what'd you find?
Well, first of all, I found that the sheathing and the shingles were rotted.
Not only that, the posts that hold the building up and the sill, the four by six sill.
This is probably the best piece around the old garage.
This thing is completely gone.
Now, so what would cause this level of rot?
Because the garage isn't all that old, is it?
That's probably sixty years old, my guess.
Look at on the top of the foundation, right here.
This gravel inside was probably six or eight inches lower.
So the original floor was down and away from the sill.
Exactly.
The right way to do it.
But over time, someone wanted to raise the height of the floor, so they brought in probably twelve or fourteen inches of gravel.
They poured a floor on top of that.
then, pretty recently, someone else poured another floor on top of that.
So let me guess: when they did all that work, they didn't do anything to take into account all this wood.
Nope, and all of this concrete and gravel rotted the wood.
All right, so you have cut all that out.
You've added some new rebar here.
Obviously, getting ready to put this additional pour on top of the old foundation.
Right.
Now, before we get to that, though, what's holding up this wall?
I have a temporary wall inside.
Let me show you.
Now, what you have to remember, Kevin, is we did not do the foundation all at once.
We had to do it in sections.
We needed to transfer the load from the wall to the floor.
We simply put some jacks in the corner and a beam across the top.
In between the corners, we had to brace the wall.
Also, to do that, I simply bolted a two by ten to the wall above.
I jammed these two by six in tightly.
That took the load off of the wall, and that allows you to cut out all the rot that was underneath there.
Exactly.
All right.
よし。
So with that gone, and then after the pour is done, let me see if I understand this correctly.
What you're going to end up with?
You cut the old rotted studs, and it went all the way down to that old foundation.
18 inches down, all rotted.
All right.
よし。
So you poured up the new foundation, level with this concrete floor right here.
Right.
Then you left enough room to get the two pressure-treated sill plates in, and we toenailed the stud to the sill plate, and we're in business.
And so now we're ready to pour this side.
Right.
All right.
よし。
Let's fill this form up.
So this is going to hold back our concrete here, right on that shelf.
Now what I did is I put a little plexiglass window in here, so you can see the concrete come in under the floor, go in through the block, and around the rebar.
Tell me you're a madman.
All right.
よし。
So we brace this in place.
Yep.
うん。
And we're gonna start mixing.
All right, Mike's gonna bring the first load in.
We're gonna simply dump it on the floor close to the hole, and John's gonna push it into place.
See, now you can start to see the concrete as it goes around the rebar.
It's actually filling the holes of the block, and it's gonna go right underneath the slab, filling the void.
What time?
You weren't kidding.
This is a lot of work.
Were you expecting it to be this bad?
Absolutely not, Kevin.
Remember, we brought in a pest control expert to treat the building against termites and carpenter ants.
But when I opened the building up and found all this rot, we had to take care of it.
So now we got ourselves some good structure and future protection against the insects.
That's right.
It's work that had to be done.
A lot has changed in the kitchen since last time we were here.
The plastering has been completed.
The quarter-sawn white oak floor has been laid.
It still has to be sanded.
And today the kitchen cabinets arrived, so we brought in a few so we could take a look.
This is all under the watchful eye of Yael Peleg, and the cabinets come to us courtesy of Lee Elliot.
Hey, Lee, these came all the way from Canada, right?
Yes, kitchen.
All right.
よし。
Well, let's take a look at these.
These base cabinets, to my eye, have sort of a cream color.
It's a macadamia finish.
Mm-hmm.
Looks nice.
Ooh, full extension drawers.
Heavy-duty full extension.
Soft-close drawer slides.
These are rugged.
So this is soft close.
Yeah.
Nice, nice.
It's three quarter plywood construction as well throughout the box.
All right.
よし。
Nice thick side panels, and it looks like that's a prefinished plywood on the inside.
Yeah, it's a prefinished UV interior.
It's very durable and easy to clean.
Right, and that means you don't have to paint the inside of the cabinet.
That's right.
Now I notice the end panels on these base cabinets don't go to the floor; they sit up on these legs.
Yeah, it's an adjustable leg leveling system that we use.
It makes the installer's job much easier when it comes to putting cabinetry in place.
So even though this is a new floor, it's sitting on a hundred-year-old frame, so it might be a little bit out of level, and that's going to help a lot, right?
Now over here, a slightly different color.
It's an olive green finish, similar to the macadamia, but darker.
You can see the hand glazing on there and the brush stroking.
Right.
It's hanging up flat panels.
You can see those grain lines from the brush, and so people like these highlights in the corners.
Yeah, it gives it that authentic hand-applied look.
Right, sort of makes those moldings pop as well.
Self-closing concealed hinges.
Yes.
はい。
Oh, and soft closing doors too.
Soft closes well.
Well, I can't wait to see these all installed.
The centerpiece of this room is going to be the countertop for the island.
We saw it fabricated a few weeks ago.
It's three inch thick, end grain teak, and it has a nice chocolate brown finish.
Now that we know the tones of the elements for the kitchen, we have one more chance to finalize the stain for the floors.
So we brought in Steve Dubuc, and you've been working on a mixture for us.
Yes.
はい。
Well, how did you get started?
First, I actually got started by a photo provided by the homeowner.
Right.
Wow, a photo that doesn't tell you very much about the color of the wood.
No, it doesn't.
So it looks like you've actually made up some real world samples.
Yes.
はい。
So this is the same flooring we're using, and these pieces go all the way across here under this tape.
But we're seeing different tones.
So over here, I see that the grain is popping out a little bit more.
It's darker.
I really like that look.
And as we move to this side, it gets lighter and a little more milky.
The grain is not popping out here.
Yes.
はい。
And which one of the homeowners leaning to?
Actually, the homeowners are leaning more toward the milky or of the three.
Okay.
So what's the recipe?
The recipe is first.
I started with an aniline dye for a background color.
So this is a powder, and you mix it with either water or alcohol.
What did you mix it with here?
In this application, we used water.
Okay.
And how about these?
These two.
It's Jacobean stain and pickled oak stain.
And these three colors were established by mixing these two colors in different amounts.
All right.
So for this, what's the proportions?
It was seventy-five percent pickled oak to twenty-five percent Jacobean.
All right.
So three to one.
Yes.
はい。
Is that some of it here?
Yeah.
Okay.
All right, boy.
Mixed up.
You'd hardly believe that most of it is white.
Turns out to be sort of a grayish brown, I guess.
Yes.
はい。
So over here you have a big sample made up for approval, and this is the aniline dye.
Yes.
はい。
Now it did raise the grain a bit.
Is that okay?
Yes, that actually will help the penetration of the oil-based stain.
Okay.
Can we see some of the oil-based go in?
Absolutely, ma'am.
Wow, looks almost like paint.
So you're laying on a fairly heavy coat.
Yes.
はい。
And that's just so it'll have nice, even penetration.
And how long will you let that sit?
A minute or two before I wipe it.
Let's just wipe it down.
Ah, look at that.
It sort of pops the grain a little bit, but it gives it more of a brown tone.
So, how long does this have to dry?
Six hours to overnight.
Okay.
And what's the top coat going to be?
Ah, the top coat will be three coats of oil-based polyurethane.
All right.
よし。
I'd like to see some of that going because that's really going to give us the best look of the final finish.
Sure.
Boy, what a difference that makes.
So, Steve, when are you going to get final sign off from the homeowners?
Ah, hopefully tonight.
Well, I think they're going to love it.
I'm sure they will.
Well, back when this old house first started installing kitchens, the garbage disposer was considered an option, maybe even a luxury.
But today, most homeowners could imagine a kitchen without one, and a lot has changed.
So, we have sent Richard Chatterley off to find out what's new.
Today, we are in Racine, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the modern garbage disposer.
In 1927, a local architect, John Hamers, was tinkering in his basement, and this is what he came up with: a sheet metal grinder, a pulley, and a motor—the very first disposer.
In 1956, this is what you might have found: the Gold Comet, sort of an Elvis look to it.
And through the years, has been many design innovations.
Well, today we are in Racine to talk about some new technology—a garbage disposer that grinds better and is about sixty percent quieter than any other.
This I gotta say.
Or here, Larry, I haven't saw my share of these in my day.
Well, that's our half horsebar model that we've been building for about thirty years, Richard.
Now, what happens up here in this room?
Well, this is our motor test lab, and we test all of the different motors that go in our products.
All right, and I see a couple of the disposers down here underneath the sinks.
The one on the left is one you have in your hand, and we have a newer model on the right.
All right, so what are you testing for here?
We're going to test for noise and fineness of grind.
Okay.
So he's putting some food down the sink.
Same load in both disposers.
Okay.
Same.
Ooh, that's that's pretty familiar sound—the typical grinding sound of a disposer.
Mm-hmm.
Now we'll do the one on the right.
Wow, that's dramatically quieter.
That'd be a lot more comfortable in the kitchen, wouldn't it?
Yes, it would be.
All right, let's see how we did grinding.
You'll hand me one of those platters, a silver platter, no less, huh?
Yes.
はい。
Nothing but fancy schmancy.
Yeah.
All right, so this is this one, and this is the model you had.
You can see it's a little coarser grind.
Yeah.
うん。
And the one on the right.
A lot more fine here, and this is all going down the drain.
So that'd be a lot better for the plumbing system.
So you make all your disposers here?
We sure do.
Can we see them being made?
Absolutely.
All right.
よし。
It all starts with raw material, Richard.
We bring a lot of steel into this plant every day.
I see one right here.
What's this now?
This is carbon steel that we use to make motors.
Now, this is what you'd use for things that come in contact with water, though, right?
Oh no, we would use stainless steel for that.
Well, certainly is a good-sized coil.
It sure is.
It's ten tons.
Let's go see what we do with it.
All right.
よし。
What you're seeing here, Richard, is a loading of the master coil onto a spindle.
It's fed through a series of cutting knives and cut into various widths that we can use in our punch press operations later on.
So it's like a giant bread slicer.
Yes, it is.
It takes over 40 different stamp steel parts to make a complete disposer.
Here at this operation, we're making the lower end frame.
So we're doing it right on this machine right here.
That's right.
At this press, we're making stainless steel stoppers.
Oh yeah.
You can see the coil unwinding, being fed through the die, and the finished part comes out here on the side.
It eventually will have a seal added to it to make a watertight seal in the sink.
The heart of a disposer is the motor.
The motor turns the shaft, which turns the grinding components and makes the disposer function.
So that's what you're doing here, making a shaft.
Yes, it is.
We make all of our own shafts, and we consume two and a half miles of bar stock every day.
Wow.
This machine threads the shaft, cuts it to length,
then it goes through a grinder, which gives it a uniform outside diameter and a nice clean finish.
Now to turn that shaft, we need a rotor.
Here you see our rotors being heated up to 900 degrees.
That expands the inside diameter.
We then take that rotor and place it over that shaft.
Once it's assembled over the shaft, cold water cools it and shrinks it on the shaft for a very tight seal.
Perfect.
Let me show you where we are in the process.
All right.
We've seen the shaft being made.
We've seen the rotor assembled to the shaft, but we need one more component to make the motor—a stator assembly.
Now I know the stator has all these electrical windings, and when electricity is applied, it'll actually make that rotor spin.
Yes, it will.
If we put that in, we now have a rotating shredder plate.
Okay.
So when that happens, it's going to start breaking down the food and driving it to the outside, up against this stationary
shredder ring, and it operates much like a cheese grater in your home.
It's ground up and comes out the drain.
Now we're ready for assembly.
These units are coming back from the paint department.
They're part of the nearly six million units that we make in this factory every year.
Six million in this one building?
That's correct.
That is some serious disposal, Larry.
It sure is.
Now I want to show you some things we do to make the disposal quiet.
We wrap the unit in this insulating foam.
That's really heavy, isn't it?
Yes, it is.
We wrap both the top and the bottom.
We also have this anti-vibration mount.
All right, so no vibration from the motor comes up to the sink with this right here.
That is correct.
And we have this tailpipe coupler, which isolates the pipe downstream.
So no vibration to the pipe.
That is correct.
That's great too.
Now we're going to put it in the trim shell, and it's nearly ready for packaging and shipping.
Our last stop is the Reliability Lab, where our motto is "You make it, we break it." Oh, that's a place I could work, I think.
So we're just in time for lunch, it looks like.
A little anti-pasto here.
These are mixed food loads that will be ground in the disposers.
We randomly pull off the line for routine reliability lab testing.
So potatoes.
We got watermelon, some tufties, some celery.
That would be tough.
And what is this?
What do these guys got?
We also grind frozen steer rib bones to pass this test.
The disposer must grind 35 pounds of bones.
So you you don't mind putting bones on a disposer?
Not at all.
In fact, the bones help clean out the stationary grind ring and make it more efficient.
Really?
So you're recommending it?
Yes.
はい。
Well, then I'm afraid to ask about this.
What are these?
These are pine cubes that we also grind.
We have to pass six pounds of these pine cubes along with the 35 pounds of bones.
That'll keep you regular.
Yes, it will.
What are you monitoring in here?
We're monitoring run time and number of on-off cycles.
We're very concerned about product quality, so we put our products through a wide variety of tests.
All right.
よし。
So here's our pine block.
So we ready to grind them up?
Yes, we are.
All right, so down below you got a sieve down here, so you can see the wood pulp.
You know, considering we're grinding up wood, this is pretty quiet.
You know what, guys?
This might be the only woodworking tool that Norm doesn't have.
A little woodworking in the kitchen wouldn't hurt.
Larry, thanks so much for the tour.
It was great.
It's been our pleasure.
Out here in the back of the house, you can see where the details of the house really start to come together.
This is the master bathroom, and this is a new dormer that was put in.
This center window on the inside is flanked by two medicine cabinets, left and right.
So on the outside, it was dressed up with this paneling.
And look up there—a little bit of a roof overhang and those decorative corbels made to look like rafter tails.
Same look as on the front of the house, except down here it was brought down in size a little bit to match the scale.
And from this window, you get a beautiful view of the standing seam copper roof.
One of those nice details, Tommy.
A copper roof.
Sure is.
So you've got some panels here.
Did you fabricate these?
No, I had them fabricated in a tin shop.
All right.
So where do we get started?
Well, right here, Kevin.
We put a copper drip edge around the perimeter of the roof.
Mm-hmm.
Now on the panel, I had what's called a double fold made on the bottom, which will lock around the drip edge.
Gotcha.
On one side, I have a single bend at a 90 degree.
On the other side, I have a double fold, which will drop over the single bend.
All right, is this one ready to set in?
Sure is, Kevin.
I got a bead of caulking on the back side of the seam.
Now we're going to slide this up under the shingles.
Oh, it's actually bent, so it's got its own piece of flashing.
All one piece.
This is not going to leak.
Why not install the copper and then put the shingles on afterwards?
Looks like it'd be a little easier.
Well, it would be a little bit easier, Kevin.
But the painters, siding guys, are all working here, and I don't want them standing on this copper and denting it.
Okay, Joe.
Over a little bit.
Now down.
No, back.
Back down.
Push it down.
Up on the edge.
Now I get to pull it to me.
Now I have to pull this edge forward slightly, so I can bring it down.
Tap this side down.
now.
今。
Bring it up.
Got it.
Now see, I'll crimp this edge right tight.
Just squeeze it right in there, just a little, because now what I want to do is I want to crimp the panel together.
So I crimp it all the way up.
So just squeeze it in there, and of course there's a bead of caulk, so that's a real watertight seal.
That's right.
Now to keep the panel from lifting, I'm going to take this machine right here, which is a button machine, and I'm going to dimple the seam.
Look at that.
So no mechanical fastener.
Just squeeze it together, and it forms it.
Now it can't come up.
Boy, that is a good look.
How long is this going to last us?
A good 50 years.
And every year, it's going to look better.
Going to look better with age.
Thank you, Tommy.
The Parantes are amongst us, which means it must be time for tile.
Hey, Eric.
Hey, Joe.
Hey, Kevin.
What do you got here?
Sand and cement for the mud job that's going on the shower stall floor.
Big stage in here.
You've taken over the entire master bedroom.
Big stall.
Check it out.
Yeah, this is a huge shower.
What are its dimensions?
Five feet by eight feet.
So normally a mud job starts with the copper pan.
Ironically, we're using copper out here on the roof, but not here.
Why not?
No, Kevin.
Look at the size of this floor.
The copper pan would be huge.
Lot of work.
We've got an alternative, and it's this waterproof membrane.
We're just taking this out of the pail and painting it right to the plywood floor.
Oh, hang on a second.
You're putting this down right on the plywood?
And up the walls.
So this is going to be waterproof.
Very waterproof.
Wow.
Well, that might be the end of copper pans.
I hope so.
All right.
よし。
So on top of that mud job, and then on top of the mud job, tile.
What are you using?
We have this beautiful mosaic floor.
So this is going on the floor of the shower, right?
And then out here, it will be the same floor.
With this gorgeous border.
Oh, very nice.
Yeah, check this.
And then the the field around the perimeter.
The field around this perimeter will be a twelve by twelve stone.
So when is this coming down?
Next week.
Can't wait to see it.
Yep.
うん。
And how about you, Tommy?
What's on tap for next week?
Next week we have the garage doors and the kitchen cabinets.
You still trying to lick that garage?
Still trying to get the garage.
All right.
よし。
Well, until then, I'm Kevin O'Connor.
I'm Tom Silva.
I'm Joe Ferrante.
For this old house.
Yeah, I like this.
Do you?
そう？
This is nice.
Yeah, I like that a lot.
A lot of work.
