Oh, oh, oh.
Today on Ask This Old House, in South Dakota, I'll keep you posted on the latest in exterior lighting.
Pencil things look nice and save space, but they can take some skill to do it right.
I'll show you how to take little plants like these and turn them into art.
And it's a long plastic handle with three probes and a trigger.
What is it?
Fracking.
Oh, I almost guessed that.
I almost guessed that.
Everybody's fracking.
Everybody's fracking.
Yeah.
And so why should only oilmen get rich?
We should all frack.
This is home fracking.
Home fracking.
Today on Ask This Old House.
I'm Kevin O'Connor, and welcome back to Ask This Old House, where our guys will go anywhere across the country to answer questions about your house.
So keep your emails coming.
We'd love to hear from you.
And Richard, some of those emails are for you.
What do you got?
Plumbing.
Plumbing.
配管。
Plumbing.
配管。
Plumbing.
配管。
You know, I'd love to, but I gotta go to Delaware.
I'll be back.
You are the plumber, though, right?
I know.
I am the plumber.
All right.
I'll hold onto those because we've got plenty more on landscaping.
Roger, what you got?
Hold your hat there.
Jen's got me running around picking out some plants.
You can also use as art, and she's gonna show it to you later.
I'm off to the garden center.
Need anything?
Thanks.
Well, is that a no?
I take it that's a no.
No worries because we've got electrical questions coming over the dam.
Scott Karen, what can you do for me?
You know what?
Can you send me a text?
I think Tommy at the other end can answer the questions.
I gotta go to South Dakota.
Yeah, but I got a full inbox here, boys.
Today we're heading out over the Great Plains of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A charming little town on the Big Sioux River.
Hey, Scott.
You must be Joel.
I am.
Welcome to South Dakota.
Thank you.
It's our first time here.
We'll make it a good one.
I'm excited.
What's?
You have an electrical issue?
We do.
Just right over here.
Oh, that's convenient.
So there's this switch on the wall.
We didn't know what it did when we moved in.
Okay.
Turns out that when I press it in, it turns on the light over there on the lamp post.
Oh yeah.
Okay.
The problem is when I release the switch, the light goes out.
Do that again.
Yeah.
So I press it in, goes on.
Release it, goes off.
So looks like it's a bad switch.
Not a big deal.
We can swap that out.
Looking at this light post though, it's in pretty rough shape.
You can see the lights cracking.
Antique brass.
I don't know what that matches, but it's all rusty.
A little shaky.
It's seen its better days.
The light bulb is actually keeled over.
Well, you know what?
I think we replace the whole post.
Oh.
Just start over again.
Sounds great.
All right.
よし。
Well, let's get some tools and get that post out of there.
Sounds good.
All right.
よし。
Cool.
All right.
よし。
We've located the circuit breaker inside.
We've shut the power off.
Let's get this shrub out of the way real carefully.
We'll put it back afterwards.
There we go.
Okay.
Put it right in there.
Now let's get the post out of here.
Hold that over there.
Okay.
All right.
よし。
Let's take that away.
I'm going to pull the post now.
All right, Joel.
Here is your new lamp post.
So it's a standard three-inch diameter, and it's seven feet tall.
It'll accept any light fixture, and it's all aluminum, so it'll never rust.
Oh, that's great.
And I've brought this light fixture.
What I figured was we could match the roof lines of your house right here, and also the wrought iron railing, real clean look, is right here.
What do you think?
Oh, it's beautiful.
I think it's a great match for the house.
Great.
I just don't see a light bulb in there.
How does it light up?
There is no light bulb.
It's actually a diode.
This is it right here.
It operates on standard 120 volts, and you'll never have to change it.
And it'll give you a lot of light too.
Oh, I like that.
So that goes right in here like that.
What do you think?
Looks great.
All right, we need to get the wire up the post.
That's what this hole in the side is for.
All right, got it.
We're using a special concrete made for posts.
You pour it in the hole dry; you don't have to pre-mix it, and then you add water to activate it.
All right, that's good.
All right, Joel, we've let the concrete set for about an hour.
Give it a tug.
That's pretty sturdy.
All right, let's get this light wired right in.
All right, so this is a diffuser right here, and this will soften the LED diode real nicely.
All right, let's get the top of it put on.
All right, now let's get rid of the old switch.
This box is not to code.
Someone cut the back of it off, exposing the wood.
I've got to replace it with a weatherproof box, and while I'm at it, I'll pull a new wire up for the new switch.
Instead of using a manual switch, I'm using an astronomical time clock.
It'll automatically adjust itself as the days get longer and shorter.
It goes on at dusk and off at dawn.
You never have to touch it.
I'm going to cover it up with this weatherproof cover.
There's one more thing I want to do for you.
Most outdoor fixtures have three matching styles: a post light, a ceiling light, and a wall sconce.
I want to replace this so it matches the new post light.
Okay.
So I've brought this sconce here.
Completely matches it.
A little smaller in style, but still has an LED diode, so no light bulbs.
Nice.
All right.
よし。
Let's get this down.
Put the new one in.
Hey, Joel.
The power is back on.
What do you think of the sconce?
Looks good.
Well, wait till you see the post light.
I've gone ahead and hit the timer switch.
It's going to go on a little early, but tonight it's going to really look great.
I can't wait to see it.
Thanks for coming to South Dakota.
I had fun.
Thanks for having me.
Thanks.
Look at you.
You go all the way out there to fix the guy's switch, and instead you give him a new pole.
You give him a sconce.
You pull a new wire, and you don't just leave him with an on-off switch.
You leave him with this beauty.
Yeah, we gave him a good package.
This is a digital wall timer, and it's got a special feature.
It's an astronomical timer.
So a traditional timer might turn a light on at 6 p.m. and then off at 10 p.m.
But that doesn't always work, right?
Because in the height of summer, the sun's going down at 9 p.m.
So this is coming on too early, and in the dead of the winter, maybe it's coming on too late.
That's right.
But not this guy.
Right, and you have daylight savings time as well.
With this guy here,
we set the longitude and the latitude and the date, and what that does is it knows exactly where the sun is, so that it can adjust a little tiny little bits all through the time.
So you had it set for this gentleman to go on at dusk and off at dawn.
That's a long period of time.
Any flexibility?
Yeah, oh sure.
You can have it come on at dusk and four hours later shut off.
On at dusk and maybe six hours later shut it off.
All right.
And if I need to go to the garage and everything's off, can I just override it somehow?
You can.
Go ahead, hit that.
That's it.
Oh, beautiful.
So that's the same thing.
Let's go like this.
Good.
All right.
よし。
That trip earns us the right to check off our 45th state.
Yep.
So you want to do the honors?
うん。
Yeah.
よし。
All right.
South Dakota.
Turn it red.
Nope.
Just touch it in red.
そう。
Yep.
Here we go.
Hang on.
待って。
Wait.
Let me try my watch.
Nope.
Nope.
できた。
I got it.
いい？
Ready?
Watch.
いい？
Ready?
見た？
See that?
うん。
Yeah.
You'll figure it out.
Don't worry.
Unbelievable.
Five one.
You'll get it.
All right, guys.
Here we go.
I think you're gonna love it.
よし。
All right.
It has a power unit that plugs in.
Then attached to that is a wand with a trigger and three steel claws.
What is it?
Don't be pointing that at me.
Okay.
I know what this is because I have one on my boat.
This is a satnum.
何？
What?
A satnum.
I said that pretty clear.
Yeah.
うん。
It's a surface-to-air tuna missile.
Oh, that's nice.
Yeah.
うん。
Tuna today.
You know, we go out fishing for tuna, and they bring in some pretty big bucks.
Big money.
Yeah.
うん。
You know, I I mean, when they're near the boat, you can just line up like that and just shoot them.
But what if you got something like three or four hundred yards out there?
This sucker, you can line that up and go about four hundred yards, set the right boom, that and this missile flies off and it sticks them, kills them.
That's nice.
And then, forty-five thousand dollars later, I got myself a nice tuna.
Okay, you better believe it.
The tuna lobby's going to call.
Doubt it.
Actually, how many times have you been cooking over the grill?
You know, roasting a pig, a goat, turkey, a duck, you know, turducken.
And you're not really sure if the thing is done.
No, yeah.
With these probes right here, you stick these probes in.
Wherever, and you can actually see right here if it's done or not.
And if it isn't done, these little electrical probes right here you can just touch up the gizzards if you want to.
What does raw goat taste like?
You got to try it.
It's like sushi.
Sushi goat.
Not a temperature game.
Yes, it is.
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
You're making this stuff up.
All right.
You know, you know what this is if you know what the hottest thing is right now.
What's the hottest thing going right now?
Me.
Yeah, that's it.
Yeah, he's trending.
Fracking.
Oh, I almost guessed that.
I almost guessed that.
Everybody's fracking.
Everybody's fracking.
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
And so why should all these oilmen get rich?
We should all frack.
This is home fracking.
Home fracking.
Yeah.
You go out in your backyard.
I mean, I guarantee you, there's like the O'Connor shale sitting underneath my lawn, and you just need a little bit of what is it?
Oil, natural gas.
Yeah.
You'd be the new Jed.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Jed Clay, bubbling frag.
What the frag?
Jed O'Connor, state.
Guys, as usual, you were all horrible, absolutely horrible.
But what we have to do is we have to plug this in and let it warm up.
I'll show you how it really works.
All right, with it plugged in, filled with water, it's now up to pressure, and I can show you what it does.
Pressure, huh?
Just take, squeeze the trigger.
Oh, steam!
See, if I knew it made steam, I would have guessed a wallpaper remover in those hard-to-get spots.
And you still would have been wrong.
It actually—it actually has to do with weeds.
Normally, you get down on the knees and you pull them.
Terrible.
Or you use an herbicide to spray them.
That's brutal.
How about you cook them?
You cook them?
Yep.
そう。
You just stick this right down into the plant and cook them.
So you're killing that weed right now.
It's dying.
Looks about the same.
Wow, Jen, look at you sprucing up our barn here, huh?
Well, you need a little greenery inside, Kevin.
Boy, greeny that you're hanging on the wall.
How cool is that?
We've gone vertical here.
What am I looking at here?
These some sort of cacti?
They're could be in the similar family, but they are succulents.
They do really well inside.
They're durable.
They have a fleshy inside.
People don't like the water, right?
No, I don't.
So these don't require much water, and that's why they're great to put in a frame and bring inside.
Okay.
Because this is a piece of artwork.
It sure is.
So did you buy that or plant that?
This one we bought planted.
Oh, check this out, right?
So this one here comes with a hook, so you're just ready to hang this right on the wall.
Exactly.
Look at that.
A couple others.
You planted it in sort of a bird cage, and this one right here is in like a ceramic log.
Very cool.
So, would you like to plant our own?
I would.
Yeah.
うん。
What do you got?
Because over here we got this kit.
Instead of buying them already planted, it's a frame, right?
Yep.
そう。
Picture frame.
Got all these slats in here.
They're kind of at an angle, and we fill them all with soil.
Right.
Plant them up, and then when it comes time for watering, there's a water reservoir right here.
Very cool.
Pour that in the top.
It'll trickle down, and then at the bottom, there's a cork.
So you could either let the water sit there, but I would recommend holding a cup underneath to let it drain.
That is cool.
We ready to plant it?
Absolutely.
I'm all in.
So we're just going to fill these up halfway with succulent soil mix, and that's a mixture of compost, limestone, and peat moss.
It's just lighter than potting soil.
Okay.
All right.
よし。
So let's get planting here.
All right.
よし。
We got to think about our design.
Do we want to go freeform?
Do you want to put them in straight rows?
I want to do what you tell me to do.
All right.
よし。
Let's do it.
Let's just kind of—you kind of can't go wrong.
These are all little baby plants.
Yeah.
うん。
And they all look great together.
Okay.
So you pull them out like that, and then you pick a slot.
I'm going to put two or three in each hole, and you like to pack them pretty tight.
So as they fill in, they'll look nice and full.
I like that.
What's this whole operation going to cost me?
About a hundred bucks for the plants and roughly a hundred for the frame.
Whew!
But we can make our own.
You could get some wood, square, rectangle, and there you have it—your own frame.
Nice.
Always have a marker or something to push the edges in, so it secures the plant.
So when it goes vertical, it's not going to fall out.
So we just want to give the plants a very good soaking, thoroughly, so the roots can start getting established and the plants can start growing.
Nice.
Plays them right up.
Yep.
うん。
All we have to do is elevate it, so it starts the direction of draining properly.
Mm-hmm.
And remember the cork at the bottom.
Sure.
Sending all the water that way.
All right.
よし。
And then how long until these things are up on the wall?
I give it at least two or three days, and then we could put them up on the wall.
Great.
Nice job.
Awesome.
Well, welcome to Delaware, Richard.
Why?
Thank you.
Nice to be here.
Beautiful little house you got.
Oh, thank you.
We uh, we've been here about seven years now.
All right.
Really works out for us.
We really love the neighborhood.
All right.
And you only got one bathroom in this beautiful house.
We do.
We have one bathroom.
And currently, what we are finding is that we have a problem with the sink.
Oh, look at this!
So this is a pedestal sink, and you can see a crack right here.
You know, these are made out of vitreous china, and any china with impact can crack like this.
Sure.
People think they can repair them with epoxy, but it really looks like the Dickens.
You have a choice.
We can actually replace this pedestal, or think about a vanity right here for a little bit of storage.
I think we want to stick with the pedestal.
It really leaves it a little bit more open, being a small bathroom.
Yeah, I think that vanity would actually choke off pretty good against here.
Right.
All right.
よし。
So let's get started.
We'll get the old one out.
Shut off the hot and the cold.
All right.
Just open that faucet.
Be sure the shut-off valves hold tight.
Sure thing.
Both sides.
Okay.
了解。
Good.
よし。
So I want to break this connection right here on the hot supply.
When I do, I'm going to use this open-end wrench.
What I want to do is to be sure as I loosen the nut.
That I at least hold back with my hand on this valve, because if I do this, I don't want to put pressure inside the wall, because we would then end up with full city water pressure in the face.
Oh, that wouldn't be not good.
Pat, this is a tough to work around.
There's not a lot of wrench swing room.
Okay, let me see.
There's going to be a little bit of water.
See it?
Just the water that sits in this short pipe.
You can hear the air coming in.
Yep.
Good, not too bad.
Let me just jump in here and get the other side.
Sure.
Okay, so there is the hot and the cold water connections that're broken.
Now I have a drain connection right there, and I'll use a pair of pliers to loosen the nut right here, counterclockwise, lefty loosey.
That's tough.
That's a tight one.
Now I'm glad.
Sometimes these old threaded pieces in the wall can break off, and then that is not good.
Okay.
よし。
The drain connection.
All right, so we've got our waste and our water connections broken.
Now the only thing left holding this sink into the building are these two lag screws up high here.
So I just have to loosen them with a socket set.
Now it is free, but before we move it, I want to release that cocking.
So I'll let you cut that carefully.
Just score it right along the back side.
Sure.
Careful.
Okay.
よし。
Yeah, that's good.
All right.
よし。
So just take that.
Now lift this straight up and away.
Go up, up, up, up, up.
Now there's water in the trap.
Well, hold on one second.
Sure.
Okay.
よし。
Go ahead, right up and over.
Thank you.
Okay, Joe.
Why don't you clean up that floor for me?
All right.
Here is your new pedestal.
There's the base.
Here's the bolts.
It's right on top of it, right here.
That'll look great.
You know, people love pedestals, but they are not the plumber's best friend.
It's a really tight little space to work right here.
You actually have to make sure the drain comes exactly out of the wall in the right location, so you can't be moving the pedestal any way you want on the wall.
Right.
And now it's also all exposed.
You know, this is what the drain looked like on the old one.
Now you're looking at it from the side.
That's really unacceptable to me, seeing the plastic.
What I'm going to do is step up a little bit with a chrome piece that'll make that look nice and sweet coming through the side.
The other thing is it's really a tight little space to work.
So actually, I want to do as much of the work as I can out here, and then put the pedestal into place.
Just grabbing that faucet box, would you?
Sure thing.
So now you can see our hot and cold supply comes up to here.
The handles let the water come down through these.
They come together to the spout and come out to the faucet.
Now you get a really good chance to understand how the drain assembly works.
Now there's a stopper up here inside your sink, and I'll put that down through the sink, and it's going to sit right in here.
Well, we need some way to actuate that stopper to go up and down.
So this will fit down into here, and this will allow us to articulate that stopper up and down.
But then you need a way to convey that energy up to the top of the sink.
So now.
さて。
Here's the lift rod right here, and now we'll adjust this linkage to the right height
so that when you do lift that rod, it makes that stopper go up and down.
Great, good.
All right, let me set the base.
Hold on, let me just get.
I want to guide it in.
Okay, bring it in.
Okay, just drop it down now.
Careful.
Yeah.
うん。
Okay, let's slide that in.
There we go.
Good.
Now I can tighten this nut.
Okay.
はい。
Okay.
はい。
Now how's that look?
And look at this.
This bell flange will make it all disappear.
Looks a little better, doesn't it?
Looks really great.
All right.
よし。
So now I do have to make two more lag connections up here in an impossible place.
I'll be back.
Now we connect the water supplies, and I put the braided connections long enough that I could do the twist.
Because if you don't know this, you will kink it, and then you'll call me later.
All right, water is back on.
Joel, give it a try.
All right, cold water, hot water.
Really like the sink too.
Yeah, it looks great.
But I can really understand why you don't like pedestal sinks now.
You know, admittedly, I don't.
But now you know how to do it.
So if you need it in the future, you're on your own.
All right, everybody appreciate it.
All right, be well.
Thanks.
Next time on Ask This Old House in Minneapolis, I'll replace an attic pull-down stairway and make it more energy efficient.
I'm going to give you a few tips on how to pick out the right torch.
See the difference?
This is like a jet engine.
That's right.
But on smaller fittings, it can actually be too hot, and will completely transform this kitchen over a weekend for less than five hundred dollars.
All right, there you go.
It's great.
I love it.
