Well, good morning.
I'm Kevin O'Connor, and welcome back to This Old House, and welcome back to the 110-year-old shingle style that we are renovating.
One of the signature features of the shingle style house is its wrap-around porch, and the Victorians built those to capture those coastal New England breezes.
So they spent a lot of time living on their porch.
Well, it turns out, apparently we live a little differently today.
This is probably the first time that we know where we have a homeowner who is a fencer.
In fact, he was an Olympic fencer, and remarkably, he has a brother who was an Olympic fencer.
Hey, Paul.
Hey, Kevin.
How are you?
All right.
How are you?
Good.
Let me introduce you to my brother, John.
Hey, John.
Hi, Kevin.
Up here to help me work out and break in my new porch.
Well, terrific.
Hey, you guys are really serious about this.
Oh, and you got the medals to prove it.
Yeah, Kevin, I was second place in the national championships.
But I was a national champion.
Kevin, I was second place in the Pan Am Games.
I had a gold medal in the Pan Am Games.
Kevin, that's nothing though.
I was 1988, the Olympic team in Seoul, Korea.
That's great, Paul.
I was also on the Olympic team in 1992 in Barcelona.
I can feel a real strong sibling rivalry going on here.
So how did you guys actually get into this sport?
You know, when I was younger, watching the movies, the Pirates and the Swashbucklers, and seeing Errol Flynn going up and down the staircases, it just looked like a lot of fun.
Yeah, yeah, but that doesn't really go on anymore.
This is really serious sport.
It's one of the original sports of the modern Olympics.
Fencing gyms and open spaces like this around the world.
All right, well, let's get back to it here on the porch.
Fence.
始め！
Well, I don't know.
Growing up in a household where you had to settle your childhood disputes with a sword.
Well, anyway, we have reached the part of the project where we have got very little time and a lot of work to do.
We've got about a month and a half left, and this is where Tommy really starts turning up the heat on his guys.
And I heard it can get kind of ugly.
Let's see if he's here yet.
Tommy.
Tom Silva.
All right, all right, all right, all right, all right.
Please, please.
Now you're ready to get back to work.
Yeah, boss.
All right, let's get it done.
Nestled underneath this beautiful European beech tree is our garage, and there's a lot of structural work that's been done to this building, which can't be appreciated because it's totally hidden.
However, what's going on on this facade is going to be in plain view, and there's been changes since the original garage.
We started with two overhead doors.
The architect and the homeowners wanted this door.
We call it the people door, and with a detached garage, that makes a lot of sense because you don't have to open the big doors to get in and out of the garage.
They also wanted custom doors to mimic a carriage house look.
So instead of a standard overhead door, we have these.
And with this hardware and the shape and design of the door, it mimics doors that would open out.
However, they are overhead doors.
They're also custom made, and representing the company that made them for us is Pat Losey.
Hi, Pat.
Hi, Norm.
So you get a lot of calls for custom doors.
We do.
Yeah, we we have more calls today than ever before because people want to match the exterior elements of their home.
Right.
Now you have a standard line of custom doors, but we sent you a plan.
Ours is very specific, but no problem, right?
No problem.
We can create virtually any door you have in mind.
Just send us a drawing.
Now the door itself, people want performance, not only just the look.
That's right.
So how is this actually made?
This door is actually made using a luan panel on the on the interior.
Right.
We have polystyrene foam on the inside of the door.
Right.
With a luan exterior, and then on top of that, we put an MDO material on the exterior.
Right, so it's a sandwich of wood and insulation, and then the MDO is actually a plywood that has a paper facing on it that takes paint very well.
A lot of cities use it for street signs because it really holds up.
That's correct.
It's it's very durable.
And I see you have some hardware here.
We saw we saw the handles on the outside.
We do, and we have these decorative strap hinges, which again give the give the old carriage house style look on the exterior of the door, which really dress it up.
Let's take another look at it from the outside.
It has some nice features.
We've got these true divided light windows, a nice series of those across this top panel.
The overlay with this this look of a brace works well, and I like the fact these joints are nice and tight.
I mean, it really does feel like a carriage house door, especially with this groove right down the middle.
The door is really well constructed.
Right.
Yeah.
Now these can get very heavy, I know, because there's a lot of wood built into a door like this.
Yes, they can.
This particular door weighs nearly 500 pounds.
Wow.
So you really have to have a good system to operate the door.
That's right.
In this case, we use galvanized torsion springs.
Right, that big heavy spring up there.
That's right, and it really what it does is help counterbalance the door.
Right.
And this particular spring lasts almost fifty percent longer than standard oil tempered springs.
Right.
So the point is, is that you should be able to open this door with one hand, very easily.
Wow, look at that.
You really don't need the opener.
Right.
The opener is just the means to open and close it, but really that spring is doing all the work.
That's right.
Well, you know they look great, and it's going to be an important feature because when our homeowner and guests pull in the driveway, it's the first thing they're going to see.
It's your real front door.
All right.
Thanks a lot.
Renovating a Victorian can be a challenge because generally they are a series of individual rooms.
Our homeowners wanted an open floor plan, and that's what we've been doing over the last several months.
Now the family room is open to a dining area, to the kitchen.
Now when you can see everything, you can't have just an ordinary kitchen.
You want a dramatic kitchen, and look at this beautiful custom cabinetry.
This wall actually looks more like a piece of furniture.
It's got carving along the top, and behind these doors there's actually a refrigerator.
Over here we have a wall oven.
On this wall some upper cabinets,
base cabinets, and over here instead of seeing what you would normally see a stainless steel range hood, it's all concealed by a piece that looks like furniture.
Even has a mantel shelf on it.
On this wall more wall cabinets for the sink base, and one of the big features of this kitchen is this large island.
Now all the installation has been done by Patrick Malone.
Hey doing, Norm?
You're doing a great job.
Thank you.
Any particular challenges here?
It's in any hundred-year-old house or older home.
Floors are out of level, walls are out of level, and you have to fit everything just to make it look right.
Now I noticed when the cabinets came, they had feet on the base cabinets.
Yes, adjustable.
Well, you got to love these.
No shim shingles.
You just lower it or raise it as needed until you're right there.
That's right.
Now you're on some of the final steps, which is the base trim here, which goes around the island.
People don't realize that this takes a lot of work to do it right.
Yes, it does.
It takes a lot of hours from that outside corner to this inside corner.
Right.
Is mostly yesterday.
Right.
You got mitered corners, and you're carefully scribing it to the floor.
Correct.
I'd love to see your technique.
Okay.
In here, it starts with the inside miter.
All right.
So you got the inside miter cut.
Now we need to make sure that it's level.
All right.
Oh, and you're going to measure because you know the top of the island is level.
So if the measurements are equal, you'll be level.
Correct.
Nice tip.
Gotta go up a little.
Get that in there.
All right.
よし。
How's that?
Perfect.
All right.
よし。
Now I can mark my outside miter.
Ready to cut.
Good.
Perfect.
All right.
よし。
With it shimmed level again, you're ready to scribe.
Correct.
Is that the scribes?
To the height of the difference of the pieces in the back.
Right.
And that's going to tell you how much to remove off the bottom.
Correct.
So it'll fit the floor perfectly.
Make your scribe.
Now I noticed that you put a back bevel on this, so it's really the outer edge which is going to touch the floor.
Correct.
You stayed away from the line.
You're going to touch that up with something.
Yes, the block plane.
All right.
よし。
Looks good.
Nice job.
Perfect fit.
Thanks for all your hard work.
I can't wait to see it all finished.
Thank you.
Our front hallway is separated from the entry vestibule by this wall and its oak door with this single glass light.
And if you recall, a beautiful stained glass window that went right here.
Now this window is still being restored by our stained glass designer Jim Anderson, but today he is bringing back its oak frame.
And the reason that's coming back so soon is because we want the new oak to match the old oak that is all throughout this vestibule.
And there is lots of it, and we are going to great lengths to sort of bring it back and restore it.
You look here at the top of this window, this molding.
This is all sort of old and dirty, but look what it looks like when it is cleaned up.
See how that detail pops right there.
And we ordered custom windows.
These are solid oak muntin bars right here around each one of those lights.
Now when we got our hands on this house, Tommy, this room was just a single room, but that wasn't always the case.
No, it wasn't always the case.
Originally to the house there was a wall that divided this space up with an entryway.
So you put that back.
I put it back.
And think that there was a there was a couple of clothes poles here where people would hang their coats up, and you'd always see them.
So we decided to make a closet here and paint the doors to match the wall to kind of hide the space.
Okay.
But after looking at the space and all this oak trim, we decided that we may change something.
I mean, we have a Masonite door here that's primed and ready for paint.
It has a pine core.
Look at this little bead detail.
This is just a pine detail, Masonite panel.
Doesn't really go with the oak that's in this room though.
Well, after looking at it, look at this front door here, Kevin.
This is beautiful oak door.
Look at this molding that goes around the panels.
We decided that we would take our Masonite doors and turn them into oak.
Let me show you how we do it.
All right, here's our primed Masonite door, five panel, and we want to simply take this door and cover it
with this oak veneer that's ten millimeters thick.
Okay, so we're gonna glue that down on here, and I guess I can see how it's easy to put it on the stiles and rails because these are flat.
But this beaded detail right here, you're gonna have to pop that out, and when you do, how you gonna make that look like oak?
Well, I actually can't pop this out, Kevin.
This is part of the stile and rail system.
So when they mill up the door, this is all milled with the stiles and the rails.
All right, so even harder.
How do you get this out?
Well, I simply made up a template.
I'm gonna route that out.
Let me show you.
I mark center lines on each of the panel on the stiles and the rail.
I've also marked center lines on my template.
I line up the two and clamp it in place.
Okay.
Now I'm ready to cut with the router, and I've set my router up with a half inch straight cutting bit, and to follow the template, I'm gonna use a templating guide.
Simply drop my router in.
I set my depth.
Now I just move the guide over.
Now the bit is round, and when you come to the corner, it cuts a round corner.
So to true that up, I'm simply going to take my chisel, hold it into the corner flat, straighten it out.
Now I'm going to sand off some of the primer on the door so the veneer will adhere to the door.
With our panels, stiles, and rails all sanded, now we're ready to cut some veneer.
A door is made up with stiles and rails, and the stiles run all the way from the top to the bottom.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut two stiles for each door.
The stiles on our door are four and a half inches wide.
I want to cut the veneer five inches wide, making it a little bit wider than the stile on the door.
Drop my straight edge on my mark, cut it with a utility knife.
Now we're going to adhere the veneer to the door, and we're going to use a contact cement to do that.
And contact cement actually sticks to itself, so we have to spray it on the backside of the veneer and the face of the door.
Once it is dry to the touch, then we'll stick them together.
Now we're ready to spray the door.
Now that the glue is dry to the touch, we're ready to start adhering the veneers.
And I label the back of the veneer with a P.
That's for panel, and we'll start right there.
Now once I position this down, I cannot remove it or move it.
I only get one shot at it.
Okay, just roll it with a j roller.
Always start in the middle and work out any air bubbles.
All right, so now just roll that off.
We get the router and trim it up.
Using the trim router and a flush cutting bit, I will trim off the excess veneer.
Back when this was a masonite door, there was a molding detail that ran around the perimeter of the paneling, and we cut that out with a router.
Now we're going to replace it with a better molding detail.
And you have to use oak because you want to match the veneer you just put on.
Exactly.
And to get that oak, we actually have some leftover flooring that we used in the kitchen that happens to be white oak.
Well, what a great reuse of material.
Well, what I did is I ripped down some strips the size of the molding, and I ran it through the molding machine.
I actually had to have some knives made anyway for some of the paneling detail around the house that I'm going to be using.
So this profile right here matches a profile that's already in the house.
Exactly.
Well, that is a nice touch.
So now we just place the molding in the panel, and you can see the rest of the door.
Well, that is a nice look, and we're ready for stain.
Yep, it's going to stain just like an oak door.
And it's going to look great in that entry foyer.
Nice job, Tom.
Thanks.
Six months ago, this bedroom had no access to the back of the house, which was a sleeping porch.
In fact, this was an exterior window.
So we reclaimed this space so that we could make a master suite that included a walk-in closet right here and a sumptuous bathroom right next to it.
Now that was a lot of work.
We had to cut out all the old floor joists.
We had to put in new engineered lumber.
We had to level those and lay a floor so that Tommy and his crew could build us this a beautiful bathroom.
We have got some custom cabinetry all the way from Canada.
On top of this, we'll go a piece of engineered stone.
The only piece of man-made stone in the bathroom.
The rest of it all natural and being laid by Joe Ferrante.
Hey Kevin.
Hey Joe.
So you're making some good progress in that shower stall.
Oh yeah, we got this shower stall flooring, the mosaic floor.
Mm-hmm.
It's all pitched to the drain.
And then today we got the base perimeter.
That's called the skirting.
It's stone.
Okay.
了解。
And then you've got some more stone going out here in the main part.
of the bathroom, a couple different types.
What are you using?
Well, what we did out here is we started with this beautiful mosaic border,
and then to it we came up with this beige marble mosaic.
Yep, comes in sheets.
Yep.
そう。
And you've told me before that your whole idea here was to sort of create a stone carpet.
Yeah, looks like a carpet, doesn't it?
Perimeter here, field here.
Yep.
そう。
All right, and you are starting to, or actually, you're continuing to lay some of that perimeter right there.
That's right.
I noticed that this also comes in sheets.
On the back, you've got some webbing and adhesive, and then on the front, it's actually covered in plastic.
I presume this is to hold it together.
Right.
はい。
Both sides are made to hold that mosaic together.
The underside with the mesh mounting, and then the face with the cellophane.
After we've installed the border.
The next day, we'll come back, peel off that cellophane, and we'll grout.
So this actually has to sit in the thin set for a day before you can take the cellophane off.
That's right.
All right, thin set on the Durock.
Thin set on the Durock.
I'm using a quarter by quarter notch trowel.
Take a little bit, give it a little back buttering.
So this is to ensure some good adhesion to make sure.
Yeah, you see all the small stones.
Yeah.
All those little stones.
I want to make sure they grab.
So we'll get that done.
Okay.
Now I'll just I'm going to press this into place.
I'm not going to beat them down with a mallet and a block.
And why is that?
Well, you see all the again with these small stones.
Just make sure that they make that contact to the floor.
And then we'll have the.
Here's your line right here.
Yep.
So it's really all about that good adhesion, making sure that nice good connection, so it sets up.
I want to try to get as much of a 100% bond as possible.
And then from this border mosaic, we're going to jump right back in there on that cream mosaic and continue with the field.
Model that for us right there.
Right.
はい。
You're going to tuck that in there and complete your stone carpet.
That's right.
Now what have we got out here on the perimeter?
It's a whole different kind of stone.
You've got a sample right here for us.
What type of stone is this?
That's a marble that has a very slight uneven surface to it.
Feels very nice, doesn't it?
With the honing.
Yeah, that's a honed finish.
And then it's sealed and waxed.
So this is actually good for a a floor that's going to get wet.
You're not great underfoot.
Same thing with the mosaic.
All right, Joe.
Well, your master tile it is really starting to come together.
I'm going to get out of your way.
All right.
Maybe we'll come back to see how the grout goes down.
Sure.
Thanks.
With the cabinets installed, it's time to measure for countertops.
And it's not just a matter of a sketch and a few measurements.
We need very accurate templates.
You don't want to cut a piece of expensive stone incorrectly.
In the past, we've seen strips of plywood hot glued together, forming a template that goes back to the shop.
But things are changing, aren't they, Ken?
They sure are, Norm.
We have this stylus here that you can place up against any wall surface, any surface whatsoever.
Takes a point, goes back into our machine, and we can email it right directly into the shop.
Wow, that's fantastic.
Digital technology comes to countertops.
Now Donna Venegas, our kitchen designer.
The last time we saw you was in the showroom, and this was just an idea on paper.
What do you think?
I think it looks great.
Yeah.
Now you're here to talk about stone or the countertops with us.
Yeah.
This is the honed quartz surface we'll be using for the perimeter.
Mm-hmm.
Now you also referred us to a fabricator down in Pennsylvania for our end grain teak top for the island, and that was a fantastic trip.
I got to see him make it.
This has a very ornate edge.
What are you going to do with the stone?
We're actually going to use the quartz at an inch and a quarter thickness, and then we're going to take a cue from the top portion of the Burmese teak top.
Okay.
So just a little drop down and a round over.
That's right.
The countertop material is pretty understated.
It is.
The idea behind that is that it really play a supporting role, and that it allow the tile to take center stage.
Yeah.
This tile is very ornate.
It has sort of a Moroccan look to it.
So you've got some tiles that are going to be on a diagonal.
What's this for?
This is actually the field tile.
It comes in sheets at twelve by twelve, and that's going to be installed above the border.
Wow, that's going to look great.
You know, every day this kitchen gets closer to completion, and you're going to come back and take us through the final tour when it's all done.
Absolutely.
All right, that is an interesting look.
Isn't it gorgeous?
Roger, given today's weather, it's a bit curious that we're talking about irrigation.
But why not?
The plants are in.
The lawn is next, and once that's done, I guess you got to protect your investment, right?
We do, Kevin.
We have large plants.
We move from the front yard out here to hide the sport court in the neighbor's yard.
We have plantings all the way around the perimeter, and in the middle, we're going to have a big swath of lawn.
And that's because our homeowner Paul wanted to make sure that the kids had a yard to play in.
That's right.
All right, and in front of your beautiful new stone wall, you've put down a line of.
I forget what these are.
Viburnum.
Yes, thank you.
Now that's part of the problem we have here watering.
We have small plant beds and a big lawn here, and they each require different amounts of water, and that's why we brought along our irrigation specialist Ed Mashan.
You remember Ed from our Cambridge project?
Sure do.
Ed, good to see you again.
Good to see you.
All right.
さて。
So what are we doing to water our lawn?
First off, well, we're using rotary spray heads here.
Oh, okay.
So there they are.
They just pop right up out of the ground.
They pop right up.
They rotate, covering the area evenly.
Now, Kevin, these are 180 degree heads, meaning they throw 180 degrees forward.
They're not soaking the wall.
In the middle, we'll use 360 heads, and we even have 90s for in the corner.
So throw the water just where you need the water.
Exactly.
Terrific.
And I guess you don't need as much water on this line of viburnums, which is why I see a drip system right here.
That's actually a pressure-compensating drip line.
Ooh, what is that?
Sounds technical.
Well, I have a sample here.
It has emitters here.
They're every twelve inches.
Yeah, okay.
And they're part of a baffle system that keeps the emitters from getting clogged.
So we like drip systems because it throws less water where we need less water, right?
Exactly.
Right, and the entire drip system runs on a pressure reducer and filter that controls the system, keeps the sediment out, and makes it run evenly.
You've got a head end here to show us.
Right, right in here we have the control valves for the lawn and the filter and pressure regulator right here.
The water comes out into the drip line that goes down right into the root system of the plants where we want it, and then we just cover it with some mulch.
So it sounds like you guys are giving quite a bit of thought to saving water.
We have.
Yeah, another way to save water is with the rain sensor right here.
This rain sensor actually takes the rain in through the top.
And expands the cork discs inside.
So these swell and expand.
You tell me that shuts down the system.
Right.
And the longer it rains, the longer the system will stay off.
Oh, terrific!
I like it.
So it sounds like you've thought of everything.
It.
All right.
Well, thank you very much.
Thank you.
All right.
So Roger, at this point, I guess all we need is a break in the weather and a little launch.
Yeah.
And hopefully next time we'll be rolling out the sod.
All right.
Well, next time I know we're going to be putting kitchen countertops in, and Tom Silva is going to be replicating the wainscoting in our house.
So until then, I'm Kevin O'Connor and I'm Roger Cook for This Old House.
Boy, I can't wait to roll out the sod.
It beats wainscoting any day.
I can't wait to get out of the mud.
What's going on back here?
