As Japan's population declines, what role will foreigners play?
And in that context, I think the most important thing is for the government to discuss without running away from how to build a society where foreigners and Japanese people can coexist.
At the steel company in India that I covered, the environment for foreigners was very carefully maintained.
When I talked to the people actually working there, everyone was very lively and deeply trusted the company.
It is precisely because of this relationship that they maintain a connection with the company even after returning to their home countries.
Some have even started Japanese language schools or specified skilled worker schools in their home countries,
and from there, they introduce new talent. This kind of virtuous cycle was being created.
I felt that this kind of sustainable cycle, built while respecting each other's cultures, will become even more important in the future.
Now, please imagine what would happen if foreign workers disappeared from our daily lives.
Looking at just a limited number of industries like convenience stores, the restaurant industry, nursing care, and construction sites, I think our lives would become unsustainable.
Well, while the government acknowledges the labor shortage, on the other hand, they are making the conditions for foreigners to live in Japan increasingly strict. It's like a contradiction,
isn't it? From the perspective of foreigners, feeling that they are not welcome in Japan
is only natural, I think.
Well, looking at examples from overseas, coexistence is
by no means easy. But just because it's difficult, should we give up? Is there any other choice? I want the government to properly face reality.
