today an Earthquake Early Warning went off and
I was surprised. Yes. If an earthquake of that scale really

introduce some listener mail, though we haven't been able to introduce much
Yes, we've received listener mail, thank you very much. Thank you. Yes, podcast name Nekone-san, yes, hello, from the weekly...
I learned about Behind the News from the announcement and listen with great interest every time
Thank you very much. Thank you very much. In the recent episode about the large-scale high school student demonstrations in France,
I heard that funding is being diverted to military spending and there isn't enough budget for schools,
and I thought that even in a society like France where citizens' rights are valued, they have similar problems to Japan
In Japan too, military spending keeps increasing, teachers are in short supply due to harsh working conditions,
and I hear that national universities can't even afford repairs for things like leaking roofs
Also, in terms of demonstrations by young people, although the demands differ from this case in France,
in Japan too, since around this spring, anti-war demonstrations by young people have been held frequently
Listening to the story about France naturally turned my attention to things inside Japan

Why is Japan's military spending increasing?
Why have young people who never used to go to demonstrations started to become interested in them, and about the history of demonstrations in Japan, etc.
I thought you might have covered those, so I'd love to hear such behind-the-scenes stories
I look forward to the show, that's what we received. Yes, thank you. Yes, about young people in Japan, right, I covered in 2015
when the security legislation was
being developed, well, I did quite a few features, and at that time a movement of young people joining demonstrations spread. That's right. So, through SNS
such information spread quite a bit, yes, well,
I wonder if more young people who are interested have started joining demonstrations. That's right. At that time there were so-called sound demos, playing music or rapping while
holding demonstrations, that kind of
culture existed
Well, student
demonstrations, like the 1960 Anpo protests, that's right. The 1960 Anpo protests, and such things have been around for a long time, but
around the time of the HIV-tainted blood scandal
there was something like the precursor to those sound demos,
and from there
I was watching it thinking it was scary, but on the other hand, as you just said, Kamon-san, the way it spreads through SNS, that
in Egypt,
when the Mubarak regime
There was a time when a government fell, and at that time too, young people's protests spread rapidly on social media,
and that eventually grew into a huge movement,
and, well, the long-standing
dictatorship fell, but well, over there it was quite
well, it was life-threatening, snipers came out and such,
in that sense, well, Japan's
demonstrations are still
being held peacefully, I feel.
Right, yes. One more

Thinking about those who were sacrificed and their bereaved families makes me very sad,
and at the same time, I felt we need to think carefully about why the people who carried out terrorism at the cost of their own lives
were driven that far.
I felt that hearing about experiences at such past scenes is unique to this podcast by you two veterans.
I would love to hear more of these projects that could be called ultra-recent modern history.
I'm looking forward to future episodes. Thank you. Thank you. That was Mr. Ito's report, but talking about the 9/11 attacks
while looking back on that time, well,
there are things we can talk about now because it's now, or different perspectives we can have now, so when we get the chance again,
Yes. This time we asked Mr. Ito, our senior colleague,
and I think it's a good opportunity to hear stories from seniors who have lots of varied experience. Yes.
We've also received other emails. We've received questions and such,
but there are parts we haven't been able to fully research yet, we're really rushed every day. So we'd like to research properly before answering,
so we hope to
introduce them again soon. Thank you. Yes.
And this time, yes, from Europe who came to Japan,
a notable former prime minister
we're going to dig deep into.
This behind-the-scenes story is about former Finnish Prime Minister Marin, who visited Japan this week,
について
about her,
we're going to tell you. Yes.
TBS covered her on several programs,
and on the nighttime News 23
program, caster Ayaka Ogawa held a dialogue with her, yes, it became quite an interesting dialogue, you were talking about the content. Yes.
And I'd like to hear more about this coverage report. We've invited the News 23

about that,
I'd like to hear in detail.
This is the first time we've had someone from News 23,
is that so. Yes. Yes. I'm honored. Yes, yes.
so I'd like to ask what it's like to be in charge of a nighttime news program.
Then let me introduce Yuko Watanabe's profile. She's from Kinshi-cho, Tokyo. Oh,

I lived in China for seven years, and went to high school in Shanghai. Yes. And Tsinghua University, a prestigious school. A prestigious school. After graduating, yes. Joined TBS in 2022. Mm. And after covering finance and such in the economics department for three years, you moved to News 23, so since when for 23?
Since last August, so a little over a year. Th-
in the department for three years,
when was that again. Um, since last August, so a little over a year. Th-
that's right. Yes,
high school and university were in China. Yes,
but,
what kind of life was it,
originally, in terms of roots, my mother is from Shanghai, China, so,
I, that originally, in terms of roots, my mother is from Shanghai, China, so,
Chinese culture and the language have been very familiar to me since childhood,
but well, from birth until graduating junior high I lived in Japan the whole time, so sort of as a search for my roots,
in terms of searching for my own identity,
I always had this feeling that I wanted to live in China at least once,
so deciding to just go for it in high school was what led me to go to China,
but still, to just go for it in high school,
that feels like quite a bold move,
ね
right,
between Japan and
Shanghai,
did you feel any kind of difference, I mean as a teenage girl teenager,
did you feel any kind of difference? It's completely different. Oh. After all, in China that competitive society is so,
the competition is so intense, so already,
in order to get into university, from birth,
well until high school,
graduation, really everything is for getting into university,
working backward,
parents are also enthusiastic about,
education, so,
high school is like the final sprint. Those last three years,
so, that so-called sweet-and-sour romance like Japanese high school students have,
is not allowed at all,
for those three years, it's like,
you only have three years left, so,
まあ
well,
there's no time for romance, and of course there are no club activities either, so really 24 hours, except when sleeping and eating, it's all studying,
but, well, I went there as an international student, so separate from the local,
students, I was taking classes in a different class, in what you'd call an international student,
class, so that,
watching their intense life out of the corner of my eye, thinking it looks tough,
あの
um,
at lunchtime, the cafeteria,
there's a cafeteria on campus,
but when you become a third-year high school student, even going to the cafeteria is a waste of time, so meals are brought from the cafeteria on these carts,
to the classroom, and everyone eats,
lunch in the classroom. So they can save time to study, to be able to study, within the school that kind of support, watching that,
I thought, this looks tough,
I was watching thinking it looks tough,
in high school you were surrounded by that kind of tough environment around you, but how about university,
how was it
I wonder what university life in China is like. I have an image that everyone studies really hard,
but... Yes. But on the other hand, after being freed from a life chased by studying until now,
having been freed from a life consumed by studying for years,
on the contrary, there are people who go completely wild — what they call a university debut.
like what they call a university debut in Japan, there are a lot of people who make a university debut, so it was really two extremes.
Especially since Tsinghua University is a science and engineering university,
well, there are lots of so-called stereotypical science guys there.
So somehow those
kids and, on the contrary, kids who enjoy parties every night were mixed together in both types, and I thought that was really interesting. Really,
Really,
There was even a class on romance studies. A class on romance studies.
I didn't take it, though.
I wonder what they do in it. When it comes to facing the opposite sex,
what kind of... how do you face the opposite sex? What should you be careful about? Yes. Hmm.
Hmm.
Those kinds of classes are usually over capacity and fill up in an instant. There are many. Interesting. Interesting. Well, not really.
I'm interested, though. Well, well.
Students who have kept studying until about a week ago... they don't know how to interact with people, so in order to make their debut in college,
in order to date someone, the university may be offering it as a class.
Ah. What did you study at that university?
Well, it's a bit presumptuous of me to say, but I majored in journalism.
I studied it, and
among that, I studied video-related things like documentaries and video production at university.
What is journalism studied in China like?
Is there something different from journalism studied in Japan or elsewhere?
Hmm, yes. That...
Journalism in the sense of watching power,
I don't think I learned that at least at university, looking back now, but even so,
students who had the belief that they wanted to deliver information to the world had gathered, so
to nurture talent with a spirit of journalism as much as possible within China,
for that... sorry, it's a bit hard to put into words, but.
I see, I see. Well, in journalism you make video works, and the students around you do that too, right?
At that time, when choosing a topic, for example focusing on social issues, is that done without any particular restrictions?
Like that. Yes. Restrictions on that
in my time,
there weren't any in particular, but when it came time to publish it,
for example, when uploading it to some video site, there is a review at the time of uploading, so
something would get stopped.
That did happen.
So you studied journalism at university, and became interested in TBS. Is that how it was? Yes, I've liked watching TV since I was little, so.
And, since overseas universities graduate at a different time than Japanese universities — in my case I graduated in June —
And, since overseas universities graduate at a different time than Japanese universities — in my case I graduated in June —
the job-hunting timing was a bit off from Japanese students, and there were companies that weren't recruiting,
and among them, TBS had a hiring route for students graduating from overseas universities, so through that I became interested in TBS.
and among them, TBS had a hiring route for students graduating from overseas universities, so through that I became interested in TBS.
interest.
I was fortunate to be hired — that's how it was.
And you were assigned to the news department, to the economics section, and in the economics section,

I wrote articles about Finland, and
Of course I went to Ukraine to cover Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and of course I wrote articles about NATO expansion and such

she said it sarcastically, like NATO has only expanded around Russia, didn't it
That's right. Well, after going through such a period, and she attracted a lot of attention, and I wondered if she's still serving as prime minister, but she lost the election. That's right. And then
Now she's doing things like policy advising, yes
So this time, what kind of reporting did you, Watanabe-san, do? Yes. Well, this time

News 23 covered things like that, and watching our footage I thought, huh, about various things
I thought, becoming prime minister at 34, she'd seem all glamorous and sparkling, but it seems she had a difficult upbringing and hardships. That's right. Her mother grew up in an orphanage
and gave birth to Ms. Marin quite young
Her father, well this didn't make it into the broadcast, but her father was an alcoholic

her mother took a same-sex partner, so she was raised by two women, born into a rainbow family
And she was the only one in her family to go to university
And so, her rising to become prime minister
is not a personal success story but a success of the Nordic Finnish welfare model
That's how she described herself, which was very impressive. Yeah
In other words, she's not the type who climbed up with hungry determination, but rather
by no means from a so-called wealthy family
not even from a middle-class family, but from that kind of background
herself
being able to go to university and become a politician and become prime minister, that means there's a chance for such people
and moreover
that kind of society system where you get a chance without having to struggle insanely hard, she was grateful for that. That's what it means. Yes
So that
just as she did, so that the younger generation following her will have the same kind of opportunities
to maintain the current society, just maintaining it
not only that but wanting to reform it further
that passion was what made her become a politician, she said. Yeah
And, she became interested in politics around age 20, yes. And from there she ran for office and so on, she talked about that
In her first election, only 160 votes
she got. It seems so. And she lost. Yeah
At first she started with a stumble, in that sense
Well, eventually she became prime minister, but just before that she was saying she didn't particularly want to become prime minister
that was the impression. She reflected in her book, like, do I really have to do this, but she said she wasn't ready yet
you know
ね
yeah
Yeah. That's right. At that time she was a cabinet minister. Indeed, that's right. Even so, quite a young junior minister
probably treated as such
で
and
Well, indeed, if you say she wasn't ready, she probably wasn't, you know, at the time of the election
the person who was the prime ministerial candidate
suddenly fell ill and collapsed
Well, he then returned and ended up becoming prime minister, but due to a scandal he was replaced in less than a year, and so
Perhaps the feeling that she became prime minister rather suddenly was stronger
She herself also put it in that kind of way, didn't she. Yes, that's right
And she said that she herself felt she wasn't prepared and always felt kind of scared, you know. Yes
But still, within that, even though she wasn't prepared
For now, action
She said that people learn as they take action. Yeah
That just because you're not prepared, you don't refrain from stepping forward
That by stepping forward there
There is something to be gained, that kind of message she was conveying to students and such
It felt like that. Yes, that's right. And, after all, the students who heard the talk
They had really moved expressions, good expressions on their faces. After all,
To borrow her words, hope is not something that falls from the sky
But the words that you grasp it through action really resonated very much with the students
And everyone bought the book and took it home. Yes, you know
So, while we have the chance
About what Marin talked about
We'd like to have you listen to a bit of the audio
Yes
Yes, just now in English
She spoke, but to translate it simply, she took office just a few months before the pandemic hit directly, and then she had no choice but to make urgent decisions, and
School closures
Measures and
リモート
Remote
Classes, and various such decisions she had to make
それから
And then
Also, just as they got through COVID, the Ukraine war began
Russia's full-scale invasion began, and with this Finland came to join NATO
And she had to make another historic decision, is what she said
And besides that, on education and social security, healthcare
And gender equality and such, she carried out historic reforms
She wrote this book because she wanted to properly write down and convey to everyone how those things were actually decided, what was happening
How she made those decisions
ね
You know
That desire to make that decision-making process
Transparent, I suppose that's part of it. Yes, that's right
And then she also said things like this
Yes, well, what Ms. Marin just
Said is about what
Mr. Watanabe introduced earlier, what the university student was talking about
But she said this. Hope is not something that falls from the sky and lands on your lap
Nor is it just something that is there. Hope is something we
Through our actions
Through
Create ourselves
When we take action, that action creates hope
It brings hope to ourselves, and creates hope for others as well
The title of Ms. Marin's book, "Hope in Action," this message is
Not only that we all have the possibility but also the responsibility to work for a better world, and that by taking action we create hope
That's what she emphasized
Actually, Mr. Watanabe, you also read this book. Yes, I read it. Is there any part that left an impression on you
When you think of Finland, you think of sauna, and well, Japanese
there are episodes about sauna appearing in the book
somehow showing up
and, well
looking back on her time as prime minister, when she was busy day after day with NATO accession and dealing with the COVID pandemic
she reflected that time inside the sauna was the only time she could rest, and I thought that really showed her human side
and on the topic of gender, she said the sauna is a place that represents the Finnish outlook on life
and that
inside the sauna everyone is naked
where everyone is equal regardless of age, background, or title
Now, Finland has been known for having a very low gender gap index, but
even so, in a place like Finland
men have played important roles in politics and the business world
and apparently decisions have been made inside the sauna
So she said that while it is a space of equality, in politics it has in a sense also been a closed-door space
and that she herself
as a woman
becoming prime minister meant women could enter that space, which
personally left a strong impression on me
Well, in Japan we talk about restaurant politics, but in Finland that restaurant is the sauna, sauna politics, sauna
politics, sauna diplomacy is conducted. That's right. But in Scandinavia, people say there's less of a gender gap
that the environment is better, but still there are aspects like that. That's right. And she herself attracted global attention over scandals
she is a person who
a video of her dancing at a private party with friends was leaked, and a photo of her wearing an
open-front jacket
drew attention, and looking back on that time she said
foreign media actually covered it positively, as in, Finland's liberal prime minister is doing this
but
from within Finland, on the contrary, there was criticism that as prime minister she
lacked dignity
or
その
that
many media voices questioned her fitness to hold public office. So that was
surprising. Even in Finland, there were voices doubting the qualifications of a young woman
to hold public office, to become the leader of a country
that was
surprising
Well, anywhere, those conservative
old men exist, right. Well, domestically there are political conflicts and such. Also, the Finns Party, that
right-wing nationalist, emphasis-type right wing has been growing. Yes
I think that also became a source of attacks. That's right. In the end, what prompted her to retire from politics was the Finns Party gaining seats
and the largest party formed a coalition with the Finns Party
and so saying we won't join, she
quit, yes
and she said her own family had nearly fallen apart
and that it became an opportunity to reexamine her own life
She spent quite a tough four years, it must have been hard. It affected her family too, so it's not all just a beautiful story. That's right
She's still, after all,
When she became prime minister, her child was one year old, yes. Just about to turn two,
I think. Sorry,
this time she came to Japan together,
she is now turning eight, I think. She turned eight. Yes. She said they went to Tokyo Disneyland and had fun,
And so this time on News 23, it became a dialogue with caster Ayaka Ogawa, and what kind of approach did you take for the interview,
what kind of interview was it able to be?
Yes. After all, at thirty-four,
years old,
leading a country,
the pressure is truly beyond what we can imagine,
I thought it must be on a scale that we can't even imagine. So,
Of course she is a woman, and I'm sure she faced hardships as a woman, but,
I wanted to dig into how she has faced the people as a young leader — her philosophy of leadership,
and her feelings about politics.
So, regarding NATO membership,
Ogawa asked her about how she continued dialogue with the public leading up to it.
She was asked by Ms. Ogawa.
Not joining NATO was in a sense one of,
Finland's national identities, wasn't it. And to overturn that,
as such a young leader,
to overturn it. But there was also public support behind it. Yes, indeed,
public opinion changed overnight, as she said.
She said public opinion changed overnight, but,
until now, not joining NATO,
by not provoking Russia, they had maintained good relations, but conversely, not joining would mean they themselves would be threatened,
and not just politicians but the people united and changed their way of thinking,
overnight, so that seems to have been a big support and tailwind for her.
Also, in this dialogue, the fact that she is the same age as Ms. Ogawa was one of the key points, I think,
and Ms. Ogawa also became,
the main caster of News 23 at a young age.
I found that aspect quite interesting as I watched. From that point, the two have so much in common.
They are both 41 this year and mothers raising daughters,
and both have experienced divorce.
And I only realized for the first time when Ms. Ogawa said it in the interview, in the dialogue,
Ms. Ogawa became,
a News 23 caster at age 34,
and Ms. Marin became,
prime minister at age 34. Of course their positions are different, but they had many things in common, so,
for Ms. Ogawa,
the same,
as two people who overcame various difficulties as women, there must have been feelings they could empathize with.
Yes, becoming a female prime minister at 34,
and serving as a main news caster at 34 is a huge thing, and at first glance it may look glamorous and sparkling, but,
it is a huge thing to serve as the main news caster.
there must have been hardships, criticism,
attacks flying at them, and tough experiences, so that aspect,
having actually experienced it,
there may be parts they can understand precisely because of that position.
I was thinking that as I watched. Yes. Do you usually have meetings with Ms. Ogawa in advance for such dialogues? Yes.
After reading the book, we discussed what she wanted to ask her.
After making that proposal, I also received advice and opinions from Ms. Ogawa on
what kinds of things to ask, and the two of us held repeated meetings
and then went into the interview. So
What kind of things did Ms. Ogawa say she wanted to ask, to draw out?
Well,
the difficulties of balancing family and work that women leaders face, where the difficulty of remaining a woman leader lies —
that seemed to be what Ms. Ogawa was interested in.
It was.
you know.
でした
Well, you know.
ね
you know
Well, recently Ms. Takaichi also posted on social media about how hard it is as a woman, and that sparked both praise and criticism, but I think that too reflects the fact that the world of politics has long been a male-dominated society.
That's right. Even during the magazine interview where she wore a jacket over bare skin,
what she talked about in that interview ended up getting no attention at all,
and only the photo spread around the world, and Ms. Marin did talk about her anguish
that she wants to be judged by what she has done,
yet only things other than that end up becoming the topic of discussion. Yes.
I'll put the link to this dialogue video, so I hope you'll watch it. Yes. So after watching the dialogue and reading Ms. Marin's book,
as for you, Ms. Watanabe yourself,
as a younger woman, so to speak,
is there anything you were influenced by or got inspiration from?
Well, yes,
even while being hounded by scandal, she never once apologized.
Well,
あの
just for happily dancing with friends,
for not behaving in a prime-minister-like way,
she never once apologized,
and as for the reason, she said that
she didn't want to fit herself into the long-standing stereotype of a prime minister,
and that personally left a very strong impression on me.
Um,
えっと
that society should accept more diverse people, and as more such people must go on to participate in politics,
if she herself were to conform to
the mold of how a prime minister should be,
it would send the message that only this kind of person can be a politician.
That's why it was important to keep sending out her message
without changing who she is — hearing her say that really
struck a chord with me. That
point about how all kinds of people should be accepted, I guess.
Well, in Japan too, where for many years there were only male prime ministers, Ms. Takaichi has become a female
prime minister, and yes, from now on she probably won't be singled out just for being a woman, so society will gradually
expand its capacity, I think. In that sense,
she changed the idea of how a prime minister must act
and showed it through her own example, right? Yes, that's right. Not about being male or female,
she said she is a leader. Not a female leader, but a leader entrusted with a country.
In that sense, my asking as a younger woman wasn't really
something to be proud of, was it? Right. That might not have been so good just now. Yes.
What kind of reporting do you hope to do going forward? Well, that's a really difficult question.
What kind of reporting do you hope to do going forward? Well, that's a really difficult question.
What kind of reporting do you hope to do going forward? Well, that's a really difficult question.
Well, but I'm still very interested in gender as a topic, so the other day,
on News Tree, about Kyoto's
the mayor of Yawata who, as the first mayor, took parental leave,
on that occasion as well,
well, directly,
I had the chance to interview him,
and, well, when he gave birth,
well,
あの
was it Forbes, I was so happy that he was chosen as one of the next generation 100, and going forward, about women's
social advancement and success, I'd like to continue covering that a little.
about women's advancement in society and their active participation, if I could pursue that a bit. Yes.
Also, you have experience in China, so I'd love to hear a special feature like that from someone who knows China well. I'd love to go to China. I think so. Yes, I'm looking forward to it. Yes.
Today, about the interview with former Finnish Prime Minister Marin who visited Japan this week, we spoke with News 23 director Yuko Watanabe. Ms. Watanabe, thank you very much. Thank you very much.
Thank you for listening again this week. Thank you very much.
Yes, so today was about Finland, but how about some Finnish music trivia. Yes, well,
When it comes to Finland, some of you may think of director Aki Kaurismaki, and,
this time we covered former Prime Minister Marin, and the topic of relations with Russia came up,
which reminded me of the Leningrad Cowboys, yes.
Directed by Aki Kaurismaki,
you know, he's a master, yes, yes, a master or a great director, yes, really, just like,
just seeing a shot of a man sitting in a diner with a table and a single flower in a vase on it,
you can tell it's Kaurismaki, you know,
he's that kind of director, and well, he directed,
there's a band called the Leningrad Cowboys who starred in the film Leningrad Cowboys Go America, but at first it was just a role name, you know.
But it ended up becoming the band name as is, and,
and their appearance is,
quite this,
with an amazing pompadour,
and wearing shoes shaped just like that amazing pompadour, you know, ah, they've put a photo up here now, yes, well, it's this amazing pompadour, you know, in short,
well, well, it's like a joke,
in a sense it's a concept, isn't it, and,
but you know, they,
not long after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1993,
together with the former Soviet Army choir, you know,
held a large-scale outdoor concert in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. And this was titled Total Balalaika Show,
and this performance was filmed by director Kaurismaki, and,
and this show, well, it's a live show, but,
starting with Finlandia by Sibelius, Finland's national composer, which is the very identity of the Finnish people itself,
as a piece,
and also Bryan Ferry's Let's Stick Together,
and the Turtles' Happy Together, you know, songs with that together feel, you know,
mixed in with Russian folk songs or songs based on Russian tunes like Those Were the Days, things like that,
they performed together, you know. And,
well, this,
the contrast between the Leningrad Cowboys' very bad-joke-like appearance and the former Soviet Army choir singing stiffly in uniform,
is extremely,
is the work.
The Leningrad Cowboys with their really, well, bad-joke-like appearance, and this former Soviet army choir singing stiffly in uniform,
the contrast is extremely
striking — that's what this work is about.
Well, at the time Finland was, well, taking a neutral position, so as not to worsen relations with neighboring Russia,
so in that sense, relations were good,
well, it's a bit hard to imagine now. Right. Now, that is. Yes. Well, that's how it is. But,
even at the time, during the Cold War, it was quite, the Red Army, or rather,
the Russian army, well, the former, the Soviet army, the Soviet army's choir came,
and performed this kind of Western pop, right,
that was rock and roll, doing it together with a joke-like band from the West,
this is quite,
even for that time, hard to imagine. Yes,
so what was hard to imagine just before that time from that time's perspective,
has happened. And that has now once again become hard to imagine,
so, well, in that sense,
well, it may not be something that could never happen again in the future.
