Teikoku Databank has announced the results of a survey on gas stations. It was found that over 1,700 companies
have withdrawn from the business in the last 10 years.
And between January and August of this year,
companies have withdrawn due to bankruptcy or business closure. This is the highest level in the past 10 years.
The recent sharp rise in gasoline prices has led to a significant drop in demand, which is a major factor.
There is a possibility that the number of companies withdrawing from the gas station business will continue to increase.
Now, as we head into the Silver Week holiday starting this weekend, gas stations are also decreasing in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, a popular tourist destination near the Kanto region.
Do you see any gas stations? I haven't seen any at all. Haven't seen any. Haven't seen any.
There are almost none left, so... I'm waiting. Yes.
Until last year, there were 5 stations, but due to successive closures, there are now only 2.
Residents of Goraku, Hakone Town, where a nearby gas station closed this March, say:
Not having a gas station in the local area is a matter of life and death.
なると
It becomes
really
when I heard it,
I thought, 'You've got to be kidding me.'
'Why?' I wondered. Yeah.
Under these circumstances, the town is also taking measures to maintain infrastructure that is essential for daily life and tourism.
As you can see, there are currently only two gas stations open in Hakone Town, but to break away from this situation,
they provided subsidies for gas stations. And as a result,
a gas station that closed this March used some of the subsidies for renovation costs,
and it is scheduled to reopen in November of this year, bringing the total to three. In any case, we would be in trouble without gas stations.
It's true that labor costs are rising and there is a labor shortage,
and with the increase in self-service stations, management must be quite difficult, so it seems that's the situation where subsidies are necessary. Renovation also costs money.
