Hello everyone. Welcome to the Japanese podcast. Hello. Today, let's take a slow look at Japanese stocks and shareholder benefits.
Shareholder benefits. That's the interesting part of Japanese stocks, isn't it? That's right.
Today, from a conversation between two young women,
we'd like to think about fun and useful investing for daily life. When you hear investing, you imagine watching difficult news or
looking at numbers on a computer every day, right? Yes.
But the story we introduce today is more relaxed.
The people appearing are 24-year-old Misaki and also
-year-old Rena. The two are friends. Yes.
Misaki works in an office job, and
NISA,
has been continuing it for 2 years now.
Two years is amazing. She's very steady. On the other hand, Rena works in sales at a shop, and is a complete beginner at investing.
Let's look together at these two chatting over tea in a cafe. Learning about investing from everyday cafe conversation is very friendly and nice.
Please listen as if you are also in the cafe with them. First, let's start with Misaki's story.
At first, she only bought investment trusts through NISA. An investment trust is a system where a fixed amount of money is automatically invested every month. Yes.
でも
But
Misaki felt that repeating the same thing every month was a bit unsatisfying, a bit boring. I see. Having everything done automatically is convenient, but
it's hard to really feel that you are investing. Exactly.
So instead of regular NISA, Misaki started buying stocks of Japanese
companies she chose herself, that is,
individual stocks. She started choosing companies herself. Why is that? Because she wanted to support familiar companies. Support them. That's nice. Oh.
And a big reason for buying individual stocks is shareholder benefits.
Shareholder benefits is a system where if you hold a company's stock, you receive a special gift from the company. It's a unique service distinctive to Japanese companies, isn't it?
What kind of company's stock did Misaki buy? Misaki's favorite is a company that makes goods for children. A company that makes cute goods. Yes.
If you hold this company's stock, you can receive shareholder-exclusive character goods that you cannot buy in regular stores.
Special goods you can't buy in stores. That makes you happy, doesn't it? Misaki gives those goods as presents to her cousin's child.
And the child is apparently very delighted. I see.
It's not just about increasing your own money, but you can make someone
happy. Exactly.
This is the same as joining a fan club of a shop, isn't it? A fan club? Yes.
When you join your favorite singer's fan club, a special present comes to your home, right?
It's very fun with the same exciting feeling as that time. That's certainly a wonderful analogy.
It's a joy that can't be explained by money calculations alone. But
from a professional investor's point of view, don't you think this is a bit of a waste? What do you mean? Because
rather than receiving a present,
it would be more convenient to receive money in cash and buy your favorite toys with that money. In economics textbooks,
certainly cash is more flexible and rational. Right. But
people are not moved by money alone.
More than just cash, they feel great value in the connection with a company and in making someone smile.
That becomes the motivation to continue investing for a long time. Not just profit, but emotional connection is important.
Everyone would be happier when someone important is pleased than just seeing bank money increase, right? Exactly.
It's wonderful that Misaki naturally enjoys that. Now, Misaki's story about shareholder benefits is not only about special presents.
It continues to a story about more practical benefits useful in daily life. What kind of practical benefits?
Misaki also holds stock in a large supermarket she often goes to. The neighborhood supermarket. Yes.
Every weekend she buys a lot of food and daily necessities at that supermarket. Weekend shopping is hard with lots of luggage, isn't it? That's right.
That supermarket's benefit is
a cashback system where part of the shopping cost is returned. The more you shop, the more money comes back a little. Yes.
Misaki finds this very convenient.
Rena, who was listening, also said, I go to the supermarket every week too, so I'm so jealous,
she said she was jealous. It does make you jealous. Because it's the same as daily living expenses becoming cheaper. But I have one question here. What is it?
What happens if the price of that supermarket's stock drops a lot? That's the risk of the stock price falling. Yes.
Even if you get a little money back at the supermarket, if the stock price falls, wouldn't you end up losing money after all? That's a very sharp question.
Normally you'd think that, right? Right. No matter how much cashback you get, if the loss is bigger, it feels meaningless. But Misaki-san's investing style is...
not something to make money in a short period. Not a short period. Yes. She is not trying to sell stocks tomorrow or next month to make a profit.
The goal is to hold stocks for a long time and reduce the burden of monthly living expenses. I see.
She uses it in a way that fits her daily life. That's right.
No one knows whether the stock price will go up or down.
でも
But...
it is certain that she goes to the supermarket every week and gets a little money back. She values the certain savings right in front of her over an uncertain future.
ええ
Yes.
Yes. Using investing within her own familiar daily life is very rational. That's a wonderful point. It makes you all want to look into stocks of supermarkets or stores you often go to, doesn't it?
I think it's a nice idea that makes life a little richer. But individual stocks are not all fun.
In the conversation, Misaki-san's experience of failure also comes up. Failure?
What kind of failure was it? Misaki-san...
She holds stock in a materials-related company that makes materials needed for digital devices. That's quite serious. Yes, she says she bought it thinking it would grow a lot in the future.
But Misaki-san has a big regret. A regret? Did she lose money? No, it's not that.
She regrets not buying stock in a certain data equipment...
company that was a huge topic last year. So not buying it was the failure. That's right.
Later, that company's stock price went up a lot, and...
she felt down thinking, oh, I should have bought it back then. Why didn't Misaki-san buy that stock at that time? She was absorbed in news about another new industry,
for example, news about future new services, and...
she just passed over that data equipment company. Ah, she was distracted looking at all kinds of news. Exactly.
While looking at this news and that topic, she missed the chance right in front of her. Nowadays so much information flows on the internet every day, so it's impossible to chase it all, isn't it? Yes.
But Misaki-san properly learned from this failure and...
made her own three simple rules. That's wonderful.
What kind of rules? The first is a company whose services she normally uses often. Like the supermarket from earlier. The second is a company she feels has future potential.
In other words, a company she herself thinks seems likely to grow in the future. I see. And the third is a company that she...
feels ... about. That's very easy to understand.
Don't you think these three rules are...
similar to finding a favorite shop in your town? A favorite shop? Yes.
A convenient store you often shop at, a new store that seems likely to become more popular,
そして
and...
a store you want to support because the staff are kind. Certainly, with that perspective it's not difficult. With these criteria,
you can find companies that suit you without doing complicated calculations. It's wonderful that Misaki-san fully understands that she can't succeed with all stocks. She thinks from the start that she can't get them all right. Yes. If you buy a stock because someone told you to and fail, it feels very sad.
But if it's a rule you studied and decided on yourself, you can accept it even if you fail. So she can keep investing without getting depressed.
When you all decide something,
having your own rules might make you feel more at ease. That's really true. Well, so far we've talked about Misaki-san's individual stocks.
Getting shareholder benefits and making rules, it sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't it? Yes.
She's fully enjoying individual stocks. But actually,
the main part of Misaki-san's investing is...
not individual stocks. Oh, really? Yes, the main way to grow money is the steady monthly accumulation she's continued from the start,
investing, that is, NISA. I see.
So she has a solid base. Misaki-san...
calls the monthly accumulation investing the foundation.
And she thinks of individual stocks as the spice for enjoying investing. Foundation and spice, nice words. It's the same as cooking, isn't it?
Daily rice or bread is the accumulation investing, you eat rice or bread every day. And individual stocks for shareholder benefits are...
like spices or side dishes to make the rice taste better.
Rice alone gets boring, but with side dishes, daily meals become enjoyable. Yes.
Thanks to this balance, researching various companies has become Misaki-san's hobby.
It seems she's like that, and she says she's not struggling at all. It's wonderful that investing can become a hobby. Hearing this story,
beginner investor Rena also had a change of heart. At first, Rena said investing seemed difficult, right? Yes,
but after hearing Misaki's story, she became positive, saying she might try learning slowly starting with pocket money without overdoing it. That's wonderful.
It really shows how important it is for beginners to enjoy it at their own pace.
I'm happy that someone who thought investing was scary has become interested. Yes,
Just like choosing your daily side dishes,
it would be wonderful if you could enjoy it without strain. I think Misaki's sense of balance is a very good hint for people who are about to start investing. That's right,
Now, at the end of the source of the two's conversation,
they ordered the cafe's new drink, didn't they? Oh, that's right. I saw a photo, and it looked really cute and delicious. Yes,
A sweet drink after a difficult talk about money must taste even better than usual. Indeed, I'd like to go to that cafe sometime too. That sounds nice.
It sounds relaxing. Well then, see you again.
