The world map may change significantly.
The UN has urged the use of a different projection instead of the Mercator projection,
a projection
that has been widely used in Japan and around the world. The Equal Earth projection
reflects the area of countries and regions
more accurately,
and African nations have been leading the call for its adoption.
How will the new map
change from what we have known,
and will it have an accurate impact? Maps can change how we view the world; do they really have that much influence?
Yes, they do.
That's right. Let's take a look at how
it changes. If we look at the conventional Mercator projection,
この
this
Greenland near the North Pole, marked in green, and Africa, in red, look about the same size. However, with this Equal Earth projection, which accurately reflects area,
では
it
looks like this: Africa is much larger. In fact, it is about fourteen
times the size of Greenland, so this projection can represent the area correctly.
By the way, the size of Japan hardly changes even with the new projection.
Certainly, for Kominka-san, this is a big issue. It's so different, isn't it?
It really
changes your impression, doesn't it? And to begin with, maps...
I'm sure you all studied various projections when you were students. Let's review them briefly: the Mercator projection, the Mollweide projection, the Azimuthal projection, the Goode projection, and so on.
Each one represents something correctly, whether it's area or direction. There are many such things. Uh,
you have a suspicious look on your face. Doesn't it bring back memories? It's in the corner of your memory. I do have memories of it, but...
It's true, now that you mention it. But I had one at home. You did, right? I think I had one. So today, we asked people in town about their memories related to maps.
To look for countries
that hosted the Olympics.
Even if you're just told the name, you wonder where it is, and it's interesting to find that it's in a different place
than where you thought it was.
Because it was only a flat map, right?
Walking around the globe, seeing that location and that...
It was the first time I realized how close those attractions were.
It was huge. No, it's vast. It was a big deal. I want to go there.
There are so many, aren't there? It's vast.
Finally, I couldn't see various places.
The Northern Territories, which are inherent territory of Japan, let's look at this.
They were drawn in the same color as Russia.
They say they referred to maps from US government agencies, but when FNN interviewed Mr. Patterson, he said this:
He explained that as a creator, there are times when he must reflect things on a map even in situations he finds undesirable.
And for future Japanese editions, he will change it to the same color as the Japanese archipelago.
And the Japanese government, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kishida, has also spoken about this.
He commented that it is necessary to prevent the spread of incorrect perceptions, and that they have requested the operators of map sites to correct the notation.
Well, there are various issues surrounding maps, but according to Mr. Tateishi, a commentator for Fuji TV and the Sankei Shimbun, here is the point:
Regarding world maps, as we saw with the various projections earlier,
depending on the size of the country or the direction from which you view it,
the way it looks changes, as you just experienced.
Therefore, Mr. Tateishi explained that maps always hold significant meaning in international politics as well.
So, we have looked at new projections and past projections up to this point today,
but the conclusion is that since the Earth is round, a perfect flat map is...
ございません
I do not have any
Lol. In the end
