これはEnglish as a Second Languageポッドキャスト、エピソード600です。
I'm your host, Dr.
ホストのドクター、
Jeff McQuillan, coming to you from the Center for Educational Development in beautiful Los Angeles, California.
美しいカリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスの教育開発センターからお届けするジェフ・マクイランです。
This episode is called "Talking About Sight About." How you see and vocabulary related to seeing.
今回のエピソードは「視力について話す」です。物の見え方と見ることに関する語彙についてです。
Let's get started.
さあ、始めましょう。
This medication I'm taking is messing with my vision.
飲んでいるこの薬のせいで視力がおかしくなっているんだ。
Everything is blurry.
何もかもぼやけて見える。
That's a good reason for you to stay home from work today.
それなら今日は仕事を休むべきいい理由だね。
I can't.
できないよ。
I have to give a presentation this afternoon, and I can't flake out on my coworkers.
今日の午後プレゼンをしなきゃいけないんだ、同僚たちを裏切るわけにはいかない。
What good are you to them if you're blind as a bat?
コウモリみたいに目が見えない状態で、彼らの何の役に立つの？
Everybody else will have crystal clear vision, so all I have to do is to put in an appearance.
他のみんなははっきりくっきり見えているだろうから、僕は顔を出すだけでいいんだ。
Things may not be as sharp as I'd like them to be,
思うほどはっきり見えないかもしれないけど、
but I can still make out people and objects as long as they're really big.
本当に大きければ、人も物もなんとか見分けられるよ。
I don't think your coworkers are going to want you to blindside them today with your strange behavior.
今日はあなたの奇妙な振る舞いで同僚たちを不意打ちさせたくないと思うよ。
You're going to do more harm than good.
良いことより害の方が大きくなるよ。
I can see well enough.
十分よく見えるよ。
I only see double if I move my head like this.
こうやって頭を動かしたときだけ二重に見えるんだ。
Whoa.
うわ。
At this point, I don't care if you have X-ray vision.
この際、あなたがX線視力を持っていても関係ないよ。
That medication is affecting more than your vision.
その薬は視力以上に影響しているよ。
It's impairing your better judgment.
あなたのまともな判断力を鈍らせている。
Sue begins our dialogue by saying.
スーは対話の冒頭でこう言います。
This medication I'm taking is messing with my vision.
「飲んでいるこの薬が私の視力をおかしくしているの。」
Everything is blurry.
「何もかもぼやけているわ。」
Medication is just another word for medicine or a drug that you take to help your health.
メディケーションとは、健康のために服用する薬や医薬品を指す別の言葉です。
To mess with is an informal expression, meaning to interfere with something or someone,
「mess with」はくだけた表現で、何かや誰かを妨害するという意味で、
to make something more difficult for someone, to get in someone's way in order to make something more difficult for them.
何かをより困難にすること、誰かにとって何かをより困難にするために邪魔をすることです。
You may say to someone, "Don't mess with me." That's a rather strong statement.
誰かに「Don't mess with me（私にちょっかいを出すな）」と言うことがあります。それはかなり強い言い方です。
You're saying.
あなたはこう言っているのです。
If you interfere with me or what I'm trying to do, I am going to do something bad to you.
もし私や私がやろうとしていることに干渉したら、あなたにひどいことをしますよ。
I am going to perhaps hurt you.
おそらくあなたを傷つけることになるでしょう。
Here, however, Sue just means that the medication is interfering with or affecting in a negative way her vision.
しかしここでは、スーは単にその薬が彼女の視力に干渉している、つまり悪い影響を与えているという意味です。
Vision, v i s i o n, is another word for eyesight, which means how well or how poorly you're able to see things.
Vision、V I S I O N は、eyesight の別の言い方で、物がどれくらいよく、あるいは悪く見えるかという意味です。
If you have what we might call perfect eyesight,
いわゆる完全な視力を持っている場合、
we would say you have 20/20 vision, meaning you are able to see without any glasses.
20/20 vision があると言いますが、これはメガネなしで見えるという意味です。
Well, Sue does not have 20/20 vision.
さて、スーは 20/20 の視力ではありません。
She says everything is blurry.
彼女はすべてがぼやけて見えると言っています。
B l u r r y, when things are blurry, they are unclear.
B L U R R Y、物が blurry だと、不鮮明です。
We would say they are not in focus.
焦点が合っていないと言います。
Your eyes can't see them clearly.
目ではっきりと見ることができません。
It's sort of like there are clouds around them, or you can't see where one thing begins and another ends.
まるで周りに雲があるような感じで、ある物の始まりと別の物の終わりがどこか分からないような感じです。
Another adjective we might use in this situation when talking about vision is fuzzy.
視力について話すとき、この状況で使える別の形容詞は fuzzy です。
F u z z y.
F U Z Z Y。
Blurry is probably more common, however.
しかし、blurry の方がおそらくより一般的です。
Hamid says that's a good reason for you to stay home from work today.
ハミッドは、それは今日仕事を休むのに良い理由だと言います。
He's telling her that she should not go to work because her vision is blurry.
彼は彼女に、視力がぼやけているから仕事に行くべきではないと言っているのです。
Sue, however, says, "I can't.
しかしスーは「できないわ。
I can't stay home.
家にいるわけにはいかないの。
I have to give a presentation this afternoon, and I can't flake out on my coworkers."
今日の午後プレゼンをしなきゃいけないし、同僚たちをすっぽかすわけにはいかないの。」と言います。
The expression to flake, f l a k e, out,
to flake、F L A K E、out という表現は、
is a two-word phrasal verb, meaning not to do something you are supposed to do,
二語の句動詞で、やるべきことをやらないという意味で、
especially something you are supposed to do with another person.
特に他の人と一緒にやるべきことをやらない場合に使います。
For example, you say that you are going to go to a movie with your friend, and that you will meet at the movie theater.
例えば、友達と映画に行くと言って、映画館で会う約束をしたとします。
But then you decide you're not going to go to the movie, and you don't even tell your friend.
でもその後、映画に行かないことに決めて、友達にさえ伝えない。
That would be to flake out, even if you did tell your friend.
たとえ友達に伝えたとしても、それは flake out することになります。
That could also be considered flaking out, especially if you do it at the last minute, meaning
それも flaking out と見なされることがあり、特に直前にやる場合、つまり
right before the actual time you are supposed to go to the movie.
映画に行くはずの時間の直前にやる場合です。
We can also use the verb to flake to mean the same thing, but to flake out is probably more common.
同じ意味で動詞 to flake を使うこともできますが、to flake out の方がおそらくより一般的です。
The two-word phrasal version.
二語の句動詞バージョンです。
Sue is giving a presentation with some of her coworkers, people with whom she works, and so cannot stay home.
スーは同僚たちと一緒にプレゼンをすることになっていて、一緒に働く人たちなので、家にいるわけにはいかないのです。
Hamid says, "What good are you to them if you're blind as a bat?
ハミッドは言います、「コウモリみたいに目が見えなかったら、彼らの役にどうやって立つの？
" What good are you to them means how are you going to help them if you are blind as a bat?
「彼らの役にどうやって立つの？というのは、コウモリみたいに見えなかったら、どうやって彼らを助けるつもりなの？という意味です。
This is an old expression in English to be blind.
これは英語の古い表現で、blind になるということです。
Means to be unable to see.
見えないという意味です。
A bat is an animal that I was told in school doesn't see.
コウモリは、学校で目が見えないと教わった動物です。
So to be blind as a bat means that you cannot see.
だから blind as a bat になるというのは、見えないということです。
You're unable to see very well.
あまりよく見えないということです。
Sue says everybody else will have crystal clear vision.
スーは他のみんなはとてもはっきり見えるだろうと言います。
Things that are crystal, c r y s t a l, clear,
crystal、c r y s t a l、clear であるものは、
are things that are very clear, very easy to see, or very easy to understand.
とてもはっきりしていて、とても見やすい、またはとても理解しやすいものです。
You can use this not just for vision, eyesight.
これは視力、目についてだけでなく使えます。
You can also use it to talk about an explanation.
説明について話すときにも使えます。
For example, this explanation is crystal clear.
例えば、この説明は crystal clear です。
I can understand it easily.
簡単に理解できます。
We hope these explanations are crystal clear to you.
これらの説明が皆さんにとって crystal clear であることを願っています。
Sue says all she has to do is to put in an appearance.
スーは顔を出すだけでいいと言います。
To put in an appearance means to show up,
To put in an appearance とは、姿を見せるという意味で、
to be seen in a particular place, even if you don't do anything important, even if you don't stay there very long.
何か重要なことをしなくても、長く滞在しなくても、特定の場所で見られることです。
My friend is getting married.
私の友人が結婚します。
I don't really want to go to the party after the wedding, what we call the wedding reception,
結婚式の後のパーティー、いわゆる結婚披露宴にはあまり行きたくないのですが、
but I need to put in an appearance at the church where he's getting married.
彼が結婚する教会には顔を出さなければなりません。
I need to go there and be seen.
そこに行って姿を見せなければならないのです。
Sue says things may not be as sharp as I'd like them to be.
スーは、物事が自分の望むほどはっきり見えないかもしれないと言います。
But I can still make out people and objects, as long as they're really big.
でも本当に大きければ、人や物はまだ見分けられる。
Sharp, here means easy to see, easy to understand, clearly defined, something similar to crystal clear.
ここでの Sharp は、見やすい、理解しやすい、はっきりと定義された、crystal clear に似た意味です。
Sharp, however, has several other meanings in English, and those can be found in our learning guide.
しかし、Sharp には英語で他にもいくつかの意味があり、それらは学習ガイドに載っています。
She says that she can still make out people and objects.
彼女は人や物はまだ見分けられると言っています。
To make out
To make out
is a two-word phrasal verb
は二語からなる句動詞で、
that means to be able to see something when it is otherwise difficult to see, usually because it is too far away.
普通は遠すぎて見にくいものを見ることができるという意味です。
You see someone walking toward you, but they are far away.
誰かがあなたに向かって歩いてくるのが見えますが、遠くにいます。
And you can't make out if it's a man or a woman.
そしてそれが男性か女性か見分けられません。
You can't see clearly enough.
はっきりと見えないのです。
Hamid says, "I don't think your co-workers are going to want you to blindside them today with your strange behavior."
ハミッドは言います、「君の同僚たちは、今日君の奇妙な行動で不意打ちされるのを望まないと思うよ。」
To blindside, one word, means to surprise someone, but in a bad way, in a negative way,
Blindside、一語で、誰かを驚かせるという意味ですが、悪い意味で、否定的な意味で、
to do something unexpected that is very negative.
非常に否定的な予想外のことをすること。
We were all blindsided when Jenna shared the company's secrets with the television reporters.
ジェナが会社の秘密をテレビの記者たちに話したとき、私たちは皆不意打ちを食らいました。
We were all surprised in a very negative way.
私たちは皆、非常に否定的な形で驚かされました。
Hamid says that Sue will blindside her colleagues, her co-workers, if she can't see.
ハミッドは、スーが目が見えないなら同僚たちを不意打ちすることになると言います。
He says you're going to do more harm than good.
彼は、君は善よりも害を及ぼすことになると言います。
The expression "to do more harm than good" means that your actions or words will create more problems than they solve.
「to do more harm than good」という表現は、あなたの行動や言葉が解決するよりも多くの問題を引き起こすという意味です。
It will be more negative than positive.
肯定的よりも否定的になるでしょう。
Sue says I can see well enough.
スーは言います、私は十分によく見えるわ。
I only see double if I move my head like this.
こんな風に頭を動かしたときだけ二重に見えるの。
Woe.
わあ。
To see double means to see two images of something.
To see double とは、物が二つの像に見えるという意味です。
If you have too much to drink, or you have taken some medicine.
飲みすぎたり、薬を飲んだりした場合。
You may start to see double.
物が二重に見え始めることがあります。
At least some kinds of medicine.
少なくともある種の薬では。
Sue says that she is seeing two of everything.
スーは、自分にはすべてが二つに見えると言います。
She only has that problem when she moves her head in a certain way.
彼女は頭をある特定の動かし方をしたときだけその問題があるのです。
But when she does this, she appears to be affected by it.
しかし彼女がそうすると、彼女はそれに影響されているように見えます。
She says, "Whoa," which is a way of expressing that you are experiencing something strange or something unusual.
彼女は「Whoa」と言いますが、これは何か奇妙なことや珍しいことを経験していることを表す言い方です。
Hamid says, "At this point, I don't care if you have X-ray vision.
ハミッドは言います、「この時点では、君がX線視力を持っていても構わない。
That medication is affecting more than your vision.
その薬は君の視力以上に影響を与えている。
X-ray vision is the ability to see through objects to see what's inside of something.
X-ray vision とは、物体を通して見て、中に何があるかを見る能力です。
If you go to the doctor." And the doctor thinks that you may have broken a bone, say in your arm or leg.
医者に行った場合。」そして医者が、例えば腕や脚の骨が折れているかもしれないと思うと、
They may take an X-ray.
彼らはX線を撮るかもしれません。
They may take a special picture which can see inside, if you will, your arm or leg.
彼らは言わば、あなたの腕や脚の内部を見ることができる特別な写真を撮るかもしれません。
To have X-ray vision is just another way of saying to have incredibly good eyesight, magically good eyesight.
X線視力を持つことは、信じられないほど良い視力、魔法のように良い視力を持つことを言う別の言い方にすぎません。
I think Superman had X-ray vision.
スーパーマンはX線視力を持っていたと思います。
He could see inside of things.
彼は物の中を見ることができました。
I'm not sure.
よく分かりません。
I'll have to ask him when I talk to him again.
次に彼と話すときに聞いてみなければなりません。
Hamid says the medication, the drugs that Sue is taking, is impairing her better judgment.
ハミッドは、スーが服用している薬、薬物が、彼女の適切な判断を損なっていると言います。
To impair.
損なうこと。
I m p a i r, means to make something worse, to make something not as good as it would normally be.
I m p a i r は、何かを悪化させる、通常よりも良くない状態にするという意味です。
Talking on a cell phone while you are driving, impairs your ability to drive.
運転中に携帯電話で話すことは、運転能力を損ないます。
That's true.
その通りです。
In fact, some research says that talking on the cell phone and driving is as bad as drinking and driving.
実際、携帯電話で話しながらの運転は飲酒運転と同じくらい悪いという研究もあります。
Both of those things impair your ability to drive.
そのどちらも運転能力を損ないます。
Your better judgment is your ability to know what is right and wrong, or what you should do or say in a particular situation.
Your better judgment とは、何が正しく何が間違っているか、ある特定の状況で何をすべきか何を言うべきかを知る能力のことです。
Hamid is saying that the medication is impairing Sue's better judgment.
ハミッドは、その薬がスーの正常な判断力を損なっていると言っています。
She's not able to think clearly, because of the drugs she's been taking.
彼女は服用している薬のせいで、はっきり考えることができていません。
Now let's listen to the dialogue.
では、会話を聞いてみましょう。
This time at a normal speed.
今回は通常の速さで。
This medication I'm taking is messing with my vision.
私が飲んでいるこの薬のせいで視力がおかしくなっているの。
Everything is blurry.
何もかもぼやけて見えるわ。
That's a good reason for you to stay home from work today.
それなら今日は仕事を休むべきだよ。
I can't.
できないわ。
I have to give a presentation this afternoon, and I can't flake out on my coworkers.
今日の午後プレゼンをしなきゃいけないし、同僚たちを裏切るわけにはいかないの。
What good are you to them if you're blind as a bat?
コウモリみたいに目が見えない状態で、彼らの何の役に立つっていうんだ？
Everybody else will have crystal clear vision, so all I have to do is to put in an appearance.
他のみんなははっきり見えるんだから、私は顔を出すだけでいいのよ。
Things may not be as sharp as I'd like them to be, but I can still make out people and objects, as long as they're really big.
思うほどはっきり見えないかもしれないけど、本当に大きければ人や物はなんとか見分けられるわ。
I don't think your coworkers are going to want you to blindside them today with your strange behavior.
今日、君の奇妙な振る舞いで同僚たちを不意打ちするなんて、彼らは望まないと思うよ。
You're going to do more harm than good.
良いことより害の方が大きくなるよ。
I can see well enough.
十分見えるわよ。
I only see double if I've moved my head like this.
こんなふうに頭を動かしたときだけ二重に見えるだけよ。
Whoa!
うわっ！
At this point, I don't care if you have X-ray vision.
もはや君がX線の視力を持っていても関係ないよ。
