NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. is
a comprehensive ceramics manufacturer headquartered in Aichi Prefecture. Since 1937, it has continued to make spark plugs essential for running gasoline cars
With its unique history and technological strength, its global share is an astonishing
No.1
NGK Spark Plug supplies products to many automobiles around the world
I'm looking forward to hearing about NGK Spark Plug, which is expanding into such various fields. Thank you
Thank you
So, the first theme is this
The strengths behind NGK Spark Plug's world No.1 spark plugs and what's behind them
First, let me ask again, spark plugs are kind of hard to picture,
could you explain what they are? A spark plug plays the role of a lighter, so to speak
Internal combustion engines in cars and such run by exploding gasoline,
but gasoline alone is hard to burn
So by using electric power to create a spark, the gasoline is exploded to move forward. High temperature,
and high voltage and high pressure — in a quite harsh environment,
it must keep producing sparks, so it's a product used in a harsh environment
May I ask about the strengths that make those spark plugs No.1 in the world? Yes,
I think our spark plugs' strengths are mainly three. First is this ceramics material technology
Second is know-how for mass production
And third is the relationship of trust with customers, brand power — I think these are our three strengths
You mentioned ceramics, but what kind of material is it in the first place? Organic matter,
inorganic matter
Metals
It falls under inorganic materials when the world's materials are divided into three categories
Roughly speaking, ceramics are characterized by being more heat-resistant than organic materials and more electrically resistant than metals
I heard that in addition to spark plugs using ceramics, you're expanding into new fields
Yes, that's right
With the ceramics and inorganic materials we've cultivated over the years as our core
the areas where we can make the most of our strengths are mobility
and semiconductors, and also environment and energy. We've set these three areas as our main focus. How exactly are you able to expand so broadly?
There are three reasons. The first is that as a core of ceramics and inorganic materials
we have technologies
that we've built up over many years, and we're applying them to challenge various new fields
And second, I think it's our stable management foundation
And third, I think it's that we have a culture of taking on challenges
Our founder had a strong will to make use of Japan's specialty, ceramics technology, domestically and to help Japan
grow, which is why the company was founded at the time
I think the culture of taking on challenges is still deeply rooted today
Listening so far, I had the image of an auto parts manufacturer, but you really have businesses in so many different areas
Is there anyone who joined with something specific they wanted to do before joining?
I
love ceramics, so
once I joined, I wanted to work on the development of SOFC and SOEC
I wanted to be involved in development
Simply put, they are fuel cells
Kojima-san, was there anything you wanted to do?
What I'm doing right now is exactly what I wanted to try
Our company was putting a lot of effort into launching new businesses, so I joined because I wanted to play an active role there
-san is also working on something new
Yes, I'm also in the environment and energy field, currently working on a regional
demonstration project. We're aiming for something like a distributed demonstration-type energy system. Not large-scale
but
we're focusing on small-scale distributed systems as one theme
Our strength is that we can flexibly deploy them to match the scale of companies in the region
Among those three main domains, is there anything you're actually driving forward or that you think will grow in the future?
Developing plugs for hydrogen fuel is something we're working on as a company
especially going forward
I think fuel efficiency will become important, so for example for hybrids
we're also working in parallel on developing plugs that can perform more efficiently
Here's our next topic
A thorough analysis of NGK SPARK PLUG competing beyond patent barriers
From here, I'd like to have everyone gathered here today thoroughly discuss the real behind-the-scenes work at NGK SPARK PLUG
across three topics. First, please explain what kind of work you usually do
Regarding how job roles are involved, first to manufacture a product, design and development come first
then procuring materials to make it, and then manufacturing. What we make here
is delivered to customers through logistics, and finally sales — that's the flow
We also hear from customers
feed back their opinions internally, and then spin this cycle again for new development or improvement
I think that's how we're involved
Now let's move on to the first topic of our in-depth discussion
The first topic is introducing each of your roles individually — from creating a product to actually selling it to customers
What kind of work do each of you do? Please introduce yourselves in order
Yes, so first, I work in the Advanced Development Department, mainly conducting research,
thinking about technologies that will likely be needed in the future, and developing materials suited to those technologies.
That is the kind of work I do.
Based on the research content that Mr. Saruwatari just explained,
my job is to introduce it to customers as a new technology.
When introducing it to customers, it is important to firmly grasp market trends and turn it into a business, so I also conduct research on that.
My work goes as far as passing on requests received from customers to the design side.
From marketing,
we receive customer needs. In response to that, for example in my spark plug business, we do development and design for customers that meets those needs.
After that it goes to manufacturing, so
we have a system where we do development and design with manufacturing somewhat in mind, and then hand it over.
In my part,
based on the design information received from marketing, as technology development, I am now
developing a system called methanation,
where I make use of various information from customers, and we are also proceeding with demonstration tests outside the company, so at that stage we are advancing development while accurately incorporating information from customers.
incorporating it precisely while advancing development.
Well then, moving on to the next topic.
Frankly, what is the atmosphere like in your workplace?
In the new business division where I am, marketing and development work in the same
workplace. Since we are physically close, we know each other well, and I think we are able to work in a friendly atmosphere.
For me too, in a similar way, process design people who think about equipment, and the technical department of plug sales,
work on the same floor as us, so I also think that being physically close is important for communication and collaboration.
さん
Mr...
how about you? Yes, it's the same. To put it in a way that's easy for students to imagine,
I think my department's environment is almost the same as a laboratory.
The chiefs are like master's students, and above them there are
people with specialized
knowledge, who are like PhDs,
in that kind of structure,
going beyond those boundaries,
you can go and ask them various questions,
it's that kind of workplace.
Now for the final topic.
Through such daily passion and memorable episodes, what frankly is the common trait of employees working at NGK Spark Plug?
Overall, I have the impression that there are many calm employees. Once I became a working adult, I thought I would have to work with a lot of
guts,
working desperately,
clinging to amazing seniors no matter what, but there are many employees who teach me carefully, so I am grateful for the environment.
That's how I feel.
Mr. Soji, you are also... but what kind of things have you experienced?
Yes, senior employees
stayed with me in the form of...
I felt that many of them care not only about how to proceed with work but also about how life is as a new employee.
What is the most important thing for all of you in your work? Yes, I think for me it's the spirit of just trying everything to confirm.
In research, you will definitely get stuck at some point, but rather than thinking about what would happen if you do this and then thinking about what comes next, first just move. There is not much difference between when you just think and when you just act. So act even one second sooner.
That is my thinking. Mr. Taniguchi, what do you value? Well, doing product design that customers need
is what I value. As mentioned earlier,
regarding what Mr. Saruwatari explained,
well, in the field of research, I think trial and error is important,
Um, when it comes to the field of research, I think trial and error is really important.
What I'm doing
that development
is in a slightly different phase from research, so I think it's important to properly capture the customers' needs
I believe
What do you value, Mr. Shoji? I try to be conscious of standing in the customer's position and accurately grasping what they want
in my work
If I can't grasp it accurately, when I bring the information back to the company
development may proceed in an unintended direction, or even if we propose what was developed, the customer won't be happy at all — a situation where
no one is happy, so I think that's an important point as a marketer in my work

the day before, and the results come out in the morning, so I wake up in the morning praying, excitedly hoping it went well. Wow, amazing
Based on the results I see in the morning, I think about how changing this might work better
and submit the calculations

The final theme is this. Selection points and career realities
So far we've experienced the overwhelming passion of the Japan Patent Office

Finally, we'll ask about the real selection process for joining the Japan Patent Office and career plans
What made you all decide to join the Japan Patent Office
In high school I went to a five-year technical high school, and since then I've wanted to get a job involved in manufacturing
I had that
When I was a student I rode motorcycles as a hobby, so I was interested in the plugs of NGK Spark Plug

In the end, what we develop goes into cars, and customers drive those cars, so
there's a sense of fulfillment in manufacturing, and that's why I chose this company
Were the rest of you also interested in manufacturing
I decided to join because I wanted to be involved in manufacturing from the perspective of new business. Among them, NGK Spark Plug's seriousness about new business
was great, and that was the biggest deciding factor
While having strong financial resources built up through existing businesses like spark plugs and sensors, they don't rest on that and are challenging new businesses — that was
impressive to me
I'd also like to hear about the interviews — do you remember what the atmosphere was like
The second selection round was very memorable. It's a selection setting where you appeal
your research content

I got the impression that the people working here are those who have an endless interest in amazing technology
What I remember is during the final interview
when I talked about my strengths from my student days, my motivation for applying, and so on
rather than the content itself, they focused on how that experience from my student days affects my life now
how I am living my life
what kind of mindset I have gained through that and how I act on it
I have a strong impression that they listened to me with emphasis on that
I have the image that they focused on my personality and such when listening to me
I think you also conduct interviews in HR now, so frankly, what kind of person are you actually looking for
The type of person our company is looking for is someone who thinks about the essence for the sake of a goal and perseveres without giving up
Did they also place importance in the interview on what kind of research students had done? In my case, when I was in university
I was researching ceramics like the ones our company handles. What I felt in the interview was, rather than checking whether my research content
matched the company's business, they were looking at whether I had thought through the research

Aichi is the land with ties where my own personality was formed. The place where I was born
I think I have a stronger desire to contribute to the local community
than others, so overall
life in Aichi is the best. Also, I think you have many overseas bases, so are there transfers or overseas assignments
It varies by job type, but basically I think many people
stay in Aichi Prefecture all along, though many of them work with overseas bases
by holding online meetings from within Japan
Speaking of that, I wonder if there are internships, so frankly, is there any preferential treatment? For internships, workshops, open company events, etc.
There might be a chance for those who have participated in something. First of all, you should participate. Yes. We'd love for you to come
