With annual sales exceeding 60 billion yen, Takuyo is a long-established apparel manufacturer with 275 years of history.
This time, we follow two sales reps at Takuyo who handle everything from apparel planning to delivery.
If you're not someone who can make quick decisions on the spot, you won't win them over.
It's not like just because it's cute it will sell, so capturing the data is what salespeople have to value most.
Behind the glamorous image of the apparel industry, we take a close look at a real day spent running around doing data analysis and market research.
Thank you very much.
My name is Nashiro from Takuyo Co., Ltd.
Thank you for having me today.
Likewise.
Thank you very much.
Right now I'm in a department called the Teens Young Section,
and I belong to it,
handling teens-oriented items aimed at people in their teens to twenties,
as well as a wide range from casual taste to elegant taste clothing aimed at slightly older age groups,
in charge of sales for major mass retailers.
And, well, in terms of what I handle, I'm in charge of woven items.
To propose products to customers and have them buy them, to make that happen,
first we do market research and hold meetings between sales and designers to plan what kind of products to propose at what time.
And after making the plan, we request fabrics from factories in China or receive fabric proposals.
When those fabrics arrive, we request product samples, check the samples, and then present them to customers.
propose them to them.
And once we get an order from there, we request manufacturing in China.
One month or two months later when they come in, we handle them and deliver them to the customer's warehouse — the whole flow from planning to delivery,
is what I handle.
I see.
Wow, so all of these are reference materials?
That's right.
Around here, there are things like fabric stock positions and data for products that actually received orders.
Specifically, what kind of data do you look at?
When we deliver products to mass retailers,
they provide us with weekly best-seller data, so I analyze last year's data and this year's data,
and use that reading of the data to connect to this year's planning.
When you hear fashion industry, you might have a glamorous image, but alongside the fun and glamour, there's also this gritty side of looking at detailed data like this.
I think that's also very important at a trading company.
Just being cute is hardly enough,
it doesn't resonate with customers, I mean, it's not like it sells just because it's cute, so,
in order to firmly convey the rationale for why it will sell to customers and lead to orders,
I think objectively grasping the data is what salespeople must value most.
And then there's Mr. Ono, in his Xth year, chief of the section.
I'm the chief, and there's a manager, Mr. Kaku, and as sales subordinates there's third-year Nashiro and a second-year member.
And there are five designers.
In his eighth year with the company, Mr. Ono became section chief, handling everything from planning to sales.
When asked about his upcoming schedule: Yes, in about 10 minutes I have a business meeting, so I'll be heading to the meeting.
It's mainly a meeting about winter items.
It will be mainly about winter bottoms.
How do you judge what is likely to sell?
Well, by looking at store data that's already coming in, and the market,
analyzing what's trending in the market, what is likely to sell, and thinking about what will sell at our client's stores,
and proposing accordingly.
The buyer from the mass retailer client arrives.
The business meeting is starting right away.
Please go ahead.
Please start with checking what's selling well now.
These are the dot flocky pants.
The material has a slightly glossy feel, and they're baggy curved pants.
Striped tuck easy pants.
This one?
This one is more...
はい。
Yes.
But really, in terms of image, it looks like this.
The product we wanted to sell actually sold.
We received interest centered on the dot-pattern pants, and also there's a denim style that's selling well now, so we changed the fabric a bit
to propose it, and what I thought was best was that something we proposed in a completely new
shape was ordered, which I think was really great.
So, what kind of preparation do you usually do before business meetings?
Preparation for meetings, you mean.
Well, it starts about a year in advance,
There are things we proposed and sold, things that sold, and things we couldn't do but were all over the market, so for fall 2027,
if that product looks like it will still be trendy, we prepare from now so we can propose it for fall 2027.
Ah, that's right.
Right now we're doing both planning and sales, and sales is the closest
to the customers,
and it's where you get the most speed, so by having sales also do planning, the speed and accuracy of planning improves
That's how our team works now.
We can't do business in any other style anymore.
Unless you're someone who can make instant decisions on the spot, it's hard to win the other party over.
Of course data is the most important, and I plan while looking at data.
How much sells in stores, how much in this season, how much in this week, what the temperature was at that time,
I have that for '25, '24, '23, about three years,
by each client,
and I'm always conscious of that.
Also, when having meetings, there are policies.
で、
And,
Our company management philosophy has a phrase 'customer six, self four,' meaning six parts customer, four parts us,
Contributing to the customer's profit will come back as our own
profit, so rather than focusing on the sales or profit budgets given by the company, I try to focus on the customer's store sales
and contributing to the customer when I do meetings and business.
Azusa.
Next, Ms. Nashiro, holding product samples, headed to... um, excuse me, please.
I have a consultation because I want to get an order next week.
What I first proposed was the lame tweed summer-switch mermaid skirt that sold well last year, continuing to propose it.
I want to connect this simpler skirt to an order as well.
First of all, with the same shape as last year, the exchange rate is different, and raw material prices are different, so the same conditions are difficult.
Yes, Ms. Nashiro
came to consult on Tuesday,
and among what she consulted about, I listened to the issues that couldn't be solved on the spot and sent my advice.
Do you often consult like this?
Yes, I do.
This time I think you were getting feedback after the meeting, but before proposing
I check and discuss how much cost I can propose to the client for the samples that came up.
あとは
Also,
There are also times when we can't make products at the desired cost,
I often consult about what to cut back or how to be creative to fit the cost.
After finishing morning work, off to lunch.
The liveliness of taking a break together with section members is one of its characteristics.
Where are you headed now?
Um, I'm going out for a bit of market research.
I want to see what other brands and customers are offering at this time, and connect it to next year's
proposals.
There are so many station buildings and fashion buildings now, so whenever I can take a quick look, I always try to check them.
So in terms of frequency, I'm basically looking at stores almost every week.
Well, first of all, color and pattern are what catch my eye first, and after that I look at the feel of the material.
Yes, good work.
It ends in about an hour, doesn't it.
Yes, well it depends on the timing, but I go many times for about an hour, and when I want to look thoroughly I sometimes spend two or three hours, but mostly it's about an hour.
How was this research?
Yes, fall items are gradually coming out, so I looked at those products.
The lame tweed products were cute, and the ethnic-style buttons also felt elegant and could add value.
I'd like to use this for reference in the meeting later for what we'll propose going forward.
Collecting not only numerical data but also live information like the actual state of stores.
At large companies conscious of trends, they also go overseas to stay ahead of trends.
Seeking trends that can't be caught in Japan alone, they visit local factories, machinery, and product markets.
Back at the company, the two hold a meeting with people from other departments based on the earlier information.
Well then, let's do it
か。
.
Um, last week
I think we talked about it, but
um, well, from age 14
to 15, rather than cluttered teens' clothing from around second year of middle school to around third year of high school, we want to plan for girls who want to wear simple and slightly cool clothes.
we want to do the planning.
今いま
Now,
I'd like you to tell me what's selling now,
Long-sleeve T-shirts have been selling all summer, so if multi-border stripes sell in fall and winter too, that would be really cute.
And the silhouette is the pants that are selling really well this year.
No, they're really beautiful, and with a material change
for casual pants, well, teens' denim used to have patches or embroidery, but yeah.
Yes, that's right.
They want to dress a bit more mature,
well, still bottoms too
in adult sizes they can't quite pull off, so
they'd be happy if there was a size in that subtle gap between adult sizes and kids' sizes.
What was the earlier meeting about?
There are girls who admire adults, but
we received an issue that there are no stores to buy clothes at,
and thinking about what we can propose for that, Nashiro and I only have woven
items, so we're sharing the issue received from the client again with the cut-and-sew and knit staff so we can propose together.
Do you often think about products across departments like that?
Yes.
Basically our company is organized in single-item teams, but recently there are more opportunities to propose in coordinated outfits.
So that's been increasing lately,
so as the cut-and-sew knit team, we sometimes collaborate across departments to propose ideas and things we hadn't really considered or done before.
Are there any proposals from Ms. Ono or Mr. Nashiro that left an impression on you, that made you think 'I see'?
Also, for example,
like coordinates for petite customers or for tall customers, things we hadn't
paid attention to ourselves before, proposals like that are really
something I'm learning a lot from working together with them, and at the same time I'm being helped by them.
What kind of collaboration do you do between the sales team and the designers?
Basically, designers do the planning,
and for that planning, well, it's actually the salespeople who sell it, so like what materials to use in order to sell it well,
It's coordination for meetings toward business negotiations, like meetings for making samples.
What was a bit surprising to me is that I thought designers would be in the designers' department and salespeople in the salespeople's department, separately, but
designers also work together with salespeople,
and by negotiating with customers like that, you can understand what customers are really
thinking in real terms, and of course it also saves time, and you can learn what customers actually think, and things you
wonder about,
instead of having salespeople ask for you, you can ask yourself and get answers, so you can make better plans.
です。
.
Our company's brass instruments... / Our company's...
We'll eat somewhere after that.
I'm about to go out to a business meeting with a client now.
About two appointments a day.
That's right.
I usually have about two or three business meetings.
What is in the kijusu / fabric swatch case?
It contains samples and swatch books that serve as color samples when making proposals to clients.
Will you be proposing something in this meeting as well?
はい。
Yes.
I'll mainly propose bottoms and have them support me with that.
Well then, I'm off.
Takuyo continues to lead the garment industry by delivering highly sensitive, high-quality products speedily.
We asked the two people working at Takuyo about what made them join the company and how they feel about their work.
When I thought about working for a long time from now on, I wanted to make what I love my job,
and one of those things was clothes, and as I proceeded with job hunting, I came across the job of a textile trading company,
です
.
So rather than specifically wanting to work for a trading company, I found Takuyo because I love clothes and wanted a job involving clothes.
And as I looked at other textile trading companies,
what I really liked about ours was
that it's easy to communicate with senior colleagues who are young, and in a good way they're not pushy, which was different from my image of a trading company,
so that's why I chose this company.
I'm from Ichinomiya City in Aichi Prefecture, which was part of Bisai City, a town of weavers,
so that's where I first became interested in the textile industry.
Within that, trading companies can change what they sell every week,
every month, and I thought that high degree of freedom
would suit me better, so that's how I pursued job hunting aimed at trading companies.
Since I joined a trading company,
one of my goals is to work not just in Japan but somewhere outside Japan,
and I had a feeling it would only come true much later,
but Mr. Onai took me with him on business trips to China and Korea this year, so
I got to see how people in China work, at factories and such.
Being able to see so many different things was a really great experience.
I'm still in sales myself, so having customers buy what we came up with is fun and makes me happy,
and whether it sold or not shows whether we were able to contribute to society or not, and that's what I find fun and rewarding.
That's what I find enjoyable and rewarding.
And now,
looking at it from my current position as chief, seeing Ms. Nashiro and other designers
including all the team members,
taking what they thought of themselves, what they came up with, and putting it into action
and whether it's good or bad aside, the fact that they think and act on their own is what makes me happiest, and as more members like that join,
I think my own work will become even more enjoyable.
I think my own work will become even more enjoyable as more members like that join.
I guess proposing a product and getting it bought
isn't the goal — it's about it actually being sold in stores, selling well, contributing to customers, and becoming the seed for next season's planning, that planning cycle
I haven't really been able to experience that cycle yet, so I'd like to become a salesperson who can build up successful experiences like that.
I want to become a salesperson who can accumulate that kind of successful experience.
I think being able to take on challenges from a young age is our greatest strength.
At times it can be tough or difficult,
but in return, since we have business meetings every week, we can turn the repeated cycle of preparing, proposing, and getting orders into experience many times over —
I think that's our company's strength.
That's what I think,
and also, toward our clients, having the Nittaku name behind us means people will listen to us even when we're young —
I think that's a very helpful reputation to have when you're doing sales as a young employee.
Well, in terms of what kind of person I'd like Ms. Nashiro to become, our management philosophy is
trust first,
humility and dedication, self-discipline and independence, and now I realize how important that really is.
First, trust first starts with earning the customer's trust, and humility means humbly, honestly, and diligently working hard — I now think that was the most
important thing.
So,
as for what kind of person to become,
well, I think if you're honest, humble, and above all cheerful, things will go well.
なんで
Good work today.
How did today's business meeting go?
Well,
there were still things I didn't understand and Mr. Ono helped me out a lot, so I feel I still have a lot to learn.
By the way, are you going to keep working after this?
No, I'll just clean up today, and then do my best again starting tomorrow morning.
Finally, please give a message to the students watching this video.
During job hunting, please look at many different industries, learn about many industries, and use the time to find the place that's perfect for you.
If among them there are people interested in the textile industry or Nittaku, we're waiting for you, so let's work together.
Good luck.
You only get to do job hunting as a new graduate once,
so I hope you'll do it with no regrets, and since it's hard to take long holidays once you become a working adult,
I think you should enjoy yourself to the fullest while you're a student, and work hard once you start working.
I'd be happy if we get a chance to work together.
Well then, thank you for today.
Thank you very much.
Good work.
Being able to see so many different things was a really great experience.
Thank you very much.
Good work.
