And now, it is said that we are actually in a phase that exceeds this Izanami boom.

The economic trend index for July, announced on Monday, suggests that the economic expansion has likely continued for 74 months,

and it is expected to become the longest in the postwar period.
However, what is coming from the streets is...
Where is the economy really good?

The reason is,
the current Japanese economy, which is seen as being in the longest period of postwar economic expansion.

In the first place, the economy is judged based on indicators such as factory production volume, corporate profits, and the job-to-applicant ratio.

This contrast between companies and households seems to be the reason why the economic expansion cannot be felt.

There is still no prospect of relief for household budgets from the high prices that are accompanying this economic expansion.

The Japanese economy is currently in the midst of polarization. Yes. Even if it's called an economic expansion, the current growth rate is less than 1%. Yes. And there is data showing that bankruptcies are increasing due to high prices and labor shortages, right?
Yes.
Yamanaka-san,
how do you view the current economic situation? That's right. When people say it's the longest in history, it sounds good, but it's not really like that, is it? Even in the most recent quarter,
there was 4% growth,
but the problem is,
annually,
there was almost no growth.
It is currently the lowest among the G7 countries in terms of real GDP growth. Like South Korea. Yes.
Well, in such a situation, the government is taking a strong stance that it's time for investment from now on,
strongly,
saying that they will proceed with public-private investment.
Everyone is hyping this up, but while the stance is correct, when I look at the substance, I don't think it's worth evaluating at all. In 17 fields,
Well, they say they will invest 300 trillion yen, but while they call it strategic investment in 17 fields, it's completely market-driven,
And this 300 trillion yen investment is a public-private investment,
So, in essence, it's government-led.
I have to ask, has government-led ever worked before? Even in semiconductors, the Elpida project was a spectacular failure,
And recently,
They said they would do content with such government leadership, and that was another huge failure, with 500-something trillion yen in
debt, and yet no one is taking responsibility, no one
is reflecting on it.
And now they want to do it again with government leadership.
My question is, will this really work? Rather, if we were to do it private-sector led, how would we do it? Well,
I want to tell those in the government too, if you change your mindset,
Wages are not a cost. Properly
realizing the judicial system to raise wages, if you look at things like that,
and don't take risks, that is absolutely no good. There are two sources for investment: there is over 600 trillion yen in internal reserves,
and there is over 200-something trillion yen in personal financial assets. So
how do we utilize that? So, for example, if you try things like investment tax cuts for people who really want to do it, like angel investors,
I think you have to change the way you do things.
Mr. Sato, what do you see as the cause for this lack of feeling?
Well, first of all, the major premise is that this economic expansion started from the point where the economy was truly hit by COVID.
In addition to that, even if we call it economic expansion, it is basically centered on the metropolitan areas and large corporations.
それから
Also,
unlike the period of high economic growth, this economic expansion is happening while the wealth gap is widening.
And above all, there are many people who are feeling the pain of high prices.
So, given the current situation, it is necessary to some extent to suppress prices, and also
how to deal with the pain of low-to-middle
income earners is something that must be done properly. Well, because of that, they are saying they will cut consumption tax now,
but as has been said, consumption tax cuts
tend to favor high-income earners more, so whether this is really a measure against high prices or for low-to-middle income earners,
well, it might be better than doing nothing,
but considering that fiscal resources are limited, is this really the best way?
Originally, they could have just moved up the benefits that were supposed to start in two years, but either way, it requires funding.
The extraordinary Diet session starts in October,
so if they don't properly figure out how to find the funding and how to actually implement it,
they won't be able to gain the market's trust again. It's shifting toward a stronger yen now, which is a good trend, but
it could easily return to a weaker yen, so we are at a very critical juncture. Yes.
Even though there is economic expansion, there is a bias, and there is the reality that wages are not keeping up with high prices.
Is that the current situation?
Mr. Ito, how do you see it? Yes. Even if you look at the actual macroeconomic data,
the disposable income, which is the amount after subtracting the price increase, has hardly grown during this period.
And as a result, personal consumption, that is, household consumption, has finally reached the level of 2010
before the pandemic,
so it's just that weak. And capital investment, which is the domain of companies, is leading,
and the situation where household consumption is weaker than that
is actually the same structure as the Izanami period and the current Abenomics period.
However, what is different about the current situation is that due to high prices, the so-called nominal GDP and the amount of price increases
are larger, so for example, if you look at the government or Ministry of Finance figures for GDP,
it looks higher, and corporate profits are at record highs,
and because corporate profits are high, income from dividends is also increasing,
and interest income from corporate deposits is also increasing, so, well,
The way it moves is different from how it shook off things before, but the benefits and how they are eliminated are still very inconsistent.
That is the point.
Mr. Matsubara, what are you focusing on? This economic expansion is largely due to
nominal figures inflated by high prices.
If you compare that to a human body, it looks big, like someone who has gained a lot of muscle.
But in terms of real economic strength, has the muscle grown
and the basal metabolism increased?
That part is still uncertain.
So, when I spoke as a representative of the business world, I said the government should create an environment for growth, such as through deregulation, but another thing is
for example, I still don't think social security is effective.
And if there is anxiety about the future, people will inevitably tighten their purse strings.
Or
あの
um
if there is a huge national debt,
it will inevitably hold back future growth.
Consumption has been postponed.
So, what we should do now is not to implement large-scale fiscal spending during this time of high inflation,
and rather than risking further yen depreciation and high prices, we need wisdom to build muscle instead of raising taxes.
I think this wisdom is necessary. It's easy to understand when compared to the human body.
