there are even people who are hired by a boss [who is AI].

が
As [AI]
continues to grow, jobs done by people are being replaced,
and that is what is happening in the United States.
In fact, among major companies that have cut staff due to AI adoption in the U.S., for example Amazon announced in January this year about 16,000 people,
and Meta, which operates Instagram, announced in April cuts of about 8,000, amounting to 10% of all employees,
です
people.
And Microsoft also cut about 4,800 jobs, so there is actually an impact within the country, within the U.S.,
Ms. Yoshida, who lives there locally, what is the current situation now?
Yes, the use of AI technology is quite advanced in the United States
For example, here in Los Angeles, it has become a common sight to see driverless self-driving cars running around the city
In both daily life and at work, using AI is now taken for granted
As a result, in terms of employment, office workers such as clerical staff and engineers
are said to be starting to be replaced by AI
is beginning to be replaced by AI
You can feel how close AI is even just watching the footage, but as for what American voters actually feel, according to surveys by Reuters and others
84% of people answered that AI is a threat that takes away jobs
That number alone feels high, but since 60% said illegal immigrants are a threat to jobs, it is well above that level
So, Ms. Yoshida, are there actually effects on employment?
Yes. Various fields are being affected and are seeing impacts
The industry particularly heavily affected is Hollywood's entertainment industry
With the use of tools, video production work has become dramatically more efficient
Many production staff and actors
as well as voice actors and others are facing a crisis of losing their jobs
According to Ms. Rivera, a voice actor we interviewed this time
voices, by training them on human voices, are being improved to the point where they can even express human emotions
She voiced her concern that in a few years, it may become impossible to distinguish between AI and humans
In yesterday's segment as well, we discussed how rights regarding voices are being developed in Japan too, and that they should be protected, and that work is being done step by step
How are rules to protect creators being developed within the EU?
Well, here in California, the other day
a law was created requiring that when actors or AI voice actors are used in advertisements, that fact must be clearly stated
Gradually, rules to protect creators are beginning to be put in place here as well
While such regulations are being progressively developed both in the U.S. and Japan, on the other hand, jobs that are not being replaced by AI
and are being re-evaluated are blue-collar jobs, skilled trades and on-site work. For example
people in construction, transportation, manufacturing, and so on
The median annual income in the United States
is about 8 million yen, but for example, those who install and repair power transmission lines
15.1 million yen. As for elevator and escalator technicians
which is about double the overall median, showing they are being re-evaluated
Looking at the U.S., I feel that the jobs students aspire to may also be changing a bit, but Ms. Yoshida, what do you think about that?
Yes. Here in America, blue-collar work is indeed being re-evaluated
To acquire a trade,
more young people are going to vocational training schools to learn specialized skills
Enrollment numbers are also increasing
They are now growing at a higher rate than university enrollments
As for what kind of developments will occur in Japan, we spoke with expert Mr. Kashimamura
He said that a situation like that in the U.S. may arrive within a few years. He also said that wages for so-called white-collar office workers
may stagnate
However, in Japan, regulations on dismissal are strict, so rather than layoffs, personnel reassignment is expected
People who worked on computers may be replaced by AI, and shift to sales jobs involving face-to-face negotiation, so such reassignments are expected
That is what he said
Looking at Hollywood, I really remember the large-scale strikes by screenwriters and actors just a few years ago
Even though various rules have been created since then, AI is evolving far, far faster than that speed
so I think it is a serious issue how we face it
We also work using our voices
Mr. Hashizume, how do you think about dealing with AI? Well, to speak honestly, for example there are news programs
When a major disaster occurs, we come into the office. But during that time, of course, 20 or 30 minutes
There's time. And during that time, I want AI to, even one second sooner,
speak as a speaker, and if it can save even one more person, I actually feel somewhere that I'd like to ask for that. But I'm now torn with the feeling that people have to convey it
And for content, there's now audio description. For visually impaired people,
reading a huge amount of text is still quite a lot of work for a person
So, having AI take over that kind of work is one option, I think
What do you think? Noma-san, there's live commentary too. Yes. Until now, among announcers' duties, sports commentary has been called a kind of last stronghold, but objectively,
But as mentioned earlier, AI is evolving to convey emotion,
so in just a few years, or in about years, it could be replaced. That's exactly why we have to improve our skills, and if we become able to use it, how to use it
within the company,
and so on
I think establishing rules within the company and overall is really important. There is definitely a right person - or AI - for the right job, whether AI or human
Rather than looking ahead, I thought that by building up what we can do now, we might find a better way to engage with it
