So right away, please tell us what kind of company Taisei Corporation is
Our company Taisei Corporation was founded in 1873 by Kiichiro Okura
It started as Okura-gumi Shokai, then became the first in Japan to use the word construction in its company name as Taisei Corporation, and has led the construction industry

and the Bosphorus Strait rail tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey. Those are all structures I've heard of. Yes
Under the catchphrase 'work that remains on the map,'
we support people's lives through buildings and social infrastructure. General contractors tend to be seen as science-oriented companies, but
about 25% of our employees are from humanities backgrounds, and there are plenty of fields where not only technical staff but also humanities staff in administration and sales can thrive
This technology, this scale only exists at a major contractor. Is there an experience on site that overwhelmed you? At Shinjuku's west exit

In that,
I feel the high level of our company's technical capabilities
we also do a lot of work that doesn't remain on the map
For example, renovation work
making existing buildings into new value, and there was the demolition of the Akasaka Prince Hotel, using our company's TECOLLEP system,
a method to demolish gradually from the top without making noise, and we do construction with high technology
Our company is also very strong in the engineering field, and among them, we are particularly strong in aquariums
Our company developed technology to turn fresh water into seawater,

restoration and reconstruction work after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Noto earthquake, after all that kind of social infrastructure

the foundation, right away
rebuild it, since it's closely tied to people's daily lives after all
we are tackling that kind of work as our social mission
The overwhelming scale of Taisei Corporation, which handles landmarks everyone knows
From here, we look at how the environment for employees working on the front lines is evolving — the era of corporate culture reform
Now, let's move on to the first theme
This is the reality of Taisei Corporation's corporate culture reform
First, we surveyed university students on their image of general contractors and Taisei Corporation, so please take a look at this VTR
Do you know what kind of company Taisei Corporation is? It's the first time I've heard of it, but probably construction or something. Japan's
I think it's a company that supports various infrastructure. Since it has 'construction' in the name,
I have an image that it's a company doing land management, like a developer or urban development
When you hear 'general contractor,' what image of working style do you have?
It seems like it would be hard to take paid leave, and work-life balance doesn't seem very achievable. Since it seems like a large-scale company, I have an image that it's busy
Since it's an industry that builds cities,
I think it's a big industry with a sense of purpose. When I hear construction, I have more of an image of it being plain or physical labor, that it seems tough
Seniority-based, or that older people have power
strong, or something like that — that's an image I just thought of a little
You've seen it, but what do you all think? Awareness was a bit low,
I think that's a bit of an issue. The people in the first half didn't know about our company at all
There were also images like it seems hard to take paid leave or hard to balance work and life — how is it actually?
On an annual basis, most employees take about 136 days
off. Oh, is that so? By the way, this year's Golden Week,
I had 12 days off in a row, and how about you, Shima-san or Sasaki-san, for Golden Week? I
was the same. I think we're now able to take solid long breaks during major holidays
Many people even go abroad for fun. Yes. This is the same for site workers, since construction itself stops,
both site workers and office workers
have those long holidays
secured, I think. How about seniority? I also have an image that
the hierarchy seems strict. That's exactly what we're trying to change now with the culture reform
We're right now creating a corporate culture where employees can speak freely and with peace of mind
right now
How did the corporate culture reform come about? President Mizukawa
took the lead
and declared that we would carry out corporate culture reform
It was declared
Who the workers are, you know. I have this. Director Torishima, he really taught us. At first, at first, it's not that he himself wasn't serious
Through internal communications, 314 people
said they wanted to participate in culture reform, and that's how it started. In the end, 10 task force members gathered and spent about half a year
discussing thoroughly, and decided to aim for a corporate culture that respects people. Through this process,
in July of that year, the Culture Reform Promotion Department was established
So, this is a department directly under the president, and it is currently working to spread culture reform across the whole company. What kind of specific initiatives are you doing?
Since we're here,
I'd like to introduce it using the flip chart. Yes, please.
The culture reform we are working on is this.
First, please start with the first one.
The first one is this.
It's 'Employee voices change the company.'
This is what we value most in culture reform. Direct dialogue between employees and management has been
implemented since September 2023.
Management directly senses what employees are feeling,
We're using that feedback as an opportunity to change the company.
Ultimately, we're a company of about 9,000 people, and we'd like to connect this to a movement to make a better company by having all employees and executives exchange opinions.
For example, opinions raised through employee voices were also reflected in the HR system reform, right? Yes. In April 2025,
the new HR system started, and this HR system reform and the culture reform have been advanced as two wheels of the same car.
In response to employee voices saying they want to work according to their life plans,
with the aim of creating an environment where each employee can work more comfortably and with peace of mind, a work location selection system
and expansion of transfer allowances
and so on were implemented.
Is there anything else? As a bottom-up activity, we have organized Food Reform Working Groups
at headquarters and branches nationwide. To improve their own workplace environment, they are promoting wellness
and we are also seeing moves to reduce workload through surveys on business improvement.
But it's not just about exchanging opinions and ending there,
we are cycling through properly connecting those voices
to changes in the company, so we'd like to continue this on an ongoing basis.
Next, please explain the second one. Yes, the second one is this.
It's 'Create free dialogue through systems.'
Our attire, we're casual now,
but we started liberalizing the dress code in December 2024.
And this too was requested by employees,
and was adopted by the company as a system.
Does the atmosphere in the office change completely just by changing clothes? With everyone in office casual,
I feel it's become much easier to talk. After all, with suits every day,
it feels stiff,
but when it's free, there's less pressure on your shoulders, and people try to communicate more casually in appearance too, so it's been
well received by everyone. What other systems are there? We encourage officers and employees to call each other with '-san.' Calling each other with -san makes it
easier to consult casually and talk, so we encourage that. About two weeks ago I participated in the opinion exchange meeting for the first time,
and an employee asked the president, 'Aikawa-san, what do you think about this?' and the president answered frankly, and seeing that dialogue
up close, I was shocked that
opinion exchanges with executives are held in such an atmosphere. As another initiative, the president's treat vending machine,
というものを
which
we have now installed company-wide. We call this the flat vending machine, where two employees as a pair
tap their employee ID cards on the vending machine and get drinks for free.
You can get them
once a week, that's the kind of initiative we're doing.
Between employees,
we introduced it as a measure to allow flat, casual communication.
Are you all actually using the flat vending machine? Yes, having the flat vending machine makes you say, 'Let's go get a drink,'
so it becomes an opportunity for conversation, and I feel it's a good system. For refreshment too,
in terms of interaction, within the company,
we have also created a place where people can freely exchange opinions using it. It's a corporate culture reform community called Amikomi.
You can post with photos in a way like this, and with text,
you can add supplementary explanations and such,
and logs are kept so you can view them anytime. So when a construction site is completed, when it's finished, sharing the completion ceremony with everyone,
or sharing with everyone,
like we're struggling with this, can someone lend us some wisdom, there are posts like that too.
I think that communication was born because of that tool.
Now, please tell us about the third one last. Yes.
The third one is this.
Yes, a comfortable space that connects people.
Exactly this cafeteria space has become a comfortable space that connects people, and this cafeteria was renovated and reopened in January 2025,
It's not just a place to eat, but it's designed to make it easy for employees to communicate even outside of meals.

Ms. Sasaki, you've been with Taisei Corporation for 19 years now, so you've been here a long time, but do you feel the way of working and atmosphere have changed a lot? They've changed a lot.
I really never had opportunities to talk with executives, so being able to deliver employees' voices to management is a big change, I think.

I felt that the employees take great pride in the field, and that even employees from humanities backgrounds can have a passion for manufacturing,
so I thought I'd love to join this company and be involved in manufacturing with that same passion.
I have a fairly strong image of it being a sports-club-like culture, but how is it actually?

Yes.
Work-style reform has progressed

With the introduction of overtime regulations, did you first notice any changes in terms of work?
On site, before inspections or around the end of the fiscal year, there are periods when work does pile up,
but even during such periods, it's not about managing it all by yourself, but sharing the work as a team
and working hard together to improve on the issue of overtime regulations.

There is an image that you can earn well from a young age, but how is it actually? The salary level has been rising year by year with base pay increases,

In the most recent financial results we achieved record-high profits, so I hope it will continue to rise.

For transfers, since we have work sites all over the country,
even if you are assigned to a site, you will receive a solid site allowance,
so I think there's no need to worry even if you work far away.
Are there opportunities to participate in work overseas?
Regardless of humanities or science background, there are many opportunities to take on challenges overseas from a young age.
For administrative staff, there is an overseas training opportunity available from the first year as a new employee.
For building construction, I think opportunities increase from around the sixth or seventh year.
For civil engineering as well, if you wish, after training in the first year, there are chances to go abroad as a young employee in the second or third year.
