This is a consultation received from a man in his 40s.
両目りょうめが失明しつめいへと向むかっております。
Both of his eyes are heading toward blindness.
私わたしは視覚障害者しかくしょうがいしゃの親おやの元もとに生うまれ、生うまれつき目めの障害しょうがいを持もっています。
I was born to parents with visual impairments, and I have had an eye disability since birth.
現在げんざいは一人暮ひとりぐらしをしております。
I currently live alone.
これまでに16回かいにわたる手術しゅじゅつを受うけ、
I have undergone 16 surgeries so far,
一時期いちじきは車くるまの免許めんきょが取とれるほどまで回復かいふくをしたのですが、10
at one point I recovered enough to be able to get a driver's license, but about 10
年ねんほど前まえから左目ひだりめ、3年さんねんほど前まえから右目みぎめが難病なんびょうにより失明しつめいへ向むかっているのです。

my range of activity has become extremely narrow, and despite having many hobbies, I have become unable to do any hobbies,
困惑こんわくと不安ふあんの中なかで生活せいかつをしております。
and I am living in confusion and anxiety.
他ほかにも成長過程せいちょうかていで親おやからの虐待ぎゃくたいが多おおく、
I also suffered a lot of abuse from my parents while growing up,
大学進学だいがくしんがくなどもあきらめざるを得えない家庭環境かていかんきょうがあったせいか自尊心じそんしんを持もてず存在意義そんざいいぎを満みたせないまま精神せいしんを病やみ、
and perhaps because of a family environment that forced me to give up on going to university and such, I could not hold self-esteem and could not fulfill a sense of purpose, and my mind became ill,
精神科病院せいしんかびょういんにも行いっております。

日常生活にちじょうせいかつにおいても夜よるの歩行ほこうが困難こんなんになってきておりますし、コンセントを差さし込こめないという事ことすら起おきております。
In daily life as well, walking at night has become difficult, and even things like being unable to plug in an electrical outlet are happening.
何度なんども自死じしを考かんがえましたが、ここまでできることがない現実げんじつは死しんでいるのと大差たいさはないと考かんがえるようになりました。
I have thought of suicide many times, but I have come to think that a reality where I can do nothing this far is little different from being dead.
ただできることは静しずかに生活せいかつすること、それだけなのです。
The only thing I can do is to live quietly, that is all.
私わたしは何なんのために生うまれ、人生じんせいは何なんのためにあるのでしょうか。
What was I born for, and what is life for?
利他りたの道みちにすら進すすめず、ただ毎日まいにちを不安ふあんと戦たたかい、
Unable to even proceed on the path of altruism, just fighting anxiety every day,
些細ささいなことすらできなくなっていく日々ひびに戸惑とまどいと恐怖きょうふを感かんじるだけの人生じんせい。
it is a life of only feeling bewilderment and fear in days when I become unable to do even trivial things.
家族かぞくに理解りかいを求もとめても理解りかいされず、仕事しごともなく学がくもなく金かねもなく優すぐれた人格者じんかくしゃでもなく、
Even if I seek understanding from my family, I am not understood, with no job, no education, no money, nor being a person of excellent character,
このままいずれは死しんでいくという現実げんじつに過去かこ未来みらいそして現在げんざいにおいても自分じぶんの存在意義そんざいいぎを見みつけられずにおります。
and in the reality that I will just die like this, I cannot find meaning in my existence in the past, future, or present.
私わたしは何なんのために生いきているのでしょうか。
What am I living for?
六根ろっこんという言葉ことばがあります。
There is a term called the six senses.
六根ろっこんというのは私わたしたちの体からだについている感覚かんかく器官きかん、
The six senses are the sensory organs attached to our bodies,
それを仏教ぶっきょうが表現ひょうげんした言葉ことばです。
it is a term Buddhism used to express them.
眼め耳鼻じび舌した身み意い
Eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind
この私わたしたち
These, our
の体からだに備そなわっている感覚かんかく器官きかん、目め耳鼻じび口舌こうぜつそして肌はだの感覚かんかく
sensory organs equipped in the body — eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tongue, and the sensation of the skin
そして
and
心こころ。
the mind.
この心こころも感覚かんかく器官きかんの一ひとつとして仏教ぶっきょうは捉とらえたんですね。
Buddhism regarded this mind also as one of the sensory organs.
この私わたしたちがまあ現代げんだいの言葉ことばでは五感ごかんなんて言いってます。
Using these, what we in modern words call the five senses,
この五感ごかんを使つかって、そして外そとの
and using these five senses, and from the outside
世界せかいから飛とび込こんでくるさまざまな刺激しげき、そしてまた
various stimuli flying in from the world, and also
私わたしたちのこの内側うちがわ
this inside of us
内臓ないぞうの感覚かんかくとでも言いいましょうか内側うちがわの感覚かんかくを感かんじ取とっていく。
shall we say the sensation of the internal organs, the inner sensations, we sense them.
でそうやって私わたしたちはこの五感ごかんを通つうじて六根ろっこんを通つうじて
And in this way, through these five senses, through the six senses,
さまざまな外そとの刺激しげき情報じょうほうに触ふれ自分じぶんにとって
we come into contact with various external stimuli and information, and for ourselves,
危害きがいのあるもの、それを避さけ、
we avoid what is harmful to us,
そして自分じぶんにとって心地ここちいいものを求もとめて生いきているというのが命いのちのありようです。
and seek what feels pleasant to us — that is the way life is.
まあこの六根ろっこんのうち、最もっとも
Well, among these six senses, the most
大おおきく
largely
普通ふつう私わたしたちが特とくに現代げんだいの人ひとたちは
ordinarily, we, especially people today,
依存いぞんしている、頼たよっている感覚かんかく器官きかんが視覚しかく情報じょうほうだと思おもいます。
depend on, rely on, I think is visual information.
視覚しかくだと思おもいます。
I think it is vision.
その目めが
That eyes
視力しりょくを失うしなっていくっていうのは本当ほんとうに絶望ぜつぼうに近ちかい恐怖きょうふだろうと思おもいます。
losing eyesight must be a terror close to despair.
私わたしも小ちいさいときから
I too, ever since I was small,
妄想もうそうの多おおい、恐おそれの多おおい子供こどもでしたから、
was a child full of fantasies and full of fears, so,
誰だれか例たとえば
if, for example, I met an elderly person with disabled legs at a temple,
足あしの不自由ふじゆうな高齢者こうれいしゃの方ほうにお寺てらで会あうと、
I would think, ah, someday I too might lose my legs like that, might become unable to move,
ああいつか自分じぶんもああやって足あしがなくなるかもな、動うごかなくなるかもなとか、
when I met someone without an arm, ah, what if I too lost my left arm,
腕うでがない方ほうに会あうと、ああ自分じぶんも左腕ひだりうでがなくなったらどうしようとか、
if there was someone who could not see, ah, what would I do if someday my eyes were gone like that,
目めが見みえない方ほうがあれば、ああ自分じぶんもいつかああやって目めがなくなったらどうするんだろうとか、
thinking about all sorts of things, I was terrified beyond help — I actually spent my childhood that way.
いろんなことを考かんがえると怖こわくて仕方しかたがないっていうそういう実じつは子供こどもの時代じだいを過すごしました。
We say 'sound in body and mind,' but.
五体満足ごたいまんぞくなんて言いいますけれども。
Truly, we
本当ほんとうに私わたしたちは
only after losing it do we feel for the first time that our body
失うしなって初はじめて自分じぶんの体からだが
only after losing it do we feel how precious it is
ちゃんと機能きのうしてるそれぞれの器官きかんがちゃんと機能きのうしてるっていうことのありがたさを感かんじます。
that our body is functioning properly, that each organ is functioning properly.
博はくさんの相談そうだん文ぶんを
As I read Hiroshi's letter seeking advice,
読よんでいるとある一ひとつの言葉ことばが連呼れんこされています繰くり返かえされているんです。
there is one word that is repeated over and over, reiterated.
その

繰くり返かえされている言葉ことばは何なにか
repeated word, what is it —
まさにそこに博はくさんが今いま陥おちいってる致いたし方かたのないことですけれどもそこに陥おちいってる。
it is only natural that Hiroshi is now trapped in it, unavoidable as it is, but he is trapped there.
それを象徴しょうちょうするように一ひとつの言葉ことばが何度なんども何度なんども登場とうじょうします。

それはどんな言葉ことばかって言いうとないという言葉ことばです。

仕事しごとがない、学がくがない、お金かねがない、理解者りかいしゃがいない、できることが減へっていく。
No job, no education, no money, no one who understands me, the things I can do keep decreasing.
ないないない。
"Don't have, don't have, don't have."
大おおいに頼たよっていた視力しりょくを失うしないつつあることによって、すべてがなくなって、
By losing the eyesight he had so greatly relied upon, everything is gone,
自分じぶんは何なにも持もってない。
I have nothing at all.
そのようにして
In that way,
どんどん自分じぶんでパニックに陥おちいっていっておられる。
he is driving himself more and more into panic.
博はくさんのような状態じょうたいになれば、そのような心境しんきょうになるのは当然とうぜんだと思おもいます。
If one were in Hiroshi's state, it would be natural to feel that way.
でもね、博はくさんは
But, Hiroshi,
自分じぶんの親おやが元々もともと
your own parent originally
視覚しかくに障害しょうがいを持もっておられた、そこにハンディキャップを持もっておられたということですよね。

自分じぶんの親おやを身近みぢかに見みて育そだってるわけなんです。

じゃあ視覚障害者しかくしょうがいしゃのお父とうさんかお母かあさんかしれませんけれども、

Your parents did allow you to have the surgery, didn't they.
博はくさんは仕事しごとがない学がくがない金かねがない理解者りかいしゃがいない。
You say, Hiroshi, that you have no job, no education, no money, no one who understands you.
視力しりょくも失うしなっていくと嘆なげいておられますけど、
You lament that you are also losing your eyesight, but
自分じぶんが視力しりょくを失うしなう前まえは
before you yourself lost your vision
多趣味たしゅみで
you were multi-talented
いろんなことができてたって書かいておられますよね。

でも
But
そう思おもうと本当ほんとうに博はくさんは学がくがなくて
thinking about that, is it really true that you, Hiroshi, have no education,
金かねがなくて理解者りかいしゃもいなくてできることがないんでしょうかね。
no money, no one who understands you, and nothing you can do?
多分たぶん違ちがうと思おもうんですよ。

ご両親りょうしんは

自分じぶんが自分じぶんたちが
that you yourself, that they themselves
できなかった分ぶんまで。
for the part they couldn't do.
子こどもには体験たいけんさせてやりたい、そう思おもって子育こそだてをなさって来こられたのではないでしょうかね。
wanted to let their child experience it — isn't that how they raised you?
けれども、
But,
やっぱり博はくさんだってね、視力しりょくを失うしないつつある中なかで絶望的ぜつぼうてきになって、
still, Hiroshi, as you are losing your sight you have become despairing,
普通ふつうの人ひとなら何なんでもなくできることができなくなっていく、すごいストレスだと思おもうんですよ。
no longer able to do what ordinary people can do without thinking — I think that is tremendous stress.
生うまれつき目めが見みえなかったではなくて、見みえてたものが見みえなくなっていくので、余計よけいその絶望ぜつぼう感かんが大おおきいんだと思おもうんです。
It is not that you were blind from birth, but that what you could see is becoming invisible, so the sense of despair is all the greater.
だけれども、
However,
そこに

六本ろっぽんのうちの大おおきな大おおきな一貫いっかんではありますが、それを失うしないつつあることによって、他ほかのものが全部ぜんぶ否定ひていしてしまう。
it is one big, huge part out of the six, but by losing it, you deny everything else.
あるものに目めを向むけない、ないものにずっと目めを向むけ続つづける。
You don't look at what you have, you keep looking only at what you don't have.
そのような循環じゅんかんに今いま入はいってしまわれているんです
You have now entered into that kind of cycle.

Hey.
40代だい、まだまだ人生じんせいを諦あきらめる年としではありません。
Your 40s is not yet an age to give up on life.
むしろこれまで自分じぶんが
Rather, up until now you yourself
経験けいけんしてきた趣味しゅみも含ふくめて、いろんなことを経験けいけんしてきたはずなんですよ。
must have experienced many things, including the hobbies you have experienced.
40年ねん、その中なかで
In those 40 years, within that,
必かならず
surely
博はくさんが持もっている何なにがしかの能力のうりょくや感性かんせいってものがあるはずなんです。
there must be some ability or sensitivity that you, Hiroshi, possess.
もちろん

目めは見みえなくなっていく。
your eyes are going blind.
だけれども耳みみは聞きこえるでしょ。
But you can still hear with your ears, right?
おそらく博はくさんが
Probably you, Hiroshi,
私わたしが

博はくさんの相談そうだんに対たいしてこうして答こたえているその情報じょうほう線せんをずっと心待こころまちにしてると思おもうんですけど、これを目めで見みえなくても耳みみで聞きくでしょ。
I think you have been eagerly waiting for this information channel where I am thus answering your consultation, and even if you cannot see it with your eyes, you hear it with your ears, right?
そして全身ぜんしんに何なにかを感かんじるはずなんですよ。
And you must feel something with your whole body.
目めが見みえないでも耳みみは聞きこえる。
Even if you cannot see, you can hear.
目めは見みえないでも鼻はなは利きく。
Even if you cannot see, your nose works.
目めは見みえないでも舌したで物ものを味あじわうことができる。
Even if you cannot see, you can taste things with your tongue.
目めは見みえないでも自分じぶんの肌はだで
Even if you cannot see, with your own skin
熱気ねっき物もの。
hot things.
冷つめたいもの、
cold things,
尖とがったもの、
pointed things,
滑なめらかなもの、柔やわらかいもの、硬かたいもの、
smooth things, soft things, hard things,
長ながいもの、短みじかいもの、さまざまなものに触ふれることができる。
long things, short things, you can touch various things.
そして、その心こころで悲かなしんでいるもの、苦くるしんでいるもの、喜よろこんでいるもの、
And, with that heart, what grieves, what suffers, what rejoices,
さまざまな心こころにそれを感かんじることができる。
you can feel it in various hearts.
おそらく目めが見みえなくなれば、なるほど残のこりの
Probably the more you lose your sight, the more the remaining
六根ろっこんのうちの残のこりの五ご根ねがどんどん繊細せんさいになっていくことだと思おもいます。
of the six senses, the remaining five senses will become more and more delicate.
博はくさんに対たいして私わたしは悲観ひかんするなとは言いいません。
I won't tell you, Hiroshi, not to be pessimistic.
それは本当ほんとうに目めを失うしなうっていうことは視力しりょくを失うしなうということは大変たいへんなことだと思おもいます。
Losing your eyesight, losing your vision, is truly a terrible thing.
私わたしもいろんな怪我けがをして車椅子くるまいすだった時期じきもあるし、腕うでが動うごかなかった時期じきもあるし、でも本当ほんとうに足あしが一本いっぽん骨折こっせつをするだけで、
I've had various injuries myself, there was a time I was in a wheelchair, a time my arm wouldn't move, but truly just breaking one leg,
肩かたが片方かたほう脱臼だっきゅうするだけで、
just dislocating one shoulder,
骨ほねを一いっか所しょ折おるだけでものすごい不自由ふじゆうです。
just breaking a bone in one place is incredibly inconvenient.
ものすごいストレスです。
It's incredibly stressful.
それが目めを失うしなうってことになったら。
And if it comes to losing your eyes.
それはもう本当ほんとうの苦くるしみだと思おもいます。
That is truly real suffering.
博はくさんは死しぬかと思おもった。
Hiroshi thought he would die.
だけどもうそもそも何なにもできない。
But already he can't do anything at all.
死しんだも一緒いっしょでしょ。
It's the same as being dead.
そこまで苦くるしんだ。
He suffered that much.
だとしたらもうないものではなくて、これからはあるものに目めを向むけていかなければならない。
If that's the case, don't focus on what is gone, you must turn your eyes to what you still have.
あるものに目めを向むけていった方ほうがいい。
You should focus on what you have.
少しょう棒線ぼうせんです。
It's a foul line.
何なんのために生いきるのかということを問とう前まえに、今いまの自分じぶんには何なにがあるのかを自分じぶんに問もんってください。
Before asking what you live for, ask yourself what you have right now.
目めが見みえなかったら人ひとの役やくに立たてないんですか。
If you can't see, can't you be of use to others?
学歴がくれきがなかったら価値かちがないんですか。
If you have no education, do you have no worth?
お金かねがなかったら人ひとを励はげませないんですか。
If you have no money, can't you encourage people?
これまたご自身じしんが味あじわった苦くるしみも、
And the suffering you yourself have tasted,
誰だれかの苦くるしみを理解りかいするには十分じゅうぶんな経験けいけんになり得えるじゃないですか。
couldn't that become sufficient experience to understand someone else's suffering?
さあ、今いまの自分じぶんに何なにがあるのか、それを
Now, what do you have right now, take that
自分じぶんで録音ろくおんして
record it yourself
聞きいてみてください。
and try listening to it.
文字もじがもし目めが見みえなくて書かけないならば、録音機ろくおんきを使つかってそこに自分じぶんができることを、自分じぶんが持もっているものを
If you can't see and can't write letters, use a recorder and there, the things you can do, the things you possess
全部ぜんぶ全部ぜんぶ棚卸たなおろしするんです。

そして

失うしなっていくことを嘆なげくのではなくて、目めを失うしなう準備じゅんびをしてください。

一ひとつ目めはロールモデルを探さがしてください。
The first is, please find a role model.
自分じぶんの前例ぜんれいを探さがしてください。
Find someone who has gone before you.
視覚しかくを失うしなった後あとも働はたらき、学まなび、人ひとと関かかわってるっていう人ひとがいるはずです。
There must be people who work, learn, and connect with others even after losing their sight.
世よの中なかにはご両親りょうしんをはじめ
In this world, starting with your parents
六ろく人にんのうちの
among the six
大おおきな大おおきな働はたらきをしていた視覚しかくを失うしなったその後ごも、相変あいかわらず働はたらき、
who did great, great work and lost their sight, and after that still work,
学まなび、人ひとと関かかわってる、
learn, and connect with people,
大おおいに関かかわってる、そういう人ひとがいるはずなんです。
connect deeply, there must be such people.
自分じぶんよりも10年ねん先さきを行いってる人ひと、20年ねん先さきを行いっておられる先輩せんぱいが必かならずいらっしゃいます。
There are surely seniors who are 10 years ahead of you, 20 years ahead of you.
どんな人ひとがいるのか、どうやって生活せいかつしておられるのか、どうやって視覚しかくを失うしなってもなお
Find that role model — what kind of people are out there, how they live, how even after losing their sight
生いき生いきと生いきておられるのか、そのロールモデルを探さがしてください。
they live vibrantly.
二ふたつ目めの手順てじゅん、ステップは何なにかというと、
The second procedure, step, what is it,
残のこされた五感ごかんを徹底てっていして磨みがいてください。
thoroughly hone your remaining five senses.
聴覚ちょうかく、触覚しょっかく、身体しんたい感覚かんかく、声こえ、言葉ことば、人ひとの
Please cultivate hearing, touch, bodily sensation, voice, words, people's
感情かんじょう、心こころを感かんじるそういう力ちからを育そだててください。
emotions, the power to feel hearts.
コンセントを差させない。
You can't plug in the cord.
それは失うしなっていく、失うしないつつある視力しりょくに頼たよってるからじゃないですか。
Isn't that because you're relying on your fading, failing eyesight?
見みえなくてもコンセントを差させる方法ほうほうはないですか。
Is there no way to plug it in even without seeing?
目め以外いがいの感覚かんかく器官きかんを使つかってコンセントにたどり着つき、コンセントを差さすという
To reach an outlet and plug it in using sensory organs other than the eyes,
そのための方法ほうほうはありませんか。
Isn't there a way to do that?
一ひとつのできないを人生じんせい全体ぜんたいの絶望ぜつぼうに広ひろめてしまう。
Spreading one inability into despair for your entire life.
これが一番いちばんの悲惨ひさんの問題もんだいなんです。
This is the most miserable problem.
さあ、ステップ4です。
Now, step 4.
四よつ目めは何なにかというと、使つかえるものは何なんでも使つかうんです。

Whether everything was written in a school textbook, whether everything comes up if you search the internet.
人生じんせいにとって本当ほんとうに大事だいじなことはそこに書かいてないんです。
What is truly important in life is not written there.
それを聞きき、耳みみを澄すませて聞きき、嗅かぎ、
Listen to it, listen carefully, smell it,
味あじわい、感かんじる。
taste it, feel it.
その力ちからが視覚しかく情報じょうほうにあまりにも頼たよりすぎていることによって、視覚しかくに頼たよりすぎていることによって開ひらかないんです。

そういう人ひとがこれからの時代じだいは貴重きちょうなんです。
such people are precious in the era to come.
先決せんけつ論ろんです。

Please change your way of living, from a life of desperately counting what you don't have, to a life of polishing what you do have.
目めが見みえなくなっていくことを、そのことを嘆なげくだけの人生じんせい、これはもう十分じゅうぶん練習れんしゅうしました。
A life of only lamenting that you are losing your sight — you have already practiced that enough.
もうその時期じきは終おわりました。
That period is already over.
これからは
From now on,
目めが見みえないからこそ、何なにが見みえるのか、何なにが聞きこえるのか、
precisely because you cannot see, what can you see, what can you hear,
どんな香かおりがするのか、何なにが感かんじられるのか、それを探さがしに行いってください。
what kind of scent is there, what can you feel — please go and search for that.
そして一年いちねん後ごできるようになったことをもう一度いちど私わたしに教おしえてください。
And one year from now, please tell me again what you have become able to do.
