Today, a frank talk with Class of 2027 grads who got offers from top companies about why they changed their target industries this fall. In the summer
I decided to just keep applying to industries I hadn't passed in before, so in fall and winter I especially applied to industries like advertising
and TV stations.
In early selection I got about three offers in really about a week, and I thought,
I should take on the challenge of trading companies —
I heard a voice from heaven telling me so.

I'm Akita, Class of 2027. My offer industry is consulting. Nice to meet you. I'm Shuhei, Class of 2027.
I got offers in consulting and advertising. Nice to meet you.
About a year ago around this time, I think there were already some fast-moving people around you who had offers. Didn't you feel anxious?
In my case, well, being from MARCH,
there still weren't really
many people around me with offers, so I don't think I felt that much焦り. Around me, quite a few friends were starting to get offers from mega-ventures,
so while there weren't many of them, I did feel a bit anxious. Around me, really as of September,
most people already had offers, had satisfying offers, but I didn't have a satisfying offer yet, so I felt really anxious.
I think it takes courage to narrow down or change your focus, but did you have no hesitation about that?
I really struggled with that. I was really torn about whether to narrow down my industries.
Because, through summer internships and such,
I felt from the bottom of my heart that the industry I most wanted to join was the trading company industry,
but I was also scared to focus solely on trading companies. It was a time when I was really torn.
I also participated in several summer internships, including in the consulting industry, and through that, my personality and the people around me
just didn't quite match, I felt, so I think I figured out at the summer stage which industries didn't suit me.
I see. As for me, after going through summer internships, I actually ended up
expanding my industries instead. Taking a completely different path from those around me made me a bit anxious, but I was following my curiosity about what I wanted to do.
about what I wanted to do during this period.
After summer, I was living with the mindset that I had to narrow down my industries, so I was
participating in summer internships with that premise, but I felt like through the summer internships,
I couldn't really develop that attachment to my target industries,
and I couldn't really
narrow down my target industries between before summer and after summer,
so I think there was a part of me that was焦り about that.
so I couldn't really narrow down my target industries
I see, so you all had a time when you were unsure. Today, I'd like to dig deeper into how you changed your strategies from there and won your offers.
So you all had a time when you were unsure too. Today, I want to dig deeper into how you changed your strategy from there to win job offers
First, I'd like you all to reveal at once on flip boards your target industries before summer and as of November.
Here you go. Ta-da!
おお
Ohh.
My impression is that pretty much everyone was looking broadly at first. Right. That's the image. Though there's one exception.
Completely different.
By the way, Yuto, you were looking at all industries,
so is there a reason you narrowed it down to developers
and finance?
Yes. I did have a core criterion: I wanted to work in urban development, and among that, companies where I could be involved in large-scale projects.
いうので
so I say
Well, I was looking at various industries, and finance and developers had postings in developed areas, so including that, I ended up
narrowing it down to finance and developers in the end. So similarly, Akita-san, I think you narrowed it down from a wide range of
industries to about three, could you tell us why?
Yes. Well, through summer internships and
well, through interviews with various HR people, as I kept refining what kind of work I wanted to do as my job-hunting criteria,
the industries that happened to come out were the ones I mentioned earlier, like Sazai, which is consulting, that's all it feels like,
I wasn't particularly narrowing down industries from the start, so I think it was more something that came out as a result.
I feel like you have a clear criterion now, but did you have that from the beginning?
placeholder
placeholder
At the very beginning, I only had a really vague criterion, if you can even call it that, of just wanting to solve something for someone, and I went into the summer internship with that,
well, I thought I'd try to understand what kind of
well, what kind of job solves what kind of problems, but it didn't really click for me as much as I expected, and I kind of left it alone,
well, a mentor in HR confronted me pretty directly about that,
and in the end I was even told something like, you just showed up without thinking about anything,
I even had an interview where I was nearly in tears, but well, having my back pushed like
that made me think about it seriously, and as a result,
I still remember it vividly even now, around the second week of September, my job-hunting criteria suddenly became clear,
and from there I was able to move on to the main selection process without hesitation.
Taiyo-san,
you ended up focusing solely on trading companies, what was the background for that?
There were a few industries I
thought I wanted to join,
but I got about three early offers in about a week from companies where I really thought I'd like to work,
and I heard a voice from heaven telling me I should challenge myself with trading companies,
so I took on the challenge.
So then, you gained a bit of confidence in yourself and found the courage to narrow it down completely. Yes, I really think that's exactly it, once I got offers in November I decided myself
to focus on trading companies,
so I think those offers pushed me to narrow it down to trading companies. As for criteria, I honestly had a clear one, for me,
since a trading company has lots of subsidiaries, there's a career path prepared to become president of a subsidiary,
so I was aiming for that, and also being able to work overseas was very attractive to me. Was that there from the beginning,
or did that criterion emerge right when you narrowed it down?
At first I wasn't thinking about this at all, and how I arrived at this criterion was, I listed three people close to me
whom I respect. I extracted the common elements among those people, and then set an ideal of wanting to become
like that, and I think that's how I created and decided on my criteria. What kind of relationship were those people you respect?
Could you name one person close to you whom you respect?
An older guy who was at the Brazilian restaurant where I worked part-time,
he's around 50 years old,
and I was working part-time there when suddenly a 50-year-old joined as a newcomer,
I thought some freeter had joined, but he was incredibly powerful and energetic,
he'd eat things like macarai with the student staff and
he'd jump right in there alone and get the conversation going.
placeholder

placeholder
placeholder
placeholder
placeholder
placeholder
placeholder
When I asked what he used to do, he said he worked at a general trading company and was stationed in Brazil for four years
That's where he decided he wanted to do Brazilian cuisine, so now he's here training
Even though he left that stable path, the way he's chasing his dream
I thought there must be lots of powerful people like that at trading companies, so in that sense I thought trading companies were great, and I thought there must be lots of people I could respect
What I'm curious about is Shuhei
You went from consulting to TV advertising, so you've broadened out in the opposite direction and completely changed what you're applying to for job hunting
How did that happen? I think my university is a bit unique
Since it's a top university in Japan after all
when it comes to job hunting
everyone has a lot of pride
もう
already
If you're a Todai student, then
とか
like
like it's taken for granted that you'll join a foreign investment bank or somewhere and earn a ton
I kept hearing that kind of value system from seniors in my club and in my department
I thought that was just normal, so at first I didn't apply to foreign banks, but I applied to consulting, like MBB and the Big Four
places like that
were the main ones I kept applying to
なんか
well
The biggest trigger was actually at a manufacturer, and through getting involved with lots of people there, I realized there are tons of jobs that look really fun and could pay well in the future, completely outside consulting or foreign banks
that
By the very end of the summer internships, I tried applying to advertising and TV stations too, but I didn't get in at all
but I did get an offer from consulting at that point
so I thought consulting was fine for now
and since I'm the type who gets curious about new things
I decided to keep applying to industries I didn't get into during the summer, and in autumn and winter I focused especially on advertising
and TV stations
Applying to a new industry seems super
risky, but didn't you feel scared about that
It was definitely really scary, but one thing, same as Taito, at that point
I had already gotten an offer from consulting, which pushed me forward
and also, consulting
was something I only applied to because of the people around me
whereas what I'd been most interested in my whole life was variety shows and that kind of thing
that side was originally where my knowledge
was
が
deeper, so conversely
I could give interview answers that drew out my true feelings more smoothly on this side
so surprisingly I didn't really struggle that much
with the preparation part
By the way, Izu, what kind of industries are you looking at in your job hunting now
I've been focused solely on TV stations all along. Since middle school, I've always been like TV stations only, so did you not feel scared about narrowing down your industry from the start
Honestly, at first I didn't really understand what job hunting itself was
so I just kept working hard thinking I could make it, but now
I'm already in the fall of my third year of university
so with everyone around me doing it, I'm gradually getting information
and I'm realizing this is a pretty tough world
you know
I thought, and honestly I'm feeling really anxious
but
I've just built up so much over time
and I didn't want to let someone else take it away, so with that feeling
I just kept pushing forward relentlessly for now
I'm moving forward
This might be a strange question, but
if I myself
don't think about what if I didn't get into the TV industry
今いま
right now
I'm not thinking about it
If there's something you truly want to do, focusing on that one thing and working hard at it is one important thing. For the sake of the future too
I think that's fine for now
Next, I want to dig deeper into what actions you took after changing your target industry in the fall to reach your job offer
First, after you changed industries, what specific actions did you take? In terms of preparation after narrowing down my industry,
well, of course one thing was mastering the job-hunting school, and case interview prep was another
I think that newly came in. Honestly, until the summer I hadn't even had a chance to actually practice case interviews
only after I thought it through at the job-hunting school and decided to apply to consulting did I start preparing for case interviews for the first time, so
it was already around October, November, when offers for winter recruiting were almost starting to come out,
in that sense I was finally able to get to case interviews
well, it was quite late, but
I was doing case interview prep
So narrowing down the industry gave you more time, which helped you make progress on consulting prep?
Yeah, I really narrowed down the companies I applied to, so including early selections, the total number of companies I applied to in the main selection
was probably less than 10
and
the timing for each company was also nicely spread out, so
every day
題だい
problems
or more, I did mock practice with AI, and I was doing case interview prep
In my case, I focused on job-hunting prep tailored to trading companies
both industry research and interview prep. Specifically, I did OB visits with 50 people
and through that I solidified my reasons for applying, which also helped
with interview prep, and for interview practice I probably did it at least once a day, so around 100 times tailored to trading companies
I think
and within this interview prep, I adjusted my self-PR story about my student efforts to fit trading companies
changing the angle a bit
until now I just talked about what I did, but I framed it like I was on the side creating systems and moving people
I tried to make my story about my student efforts fit the companies I wanted as much as possible. I also changed my story about my student efforts depending on the industry,
for the same story about the unicycle world championships,
I was writing about that in my self-PR,
but for consulting I focused and wrote about leadership, while for TV stations
in terms of creating performances, I featured that kind of producing ability when telling my story
and for advertising, I featured the aspect of involving others and enjoying it together
even with the same story, I tried to change how I framed it to create my self-PR
I also
thought it would be better to change how I frame my self-PR story to fit the industry
for popular companies with higher competition, stories can overlap with similar episodes
I think that can happen, but depending on how you frame it, you can show your individuality
and I thought I could also appeal how well-suited I am to the industry,
so I think it's okay to change it. How did you figure out what would resonate? For me, through OB visits and such
itself
I was using it as a sounding board
Because those interviewers were people in their 40s and 50s, and well, their values are a bit different from ours
For example,
like if I change this gakuchika this way will it get across, or if I say it this way will it get across, doing that kind of wall-hitting in OB visits was good I think
When I was applying mainly to developers, I changed the angle of my gakuchika
Since I was overseas, I couldn't really do OB visits
so YouTube and also homepages and such
I researched various companies in the same industry, and homepages often have employee interviews, so I read all of them
and among them, I looked at what kind of people are liked, what kind of people are there
I had always been doing it with soccer as my angle, but within that, more focused on human warmth
When I was applying to developers, I made a gakuchika focused more on human warmth, even within that soccer angle. Since you also want to work in TV, you know there are some unique questions, right
In interviews and such. Nakahira-san, how did you prepare for those unique interview questions
For TV stations, well, especially
What's your favorite TV program,
Well, they ask things like that, and after all, for each of them, I think it's better to mention their own company's
あの
Um,
works, so for each of those five companies
I had to prepare my favorite program
And moreover, they dig deep into it, so I had to be able to talk about it myself, so first of all
I re-watched the program I was going to talk about as my favorite
あと
Also,
Yeah, I watched surrounding works and such, so it took a lot of time
Speaking of which, for developers too, in interviews they ask about your favorite building
or favorite commercial facilities, that kind of question often comes up in the final round
So before the final interview, I walked around the city to see what kind of buildings there are
I was actually asked a question like what should be done about the area going forward
So
So not just looking, but thinking about what I thought about that building
and what I would do myself, so for developers it's walking around the city, and for TV stations it's watching those programs, I thought that's really important
You ended up with a lot of job offers, right. On top of that, in the interviews you had toward the end, when they asked something like do you have other offers
did you answer honestly, or did you hide it and say this is my first choice, how was that
I was hiding it
Really. Because the offers I had were from a mega-venture and
consulting
and honestly, the reason I really wanted to go there, experienced talent and being able to work globally, was a bit off
so when I talked about my reason for applying, if they asked why did you apply to this industry I couldn't respond well, and I thought even spending like three minutes on that conversation would be a waste
I wasn't saying it
Actually, on the contrary,
あの
um,
Like the response, I had offers in other industries
but on the contrary, when asked that question, I said I do have them properly, and then when asked why are you applying to TV stations now from consulting, I used that to conversely convey
my motivation for this industry and my level of interest
I was telling them
When I went to the final interview for a developer, they said please tell us if there are other companies in the same industry you're applying to
well, I told them all properly
If it's the same industry I think it's fine to say it, and conversely if you don't say it, they'll think, what, you're only applying to us? Isn't that strange? That's true for the same industry
I'm pretty much like Yuto-kun, I remember talking almost honestly without hiding
Probably, just because you have offers from other companies,
they'll reject us, I don't think
companies think that way
No matter what kind of company you get an offer from, if you have a solid reason for narrowing it down, you'll probably get into that company
On the flip side, if you can't clearly differentiate yourself from other companies, it becomes pretty tough
I think you need to solidify that now, through this summer internship, at this stage in the fall
This time, we asked 26 grads about their job hunting strategies after changing or narrowing down their target industries for this fall and winter. How was it for everyone? Well, it was good to hear
about the choices of various people. As for myself, I'm really glad I narrowed down my industry, so
if you have a strong feeling that you want to go into this industry, I think it's good to narrow it down and focus your resources there
I think it's good to narrow it down and allocate your resources there if you have a strong desire to join that industry
In the end I'm glad I narrowed it down, but it was because I looked broadly that I arrived there, so at this stage it might still be okay to look broadly
but personally, I think in the end it's better to narrow it down
Conversely, I think there are people like me who want to broaden or change their industries
To be honest, that's considered a bad move in job hunting, but
Well, job hunting, new grad job hunting only happens once in your life, and I hated the regret of not trying the most, so I think you should do job hunting in a way you won't regret
As one factor for narrowing down companies and differentiating yourself going forward, I really want everyone to try the employee mentor program
Like me and Surukusu Yuuto-kun
There are quite a few people who can't easily do OB/OG visits or
alumni visits
who are in an environment where they can't
so I think there are quite a few people in that situation
As one way to think about your future career path and what kind of work style you can have at that company
I think you should definitely try applying for lots of employee mentors
